Simple domain was shown back in season 1, Miwa (blue hair girl) is capable of using it. They are not planning to beat gojo with it, actually they are not planning to beat gojo AT ALL. they explained in season 1 that they plan to seal him away with the prison realm.
Just a reminder that in season 1 Geto tells Jogo that he plans to use the prison realm on Gojo, and Jogo tells him to give him the prison realm and he will just kill Gojo. That is what prompts their fight and then leads to Jogo realizing he can't actually kill Gojo and needs to go along with Geto's plan. So they already have what Geto believes they need. The Mechamaru fight was more about keeping information secret as well as keeping Mechamaru from being against them at Shibuya. Geto was actually just admiring Mechamaru for having a plan to actually deal with Mahito - who is not easy to deal with. The jump straight into Shibuya makes sense because none of the good guys actually know what is happening until it happens (as pointed out by Kusakabe).

He knows that he and his goons DON'T HAVE any chance of beating Gojo in a fight, so they plan to seal him away with the prison realm. They mentioned this in episode 6 of season 1

Even after being healed by the enemy back to normal, the past that was lost will not return, so the curse power remains intact. However, he can only use curse powers through objects. Anything that has been given a magic formula can be manipulated all over Japan. He learned it by watching Miwa's Simple Domain. However, it is a method of applying a surgical technique to an object and reproducing it. In other words, it is a simple Mechamaru-style domain. The technique is applied to a syringe-like object and is activated the moment it is touched. What's more, it releases magical power from within in order to be able to attack the soul as a countermeasure against Masato.
Miwa used New Shadow Style: Simple Domain quite a few times now. In the Kyoto-Tokyo exchange and in Movie 0. It is implied, Mechamaru learn how to do Simple Domain through observing Miwa. Normally it’s used defensively to protect its user from the Domain Expansion but Geto was surprised Mechamaru can use it offensively. That’s it. Great reaction!
The series makes it way more complicated than it actually is but simple domain is basically a technique that protects the user from the guaranteed hit of a domain expansion that's why Mahito's domain did nothing to him. Don't get confused and think that this is something that has to be inherited because it's not, it's something that everybody can learn just like veils and reversed cursed technique.
guys they already explained the plan in season 1, they gonna seal gojo using this thing called "prison realm". simple domain is only a temporary counter for domain expansion. it useless against a high skilled sorcerer like gojo who's domain is probably one of the most refined one.
