Paco definitely a master, a whole different world, but I still love Jan Akkerman's feel. Still one of the masters of electric guitar for me, even though Paco's technique is monstrous against any guitarist.
Paco was such a gifted player, a real genius. Must have been difficult for Jan to jump in but I think he did very well. Looking at them play and interact with each other, it does look like they enjoyed this. There is another video of Paco and Jan together and I think there is where this all started. Great piece of guitar history...

If Paco's gone, then what is the standard? It used to be, sitting in with him was a badge of honor that a very few guitarists could show that they had arrived with.

Yo tengo toda su discografía, así como una extensísima discografía de guitarra flamenca, y debo decir que Akkerman es un verdadero atleta de las cuerdas, maestro, a nivel mundial, en el laud, la acústica y la eléctrica. A ver si te documentas un poco, Séneca.

Robbie McIntosh, Tommy Emmanuel, Narciso Yepes, Don Andrés Segovia, Brian Setzer, Michael Jordan, Johnny Winter, Eric Johnson, Slash, Dominic Miller(argentino), Norberto "PAPPO" Napolitano, Atahualpa Yupanqui, Robert Johnson y etc..etc..me quedo corto. Mi querido SantsFlamenquinitelli, tiene Ud. para rato para cultivarse ahora y abrir su cabezota. Y aprenda a escuchar. Le aventé una buena lista variada en estilos, épocas y paises de origen y no me alcanza.
lo conoces tan bien que has hecho copiar y pegar. Akkerman es un visionario y convirtió a Focus en una de las bandas más importantes de toda la escena prog. Otra cosa es que se pueda comparar a cualquier guitarrista con Paco de Lucía
Los puretas de la peña flamenca tienen menos cultura, sobre otros estilos, que un mico, en su mayoría, y siempre se permiten el lujo de calificar todo lo que les rodea. Menos mal que los grandes artistas como Paco, Camarón y Benavent no se lo tienen tan subido, y han sabido siempre mezclarse con otros estilos.

Paco de Lucia was by far the best guitar player ever, but Jan Akkerman is certainly one of the best right behind that, certainly on par with the likes of Al Dimeola, John McLaughlin, John Scofield, etc, and I think Jan Akkerman was even a bit more original and versatile than those...
John McLaughlin has far more refined technique than Jan Akkerman. Jan is critical of him, though, saying, "He looks like a dentist and plays like one, too." But then Jan is very critical of so many others, calling Zappa's work "Birdie music for intellectuals," for example. I can say I like all of the musicians mentioned, and can be critical of certain aspects of each. They're still superb.

Yo toco flamenco profesionalmente y me encantan Pat Metheny, Deep Purple, Beatles, Joe Pass, Djavan, Yamandu Costa, The Police, Juanjo domínguez, Luis Salinas, George Benson y un ercétera que no acaba de músicos de muchos estilos y países. Desgraciadamente en el flamenco hay mucha gente que cree que es la mejor música del mundo y que no es necesario escuchar nada más. la ignorancia es atrevida pero por suerte somos cada día más los que apreciamos la música de una forma global y sin prejuicios o estúpidos complejos de superioridad.
That guy could be very good jazz player, but he looks completely lost, playing with De Lucia, the only one that ive seen to keep up with Lucia was who teached him how to improvise, Al di Miola.
I wonder how people are comparing both guitarrists round here. De Lucía is THE master, nevertheless the interesting thing here is the way that Jan's blues -jazzy feel merges into the music.
