I got the M1 when it first came out in December 2020. I got 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of SSD for extra headroom for video editing, running many apps simultaneously, and reducing SSD swap. After watching a ton of M3 MBA reviews, like you, I keep going back to my trustee M1 and just don’t ever feel like anything is slow. Everything is still lightning fast. If I would like anything to be faster, it’s video render and export times, but, I can always do other tasks while video tasks run in the background so I don’t really feel an impact. Coming from my 2017 MacBook Pro with Core i7, the M1 Air has been an absolute beast. I knew when I bought it that this would be a long term powerhouse and now 3.5 years later, I see how right I was. I might consider M4 when it comes out, but I think I’ll be rockin’ the M1 for at least another year, and likely longer. Great review!

do you think buying the exact same model is worth now for very light college tasks, despite its age?

imo, if you already have an M1 device then there is barely any reason to upgrade atm
if you want to get a laptop and money is an important factor, then M1 is a great choice and one that is atm still kicking strong
if you are upgrading from a 5+ year old laptop and want to use your new laptop for a long time from now, go for the M3
with rumors that next system update will rely on AI a lot, then the M3 with it's updated neural cores can recieve updates and stay relevant for longer

I must say that both M1 and M3 (and all Intel/AMD x86/x64) laptops get warm to hot while on group video calls like Zoom, Teams or Google meet

The only reason i got the M2 macbook air was because of magsafe if the M1 had that i would have bought it instead because i still like the wedge design.

I agree that M1 is amazing, M3 is CPU is 30% faster, but biggest M3 advantage is that is much more efficient (most improvements are done to efficiency cores, those are 50% faster, along GPU which is 65% faster),
Just a tip at 1:26, you cannot test SSD speed by copying files from memory card (which is bottleneck), SSD speed is important in both random and sequential access, when swap memory is used, apps loading to ram, etc...

I use a 16" M1 Pro for work and love the small bezels and Promotion display. I need to get a personal laptop and want the smallest one possible. I have been going back and forth so much on the M1 and M3. I think it makes sense to either go cheap and get the base M1 and see how it works for me and use the money I saved for a new model in the future or to just go "all out" now and get a M3 16GB/512. At twice the cost though, the M3 one is a hard pill to swallow, especially when I will still be spending most of my time on my big work laptop and probably actually very little time on the MacBook Air I end up purchasing. Decisions, decisions. Thanks for the review!

Brother, please reply to this (I am a starting college student):- In India during the Amazon Great Indian Festival Sale/Flipkart BBD sale, base M1 MacBook Air will be priced around 50k (500 USD); base M2 Air at around 65k (650 USD) and the base M3 at around 85k (850 USD) and the 16 GB variant of the M3 at around 105k (1050 USD). My logic is :- If I buy M1 Air base variant today; it could last me for next 3-4 years but then its resale price will be 0. We can skip the base M2 and there is no point in upgrading the storage as I could just pick the M3 for that price. Now, for the M3, for the 350 dollars, difference I will get a better laptop for next 3-4 years and after that I would get a resale value of around 400-500 dollars which means I could kind of own a M3 Air for less than an M1 Air in a 4 year time frame. Then, if I add the 16 GB upgrade (extra 200 USD), in the 4 years time, when 8 GB ram would really not be enough, I could get additional 150-200 USD resale value (around 70k or 700 USD) meaning it would cost be around the same as the 8 GB M3 MacBook Air or maybe less as 16 GB ram models will be in demand then. So, what call should I take? Which would be a wiser value for money deal??? Please bro, please reply.

I would personally chose the M3 16GB variant as it would be more future proof.

And my logic is correct as well, right? I am a student by the way and don't have a heavy work load but as per my logic the 16 gb ram MacBook Air M3 is more budget friendly!

So I already had the M1, but decided to get an M3 just because of the better camera. I like to do video journals, and was tired of using the connectivity feature with my iPhone. It weakened the hinge on my M1. I still like having my M1 around, but have been using my M3 more.
