  • After experimenting with his new style in his last couple of films, Malick has made a film that is unique in both thematic and formal aspects, but underneath all of this, what is really A Hidden Life about?

    Thanks for the presentation. I had not heard of this film before, despite being highly familiar with all Mr Malick's films to 2005 / up to New World - as I more lately live with less cinema, TV and DVD access, along with less electricity.
    As well as the distinction between spiritual and religious, within the division aesthetic - ethical - religious/spiritual, another thinking literary critic - Lionel Trilling - presents as two psychological traits in his book of the same title.
    Using a wide angle lens in a two shot with the camera placed to obtain a distorted low angle perspective accentuates the conflict or opposition between the two persons.
    This video has had 1329 views as at 22 May 2022, which happily means no ads have been prefixed to it by Y so far. I have found that once my most popular video exceeded about 20 000 views, Y started putting an ad in front of it and the number of new views declined noticeably. The punishment for success.

    • @filmrainn
      @filmrainn  2 года назад

      Thanks! i will definitely check out the other traits that Lionel Trilling have mentioned i his book!
      And let's hope not all the successes come with punishments! :)

      @@filmrainn Another 10 minute video about Hidden Life from another contributor has two advertisements back to back in the middle of a sentence in the middle of the video, Y algorithms can be uncouth, but success needs to be exploited by Y for financial gain, regardless of the subject matter.
      .
      Lionel Trilling's book is heavy going, unless you are a literary critic or professor of English literature. Heavy going means you might have to read it several times (you can save time by reading the precis on Wikipedia), and it also helps to have read numerous novels and plays from the past 400 years, to follow and understand Trilling's explanation / argument.
      .
      Authenticity gradually emerged in literature, where there was no such literary concept originally. People with an authentic psychology can be good or bad. They tend to be sincere, I am not sure if Rosa Luxemburg would qualify as authentic, maybe she would. Socrates, yes, Yukio Mishima yes (in my opinion).

      @@filmrainn It's an amazing book it really sheds light on his thought and why he did what he did. It's playing a major roll in his full canonization as a saint. His letters are also very powerful and full of thoughts far beyond the average man seeking the face of God.

    • @filmrainn
      @filmrainn  Год назад +1

      very interesting! thanks for sharing. I'm sure there are a lot more aspects to be discovered about Franz's existence and inner thoughts and feelings cause in the end this film is Malick's take on Franz and his journey. I'm definitely gonna read his letters, cause I have a thing for the whole aesthetic and the experience of the whole expressing oneself in a letter, cause simply when being written the letters are meant to be read only by the person who is meant to receive them so it can be very privet and very personal, like when I read ''François Truffaut Letters '' my whole perception and understanding of the french new wave and how everything was actually happening transformed, so I'm looking forward to reading Franz's letters

      Franz was deeply Catholic and the mystical union he experienced was conveyed well in the movie without being flat or preachy

    Too long, too much of scenes with no dialogue, abruptly cut scenes/dialogues which I couldn't get whatever artistic effort are in them. For average viewers like me, it should be less than a 75min run. I regret watching it for 3 hours😰

      I get what you mean, I guess it just isn't your kind of movie, maybe you would appreciate Malick's earlier films like ''Days Of Heaven'' more, but anyways thanks for sharing your thoughts 🙏
