My 83 year old dad just finished building himself brand new raised beds. He gardens every year and cans what he grows. Works in his wood shop (a garage that he built within the last few years) often. Does most home repairs and all remodeling in my parent’s home. OH YEAH, and he cooks in cast iron every day!
Mike, I am on your side. I will be keeping and continuing to use all my castiron. My grandparents used it every day, and they both lived to almost 90. I had some blood work done a few months ago, and no elevated iron levels for me. Great video.

will continue with my castirons, sir as you've said it, these pans have been used for eons and continue to be use these present days... BUT probably, the good doctor might have a lead on those who are not using cast iron, maybe these people's ages are centuries old
Mike I really appreciate your humility and common sense on this. I've worked in the medical field (pharmacy) since 1990, and I feel like I've got a fairly good handle on how chemicals act in the body. I also realize that despite medical professionals being highly educated, they are human beings and their motivations and wisdom vary quite a bit from individual to individual. Like a lot of mass media health experts, Doctor Gundry often speaks with hyperbolic statements to get views, sell books, etc, which in turn affect his bottom. To say that "iron ages you" is absolute balderdash (a word I don't get to use nearly enough). Excess ferrous ions form free hydroxyl radicals that can damage lipids, proteins and nucleic acids, which in turn damage the heart, liver and endocrine system, but (and like my 1st grade teacher, this is a mighty big but) excess ferrous ions are not a problem because most people don't absorb too much iron. Dr. Gundry uses scare tactics to make this sound like it applies to everybody, but it really only applies to folks with hemochromatosis. Now hemochromatosis isn't quite as rare as most folks think, it affects about 1 in 300 people (with a higher incedence amongst folks from Ireland, Scotland and Wales). Anecdotally, I know of 3 other people in my circle of acquaintances that have shared that they have it, and its probably better to get tested for it with a serum iron and ferritin level, and get treatment for it than to throw away your cast iron. I know that you and I have talked about this before, and I think that your video on hemochromatosis is totally reasonable and well thought out, and your general humility is admirable. I probably won't be throwing away my cast iron, or even sending it your way, but I would like to take you and Mrs. Cast Iron out to lunch the next time I'm in Arkansas.
According to "statistics" , 1 in 3 Americans are IRON DEFICIENT !! That is telling me that cooking in CAST IRON can be beneficial for you . My Dad lived to 94. Went right through the Second World War, survived Nazi dive-bombers in the Royal Navy and lived life to the full afterwards. If he wanted bacon and eggs that's what he ate. He ate in moderation home cooked food. The fat he ate was largely natural and he was thin as a rake. Admittedly he ate the odd processed food but not extensively and much of it was in cast iron pans. In my opinion comparing a cast Iron pan to other non stick pans is rather like comparing unprocessed to processed food.
Wow! That’s cool, Michael! God bless your daddy, and we thank him for his service! My dad, too, was in WWII. I sure appreciate you taking the time to share this with us my friend! Merry Christmas!
This is the same doctor that says even "all natural" peanut butter and all eggs are bad for you. When he attacked eggs, I kinda started getting on the fence with this guy. But when he went after my "all natural" peanut butter, I knew right then I was dealing with a "snake oil" doctor trying to sell a program. I'm not surprised one bit that he's going after cast Iron. Dr. Gundry has learned to be a very good salesmen selling his products instead of working as an actual doctor operating on people's hearts. I'm sure he's making more money selling his products than he ever did operating on hearts.
I was always taught that if your cast iron is well seasoned it won't deposit any of its iron into the food anymore. This is a piece of cast iron not a tire on a car that wears out with use. If cast iron did that then hundred year old pieces would simply dissolve and vanish right?

Sorry Mike, "most people" are not iron deficient. Males are almost never iron deficient. Post menopausal women are also not frequently iron deficient. Pre menopausal women may be iron deficient, for obvious reasons. For older men especially, excess iron can lead to strokes and heart attacks. But so can too much bacon grease. I use my cast iron judiciously because that's what works FOR ME.
Too much bacon grease does not lead to strokes or heart attacks, processed oils cause them. Check out the carnivore diet that heals the body. Gee , I wonder why Geritol was a major sponsorship of the Lawrence Welk show ? It was a remedy for iron poor blood . And many more people cooked with cast iron then than now . 😮
Mike I agree with the doctor. Griswold and Martin are the worst but any early 1900s cast iron isn't good. We are concerned for your well being so we at the risk of our own health will handle it in the appropriate manner. You won't even have to pay us, consider it a public service. If the amount of iron I get from skillets could be shoved up a gnat's butt it would look like a BB in a box car. I dare say the food inside the skillet is far more deadly with chemicals than the skillet. Some people need their 15 minutes of fame and this is how he gets his.
I immediately skip through every one of his commercial videos, as I don't have faith in the type of blanket statements he makes.
