Cool idea. Instead of detecting objects/movements nearby, which has obvious limitations (like in the video when the servo closed on the straw), perhaps have a hands free, near-field sensor that you can swipe to open or close it. You don't really need it opening and closing every few minutes, and the person wearing the mask is best suited to decide whether to open it or not. What if there was someone coughing nearby, but they hadn't moved for a while. Looking forward to v2...
Ok. First way cool. Secondly, I love when you pass by your lady (on the couch) and she doesn't even bother to look. She's like "I'm not even going bother to look as he is always up to something insane." LOL
Maybe use ultrasonic sensors. Won't trigger with just standard motion (relative or otherwise), but if any person (or object) gets within a predefined range, it triggers,
i have a question because i want to try to build this and i'm new at this sort of thing. do ultrasonic sensors only sense humans? and how troublesome is the false positive problem
Definitely enjoyed this! It's amazing engineering and I thought about what if the door closed on the straw and not even several seconds later it happened 😂. Keep up the good fight!
I like your design Idea. and I think it's really smart of you to think of those that need a drink too. I love the bloops during construction. it gave me a good laugh and if you watched your video after. you'd have laughed too. the part where the mask door entrapped the straw was funny. Shame it didn't get finished and lined with the Filtration materials. I think you could have made a mint off your design. it needs some tweaking but I do think you have something there. Keep working at it. don't give up. All great Minds Never give up!
interesting concept and gread implementation, but i think activ air flow control with some micro fans and integrated retractable straw are more practical. if u use some good filters id might be an actuall useable mask
Maybe instead of the sensors you can just make a dummy mask where blue button closes and the blue lights light up red button openes and the red lights light up. Would be just as easy to use and alot cheaper?
great project btw why don't you use or try using ultrasonic sensor..they are big in size but u can customize them and rip the sensor from the board and can make it more compatible maybe that will work
I thought about the same thing, you can use one to detect if somebody is closer than 2m form you however you can only measure in a point, maybe smth like sonar?
Are you willing to add the STL FiIes so others can print this? Perhaps maybe even sell them? This would be a great item if you have a Large, XLarge and XX-Large sizes available.
I want to learn how to create things like this, but it seems pretty complicated and intimidating - where is the best place to start my education? Can you recommend any videos or courses?
I started with an arduino kit, there should be all the parts you need for simple projects, then it's the matter of picking up skills piece by piece. Let me know if you have future questions.
Great video and idea! I was confused because of the title of the video but as soon the video started, it made sense to me :) Maybe change title a little bit? Something like: Interactive/Intelligent Face Mask! Allows normal breathing when no one is near / closes when people are close by.
Not a stupid idea, as you say is valid, although a little modification would be like a sensor that could detect something within like a piece of food or a straw, but hey trial and error right? Great job :D
I’m at 5:46. Even long I have long hair, I’m wondering if having sensors on the neck could be better. That or like a snood of sorts. Clothes could get in the way though too. Not to have feature creep but maybe shoulder mounting frame or thing you place over that has the sensors. Hmm. 22:39pm 1/June/21
I have worked with Ultrasonic sensors in the past. I think to get a better result, you could add in some lines of code for distance. If anything was outside of this distance it would stay open. When anything got inside the distance reference it would trigger the servo to close and change the color of the LEDs.
This mask could also be good for someone exercising who wants to be able to breath with no restrictions but does not want to have to take off and put on mask.
Random question before I take at look at your channel, how would you make a fully functional animatronic full face helmet without eye openings? 🤔 how difficult would it be? To have this technical embedded into 360ish camera view
Dude ur freakin awesome. Great job. I just graduated with a BS in EE. Looking forward to getting a set up like yours so I can make electronics projects with arduino. Very inspired. Subscribed!
Dude what an awesome project. Still waiting for my Prusa Mini to come in. 6 months now and no updates. cant wait to start 3D printing. you got a sub for sure.
Great project. I would like to make one myself Do you have any stl files that I could download before the virus over with and not needing the mask anymore lol? Thank you
Very funny.. Thank you I needed that..try using a storm trooper helmet. I think that's why the Empire made the uniform and helmet white to show contamination.
For drinks I would advise taking a page out of gas masks and put a straw attachment in. And a manual override so when you want it open it stays open for a time or closed until the override is disabled.
Hi, nice engineering there. I saw not long ago some projects with Arduino and AI software recognising different objects. You could try to program some cameras this way. Additionally, having it open/close constantly is kind of messy, I believe a better concept would be to press a button to request open, once the cameras check for humans, no one around it opens until button is pressed again or human detected.
Love your build style, great project. Even a failure allows you to learn a great deal. Maybe a slick mod that would require additional hardware: 2 RPi Zeros running a machine learning model visually looking for people. It wouldnt get triggered by movement or your hands. Contact me if you want more info, I can help.
Thank you for posting this video on the Arduino subreddit, I'm glad I discovered your channel. I would love to be able to engineer products like this regularly. You just make it look so easy. I'm learning though. I hope I'll be as good at this as you are someday! I would love to learn more about all of the tools you regularly use, like 3D printer, what software you use to build your 3D models, etc. Where do you buy all of the electronics and wires, the circuit board thing you soldered to the Arduino? How did you power the Arduino, etc.? I'm not realistically expecting a answers to these questions, but I ask because the video excludes these details. This video is definitely more entertaining than educational, which isn't a bad thing at all.
Hi Corbin, glad you enjoyed it! Yes originally I had a long video include all the details, but less entertaining for sure. Let's see if this make the video better.
A to your Qs: I used fusion360 as main CAD tool, since its free for makers. I have a couple 3D printers, for this project I used JGAURORA A5S, there is a link in description To start with 3D recommending, I recommend something around $200, Ender-3 is a good choice I used PTEG filament, for the ease of use. Pretty much all the electronic stuff are from Amazon, some links in the video description. Hope this helps!
awesome build, only issue is masks arent for you, theyre to prevent you giving it to others.. so if yours is open and you have covid and dont know it, youre breathing those particles freely out into the air (when nobody is around) where they can remain for 3 hours. someone walks through your backdraft and they get it. it defeats the purpose. think of covid like a "smell". if you smell it you catch it. Wearing a mask to prevent the smell from escaping "you" is the purpose of a mask. Opening up a hole allows that smell to release and others to smell it, this contracting it.. i "know" covid doest have a scent.. its just an example
No one cared who I was until I put on the mask
When I saw this I really thought it was like a Micheal Reeves bot and the mask would yell shut up any time it saw someone
Haha that's a great idea! Wish I thought about it earlier

she got used to my stupidity indeed :D
Love it but im giggling...
Your wife cracked me up when she just walked to the wall like a sims character 😂
hahaha, she never listens to my command
DesignMaker, it was really funny, it’s like she was trying her best to follow instruction but took it too literally and keep walking to the wall 😂
Maybe use ultrasonic sensors. Won't trigger with just standard motion (relative or otherwise), but if any person (or object) gets within a predefined range, it triggers,
@@shiny5961 It may be a better solution but I don't think it is for other animals like dogs or cats...
i have a question because i want to try to build this and i'm new at this sort of thing. do ultrasonic sensors only sense humans? and how troublesome is the false positive problem
This was so much fun... I didn't care that it isn't practical in the end. Impressive engineering and very funny delivery!
Definitely enjoyed this! It's amazing engineering and I thought about what if the door closed on the straw and not even several seconds later it happened 😂. Keep up the good fight!
Awesome engineering & video
This was awesomely funny. Love the concept.
add a button to open/close, i think is better, good video
Great work DesignMaker!
you getting your straw in reminded me of the SpaceX ISS docking simulation :D
Love your humour level.
Hilariously ridiculous, I love it
Imperfect Cell has joined the chat..

Love this channel so much, the builds are interesting and the humor is on point. Keep it up!!
Glad you enjoy it! Thanks!
This may have been mentioned, but in theory you could add a small camera and use facial id code to only close when it detects a human face 🤔
interesting concept and gread implementation, but i think activ air flow control with some micro fans and integrated retractable straw are more practical.
if u use some good filters id might be an actuall useable mask
Simply outstanding!👍👍👍
How about just an UV lamp in a tube for fresh air?
All this needs is a manual override button on the mask
Maybe instead of the sensors you can just make a dummy mask where blue button closes and the blue lights light up red button openes and the red lights light up. Would be just as easy to use and alot cheaper?

The issue with ultra sonic though is you couldn't stand near a wall, but that could work since it won't open in a confined space:D
Are you willing to add the STL FiIes so others can print this? Perhaps maybe even sell them? This would be a great item if you have a Large, XLarge and XX-Large sizes available.

THIS == SITH
Really cool concept. Defeats the whole purpose of a mask though. It should stay closed unless you want it to open...
Loved it and I don't even build electronic stuff. You're hilarious. Keep up the good work.
Use ultra sonic sensor instead
hahaha you're awesome! you made my day! hilarious! :')

Thanks for the suggestion, still learning the art of "titling" :D
Awesome. How can I get stl files of 3D model?
Maybe not practical but beyond awesome!
Bane is back, but soo cool ;)
outstanding, looks like you had some fun building that one...
I admire people who bring ideas into physical form very well. Fantastic work!
Wow, this is cool!
SO COOL!!!!
Very good
What problem I should solve next time? Leave a comment below, I'll seriously consider them and come up with something stupid.
Make an alarm clock that will reach out to your face and slap you until you wake up
Not a stupid idea, as you say is valid, although a little modification would be like a sensor that could detect something within like a piece of food or a straw, but hey trial and error right? Great job :D
Face shield with hand movement for eating in public
make it open like a sliding door so that each side retracts into the mask
esta bien guey, como se supone que la va a lavar despues de un tiempo de uso?

Cool project man. Congrats
maybe try opencv face detection. if face detected close it up. could possibly be overcomplicated though

PIR/Radar combo sensor will prevent false triggers.
You must patent this
3D files and codes can be found here: gum.co/BvJAg or support me on Patreon: www.patreon.com/DesignMaker
6:35 that's why we use "reset" button :)
Very entertaining! Make a stripped down version with a push button on and off switch and apply for a patent! My bet is you'll make some bucks.
just put on/off swith or manual trap door. much simpler.
A lot of good work! Need better thinking next time, or not, loved it. :D
抛开设计和制作部分不提,剪辑的也很不错啊!way 2 go 。质量很不错的片子。看到我的id了么(wink
谢谢杏仁哥~
Those sensors are mad unreliable I always hated working with them
Hey better Idea is install blutooth mic
Interesting, could you elaborate? how would that work?
could you, open the 3d files of the mask design please
THIS WAS SO COOL FOR 2 seconds, then instantly became a dumb idea that no one would really use????????????? can't wait to laugh at one on the street?
THis is kind of just functional cosplay gear. I like it

Took me 3 years and 2 months to find this video again. Awesome work dude! 🤘
The mask in thumbnail looks way too cool to be just a mask, it looks like a mask of a character from a marvel movie
shut up and take my money xd
Could you make a hood with a rain sensor that auto deploys .. like in death stranding?
You are defenatly ready for the box.
Fullspastic!
You can use
face recognition soft and cameras for only people-close triggers
Awesome idea
HAHAH! So cool!
