      Thanks Mark. Ya it would be nice of the bottom was cleaned up but this is probably why the area is not marked as an anchorage. I bet the locals who have cottages there prefer to not have 10 boats anchored looking at the beautiful skyline every night if it was a clean bottom for anchoring and it was marked as an anchorage. We anchored there on our first pass by Toronto a number of times and never had a problem. I would probably try it again there but this time closer to shore in 8-10 feet of water so I can easily get my anchor unstuck if it happens again. We were probably just unlucky.

    i think the prefect thing that you need to add to your boat would be one of those mini dive tanks were you get 10-15mins of air. just for this case that way once you get to the achor you have more than 20 seconds to work on it.

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  3 года назад +2

      Ya. I looked into that idea after this. Only issue is you need a high pressure pump to fill them. It is not a simple pump. You need a pump to get 3500 psi pressure. If I could buy a small tank that I could fill with our SUP pump then I would already have bought it as soon as this happened. But now you have to buy a tank with respirator and a high pressure pump. I think better flippers and a scuba weight belt to help me easily get to the bottom would have made all the difference. On our next boat (a 45-50' Cat, we will fork over the big bucks to get a full scuba compressor and multiple tanks onboard so we can dive where ever we are. Good investment when it is your full time home.

    Great video! I had an idea, let me know your thoughts: could you have used a spare halyard line and attached it onto the mooring ball chain, but below your anchor . Then use a winch onboard to tighten the halyard line and release tension on your main anchor chain thereby allowing you enough slack to get the loop of mooring ball chain off of your anchor?

    • @isaiah30v8
      @isaiah30v8 3 года назад +2

      Yep, that should have made the part of the mooring chain wrapped around the anchor completely loose and easier to slip off. Looks like the anchor came relatively close to the surface with the mooring ball chain wrapped around it so just dropping the anchor a little would have given the slack and also not have to dive so far down to do the job.

    • @mikemendes7598
      @mikemendes7598 3 года назад +1

      I had the same thought. I've seen this work on other yachts with the same problem. It also seems like having a weight belt and at least a "pony bottle" for some air is necessary kit for this kind of thing. (fouled anchors too)

    So the last snag when you hooked the mooring chain loop, seen it many a time, what you do is use a dock line and hook or tie it on that mooring chain, wrap it to you cleat then you can lower your anchor as much as you need, to move it around or through that mooring chain, your free !

    • @MichaelBuck
      @MichaelBuck 3 года назад

      Exactly what I was thinking!!! No need to dive 20 times or use that spare anchor. A simple and easy solution was to tie a line to the mooring ball chain, about 3 feet below where it's wrapped around your anchor. Tie the other end of the line to the boat, then you are held in. Let out your anchor chain about 3 feet, then remove the mooring chain from around your anchor, then pull up your anchor. Then detach your line from the mooring ball chain by moving the boat forward slightly. Note: The attachment to the mooring chain should be an easy release bend.

    • @bjansen3936
      @bjansen3936 3 года назад +1

      @@MichaelBuck correct, but in saying “tie” to that mooring chain I really mean it’s a loop, from boat through mooring chain back to boat, then after you clear the anchor you can you can release one end of line, thus it just falls away you kept the line you used

    Had something like this happen when I was in thousand islands, with a fellow boater from my club. We had someone dive down, tie a line to the old power line that was a good 6" round, which the anchor had hooked onto. the line went back to a winch and cranked as much as we could, once we had that done we had enough pressure off the boat anchor to undo that mess, cut the line and away he went.

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  3 года назад +1

      Ya. We snagged an underwater cable when we were on the Ottawa River. We luckily were able to let the chain go loose and motor around and pull from a 180-degree angle and we got it un attached. Not sure what we would have done if it didn't work. The Ottawa River is very murky from all the rotting logs so I don't think we could snorkel down and find anything in that river. Just goes to show that you probably don't want to anchor in deep water when you are unsure of the bottom. Or be prepared to lose your anchor. Paying a professional diver to get your anchor back would cost as much or more than as a new anchor. I really needed a scuba weight belt, in this case, to help me get down the 15' with more ease. I spent so much effort getting quickly down and I felt I needed to let out air as I went down to make me less buoyant and also to stop the pressure on my ears. By the time I was down I was already almost out of oxygen. It really gave me little time to work down there and diving 20 times back to back made me winded. As you can see in the video.

    ..... wowzers .... now that was a doozy of a time ... of course you know this now that you have edited, look at footage taken in clear water to see which way the chain is wrapped ... question! why not disconnect chain from boat and pull it up anchor first, no cutting of chain required??? .... 15" that is a long way to go down and then expect to do physical activity unless you are that guy in, I think it was southern California, it was an article I read, but he and his wife have their workout equipment at the bottom of their pool and guess where they do their workouts, yes the pool was full of water .. laughing .. the things some people do, cannot remember the reasoning behind it ... brilliant idea to set the other anchor ..... glad all worked out for you ... thx for the share Janice and Craig .... never stop dreaming, just dream bigger .. have fun be safe, save our oceans ....

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  3 года назад

      The first time it was stuck our chain was pinched in between 2 pieces of steel so the chain would not just pull through. I don't thing tying a rope to the back of the anchor and letting out the 200+ feet of chain would have worked. I probably would have lost everything. Now once I saw the footage of the second snag, it may have worked in that case. I just hate to drop 200' chain to the bottom in hopes that I can get it all back up with a rope. Big risk. I'd rather cut the chain and tie a rope to the anchor near the surface and lose 10' of chain. A scuba weight belt would have been really helpful, in this case, to allow me to get down the 15' with way less effort. So much energy and oxygen was spent just getting down that once down there I had just a short amount of time to try and do anything and yes trying to lift a heavy anchor and chain while kneeling in the mud in murky water is hard. It is not like standing on solid ground. I hope I don't have to do that again unless I am on my next boat and we have a scuba compressor installed and can spend tons of time just checking out the situation with a tank on.

      @@Bowmans-Woods For the second scenario if you were able to get the anchor on deck, by taking the tension off (2nd anchor, or line to mooring chain) and then by letting out enough chain to run through the mooring chain, you may have been able to detach the swivel, pull the anchor chain through the mooring chain and then reattach the swivel. Would have at least saved you some diving!

Anyway, I would like to make a suggestion (if it's not a problem): I'm convinced that you can add a really funny video on your channel to show some of the funniest things happened during scuba diving, it can be something like a "oops and bloopers" compilation. For example, you could make a compilation of all of the moments where you or your friends get "caught" on video while peeing in the water (my uncle relieved himself in a scuba diving session and that was hilarious, he always says there are 2 types of divers and swimmers: those who pee in the water and those who lie), what do you think? A couple of points and options :-
    Toronto is regarded as the safest city in North America
    There's LOTS of stuff to see and do in Toronto
    Sailing is very popular in Toronto
    so
    you c o u l d live aboard for a long time while exploring Toronto, not get mugged cause it's safe and then - after a while - sell your yacht to some-one else (on-line) thus removing the problem
    heck you could even say you have a cheap mooring.
    More importantly who is going to win Superbowl ???

    • @Bowmans-Woods
      @Bowmans-Woods  3 года назад +1

      We love Toronto. When we retire if we ever decide to bring out Cat north to Canada in the summer, we would certainly think about spending a summer at a dock in Toronto. More expensive than other smaller cities but well worth it for all the things to do.
      I think KC proved it against the Bills that they have too many great receivers to cover all at once so I see KC winning the Superbowl. They are favored by 3 but I see them beating that spread.

    Never forget you have winches on the boat that will increase your work to achieve whatever force you require as per Laws of pulleys.

    • @Bowmans-Woods

      That would require diving down numerous times to tie a rope on the anchor and many dives down to get the shackle undone. If I could have gotten the anchor to the surface than your idea would have been a good option but it never got close to the surface.

    Hello. I was wondering, will you be doing an update video anytime soon? I’ve noticed a decline in video production and was curious about the future of the channel. I was also curious what your thoughts are regarding the flood of sailing channels that have emerged in the last two years. There must, on average, be 100 channels born every week. Has this altered the future of your channel? I know this is a heavy question but I’m really curious.

    • @Bowmans-Woods

      Just did this years Lake Ontario 5 week trip. New content coming. There are a lot of channels doing the same thing, sailing around the Caribbean. When we retire we will probably document our progress getting use to living full time on a CAT. If it gets good views we will be motivated to keep going. If it doesn’t then I can just cut back on the number of episodes I produce. Luckily, unlike most other channels with young good looking people, we do not need to live off the channel’s ad revenue. It is a hobby. If it is fun we will keep doing it. If it becomes a chore, we can just stop.
