The Oppo Find X is a smartphone you probably shouldn't buy yet - but not for the reasons you think. Yes, it's a more fragile phone than the competition, with a motorized camera module that seems fated to fail someday. To quote the great Montgomery Scott, "The more they overtake the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain."
But to me, carrying a phone as beautiful and unique as the Oppo Find X is worth the durability tradeoff. After all, not every device is meant to hold up to the rigors of carelessness, and you've got to expect some compromises in a device made to stand out in 2018. However well-founded they may be, those durability concerns obscure what I think is the more pressing problem with the Oppo Find X: ColorOS. Oppo's custom Android interface insists upon itself so aggressively that it actively prevents the user from installing a custom launcher. To be clear, I didn't expect a cakewalk when trying to adapt an overseas smartphone for North American use - but this is the first Android phone in memory that actively prevents the user from enjoying one of the key benefits of Android: the ability to customize the interface to suit their needs. Oppo tells me a software update is due to fix some of the bugs complained of in the above video ... but until this launcher lockdown policy is lifted, I won't be dropping this phone in my pocket. Brilliant video. That blue is awesome looking. And I totally agree! Durability is not the *only* factor to consider when buying a phone. The Find X is seriously one of the coolest looking phones out right now. Even if it is fragile.

Not going to lie, it's an amazing looking phone regardless of the other issues mentioned.
MrMobile please review the Vivo Nex. The English version is available in India if you'd like to get one. I believe the hardware is waaaay more durable than the Find X and the software (although an iPhone clone) has significant advantages than pure vanilla Android. Case in point: the bottom-swiping notification bar/control-center - the only Android phone I know to have it like the iPhone. In my opinion it is superior as it allows quick one-handed usage. Please DO IT!

@@imranvp The problem is Apple sues any company that operates in the US that copies any part of their software. Ever wonder why no Android phone uses a slide to unlock bar? They use to before Apple sued Samsung for over $500 million. When I bought the Galaxy s3 when it was released, it had the slide to unlock. After the first update, it was gone.

Yes! I had a W580i, a close cousin of your C510. It's still one of the few phones that truly stole my heart. The Oppo is definitely reminiscent.

Oh boy, most of these ColorOS issues were already present and well documented back in 2015/16 when I worked for them... Doesn't leave me with too much confidence that they will actually fix them now

Vivo Nex is a better bezelless alternative IMO. Headphone jack, underscreen fingerprint scanner, all that jazz.

Partially agreed, but the design of vivo pop up camera is not on my taste,
For durability, i seldom put my phone in my pants , i prefer to put my phone in my jacket pocket so bend issues is not a big deal for me, because if we want to be real, there's tons other wat that can possibly destroy your phone , for water resistant I'm type that always put my phone in safe spot whenever i eat or do jobs that makes me dirty, and i also not that addicted to phone to the point i will take it with me to bath or in the middle if heavy rain
The only disappointment from find x for me from what i know is the lack of jack port, because it's quite a hurdle in my hometown to bring adaptor whenever i go because sometimes i sleep over at my friend's place

The software issues you outlined are EXACTLY the same issues I had on my Vivo X20 Plus UD. Could never get a separate launcher going and so many odd permissions.

Great video! All of yours are fantastic. Had a similar experience with a play around A73 I bought about 6 months ago - not changing the launcher and their restricted android approach is frustrating and difficult to use.

MrMobile [Michael Fisher] I really enjoy all of your videos and being a network technician I loved that AT&T video you did recently.
When I was in college, learning how to fix cameras, video cameras and cell phones. It not the sand that you can see that really destroys them, it's the sand that you don't see that really gets inside and you don't even know that it is there until you send it or bring it in to get fixed. The extra warranty that you have been paying for to fix or replace it, at best, it will be a used same model replacement device and the original, will be tagged then put in the garbage.

I agree about the software. Worst thing about the phone. I can't uninstall everything and still get a bunch of notifications in Chinese. :/ I was able to install Google services pretty easily, though.
Same here! Google Play store install went fine (thanks David Imel!) but even after switching to English so many notifications still landing in Chinese.
yep, and as you said needing to click them to dismiss is annoying! I thought there was something wrong the first few days since I couldn't swipe to dismiss. hopefully the western version fixes this stuff
This is one phone that _needs_ to be saved by a Custom ROM, but obviously that's a deal killer for non-tinker-techies. UI design is just something that Chinese/Japanese/etc companies seem to struggle with for some reason, not sure why. Korean companies seem to be getting much better though.
Chinese rom like Miui has 2 variant of rom
1.for chinese rom for chinese market no google apps with more chinese apps
2.global rom with playstore less bloatware probaly google apps has more apps than the bloatware.
that's what happend when buying chinese phone but the phone is not ready yet for your country.
Parker's Brick Box I don't think so.color os is packed with themes and customization.even the icon dont look the same.they just don't have app drawer.that for me it's easy and u Don't hve u worry about app shortcut appear everytime installing new apps

Always appreciate your video reviews!! The deal-breaker for me here is the software. I really want a bezel-less cell but the software is a complete deal-breaker as well as a bummer. I like a lot of other things about this cell. I'll stick with my Pixel 2 until I can find a bezel-less cell that is up to par with software as well.

In Singapore and Indonesia, most people really don't care about the software experience (skins, etc)of their smartphones and often just leave the default settings when they used it. In my friend group, probably only 1 person that actually care about software. If their phone is slow, most of them are either upgrade their phone or just deal with it. I know someone still on galaxy S4. All they care is whether it can run their app or not. I would like to hear from you regarding this.
That's true tough, mostly asean user especially indonesia only care about camera and how fast it can run the app especially social media app

For me i love gestures features in oppo that so various and cool but i still think when buy the expensive smartphone like flagship series, samsung is still the safest choice, samsung maybe not the best , but it's have complete features and we still can said that everything inside it worth the money although it's maybe not really amazed us

For reference it's quite possible to install a custom launcher. Just install the desired replacement, then use ADB to manually remove the default Oppo UI. Presto. I'm using Nova atm for reference.

Good points, sometimes the software is the only thing that matters, the Blackberry line up is always using kind of outdated hardware but implemented in a way where the software imhas value for the users.

I totally agree with you PocketNow man. I constantly worry about my camera getting scratched as well. The mechanics of this phone should easily last two years without fault. Let's be honest, if you're buying a Find X, it will probably only last for six months to a year before you move on. It's a really good buy if you're throwing down for a new phone every year or less.
