The days I spent in cloudcroft will forever be some of my most cherished memories. Miss that little place.

Dude I've watched hours of videos on moving to NM, and this is by far the most helpful one! Either CC or Ruidoso would be a dream come true for me but understanding the pros/cons of each has been amazing.

Thank you! I'm so grateful for your positive feedback, especially because these videos take a surprisingly large amount of time to create.

I'd be happy in either place. New Mexico is my favorite place even though I live about 10 miles from the Atlantic Ocean and only get there about twice a year. But I can't move: home, grandchildren, friends, roots. Old trees are much harder to transplant than young ones, and I'm an old tree.

Well I hope you get to keep visiting!

I can relate. While I love NM, as my retirement thoughts have evolved, I've come to realize I might only be able to visit there for long stretches, rather than live there year-round.

@@multicollinearityfi We just got back from Las Cruces/Mesilla. Climbed in the Organ mountains, which are very steep and harder than most of our climbs. Loved the area. I wish we had waited until the pecan trees were in leaf. That area around Mesilla is beautiful and contrasts very well with the desert. Las Cruces reminds me of Tucson, AZ about 50 years ago when the military sent me there. I only hope that Las Cruces stays much the same and doesn't ever look like the Tucson of today. We also went to Cloudcroft and Ruidoso. There was still snow in Cloudcroft. Both are a little too small for me to consider retirement. Silver City still has a slight edge for me. Taos would be my favorite but it's a bit expensive. Thanks for all your videos.

I try not to think, the pain is intense. But thank you for the well-paced, well-thought-out video. You raise a number of comparisons that are worth the terrible pain of thinking.

Ruidoso means noisy water not just noisy like you explained. Ruidoso has a higher crime rate due to the Police department seeing tourists as a good source of income from people who can`t vote. There was a news paper that ran the headline "COME ON PROBATION LEAVE ON PROBATION" .The news paper worked hard to solve this problem with some progress .

Ruidoso (by itself) DOES mean noisy. Noisy water translates to "agua ruidoso" or "rio ruidoso" (noisy river).

Ruidoso has a Hospital, unlike Cloudcroft

Ah yes, another sign that Ruidoso is the bigger, better-equipped town.

Thanks for mentioning this - I was going to mention the hospital as well. Although it doesn't garner great reviews - if you need an ER, it's good to know it's minutes away rather than over an hour.

Doctors and hospitals in NM, hmmm.
Hospital in Ruidoso is adequate if you have broken bones, etc.
Anything more you are going to ABQ or El Paso for life threats.
NM is a wilderness state meaning you are X minutes away from speedy life saving care.
Chronic pts. needing appointments will be traveling to Las Cruces. Hour and a half drive from Cloudcroft and Ruidoso. Ruidoso folks go to Roswell though. Mostly.

    About retirement in NM:
Better research the NM state laws regarding taxes to your income, SS.
Also, the resources of hospitals, doctors available. Fire response too, you are in the forests that some say are unhealthy.

Just an fyi but NM doesn't tax SS income unless income is over 100 or 150K

Yes& true. I believe most of Ruidoso commerce is invested by Texans, who are the consumers also.

Wildfires and floods make these NOT suitable for retirees.
