  • Search for the world's best woodless pencils continues with a review of the Cretacolor Monolity Woodless pencils set.
    Woodless pencils are unique in that they are solid graphite sticks (with a point) like a pencil without the usual wood casing you find on regular pencils.

    I just tested a pentalic woodless pencil (hb) and yes I see your point about smoothness , but no smudge. I just bought these to take on the road with me and my sketchbook, nice video, thanks

    So funny, I see myself playing with the tin case before opening the pencil pack. Looks addicting, especially if I'm in a boring class or meeting.

    I own this set and found myself going back to cheaper wood pencils. There is something about how they sharpen and flake/chip that makes it hard to get a smooth gradation. If you get this set you'll wanna get some sand paper or get good at sharpening with a razor.

    interestingly, yesterday I accidently dropped my set (from father christmas) onto concrete! ......... Amazingly, all six survived the impact. However, the HB broke in half when I accidently stepped on it. I was so so mad. Great pencils for sure.

      It's almost like a comedy skit. You drop fragile pencils onto concrete and they don't break, only to end up stepping on them and sending them to pencil heaven. 😛

    Good video… I prefer the fabercastell version… it’s quite the same but the Fabre Castell came with a plastic cover that it’s easy to remove…

    Upon using the woodless pencil ,
    My hypothesis is that they add more clay to the graphite to increase the strength of the pencil and prevent it form breaking in the absence of wood,
    Also I belive they are meant to cover the large areas , such as in the background . Hence quality of the the shade , and hardness are not required to be of the highest standard and hence the extra clay is added into the graphite formula.

    • @RixCanDoit
      @RixCanDoit  2 года назад

      Hmmm. Dunno. I find good woodless produce darker tones which suggest more graphite. The plastic casing is what appears to provide strength from breaking.

    Are you drawing on plastic? The fluorescent light makes the paper look like there's a sheet of plastic over the paper, just wondering.

    • @RixCanDoit
      @RixCanDoit  7 лет назад +1

      Nope. Drawing on drawing paper.

    What are buying woodless pencils for if what you'd ever used is the tip and the rest will be wasted from sharpening

    • @RixCanDoit
      @RixCanDoit  Год назад

      And that's an excellent question and point. Woodless pencils allow for a 'wider' application that is good for shading applications. You are not confined to a 'tip'. :-)

    That HB from Uni is more like a 2B. HB should be a bit rough. That's why I never use Uni pencils. Too creamy.

    • @RixCanDoit
      @RixCanDoit  5 лет назад +3

      Why use a pencil that is rough at all? With all the pencils in my quiver, I find there is no need to use rough pencils unless that's what you're into.

    The problem with woodless pencils is that many of them have a very thin plastic coating on them. When you sharpen the pencil you turn that plastic into dust. This is terrible for the environment and can get into your lungs. Perhaps into your bloodstream. Check the pencil's specs, or ask the company if necessary, but don't use ones with a plastic coating.
