India and Pakistan were united as sub-continent in Asia .As a result of partition between the two countries in 1947.Punjab which was one of the largest province of sub-continent was also divided between the two countries. And the people of Indian and Pakistani Punjab share a common culture and mother tounge(Punjabi) . While back in the history Lahore was considered as one of the most cultured and glorious city of the united Punjab in the sub-continent. So it retains a historical significance and glory therefore in the song Lahore is mentioned in this way.

Can confirm. I'm a Punjabi Hindu. The land was split between the two largest groups of Punjabi's: Muslim and Hindu. My ancestors lived in Lahore (named after and founded by Lord Ram's son Lava). Lahore was predominantly Hindu. We shifted to a pind outside of Jalandhar after partition. The irony is Jalandhar (named after the demon destroyed by Lord Shiva) was predominantly Muslim at the time of partition. Wild to think how a third party (the British) and of course politics of the time can destroy families, ruin lives and shift whole groups of people just because someone believed one way was the best and drew a line on a map. Only Punjabi's that were forced to migrate understand the longing in this song. We've seen it in how our grandparents spoke of partition and their homeland.

It's all references to the tragic partition of India/ Punjab into two - the land of Five Rivers got split into 2 and a half rivers each.
So Chenab (in Pakistan) asks Ravi - split in the middle- how Sutlej (in India) is doing.
These lines always tear me apart ...

It is PUNJABI CULTURE. The culture which is hurt the most when India and Pakistan separated. This language bears the pain of tearing of punjab into two. Punjab from both sides speaks punjabi, shares same culture. But unfortunately, cannot meet. Wish there was only one punjab university. There are many things that still hurt.

Punjab was divided during partition of India in 1947, 75% region of province Punjab went to pak and 25% to India. Majority of Sikh migrated from Pak's Punjab to India fearing slaughtering. Today population of 20 million Sikh in India as India allowed them to flourish whereas 50k exists in pak proves systematic wiping out Sikh population by Islamic Pak. So regionwise Punjab 75 % to pak and 25% to India and population wise 20 million versus 50k
That also explains why India being a diverse country in every aspect and Pak is monolithic

    • @panjabipandit
      @panjabipandit 2 года назад +2

Punjab was divided based on Hindu and Muslim. Sikhs comprised only 14% of the population back then. Punjabi Hindus were concentrated in west Punjab and Muslims in East Punjab. Yet to keep India Hindu and Pakistan Muslim they drew the line as is otherwise you'd have Muslims in Jalandhar and Hindus stuck in Lahore. Punjab is historically the birthplace of Hinduism. The Vedas was written here, Mahabharata happened here, Mata Sita gave birth to her sons Lava (Lahore) and Kusha (Kasur) here. If you look at the map of demographics in 1947, the two largest groups on which Punjab was partitioned was in fact Muslim and Hindu. The state of Punjab was much larger and comprised of much more Hindus than today's Punjab because in the 1960s Haryana and Himachal Pradesh were carved out of Punjab and with them hundreds of thousands of Punjabi Hindus. This lead to the state of Punjab today being primarily Sikh but historically they were not the majority (they were the third. The first largest being Muslim, then Hindu, then Sikh), no district had a Sikh majority and were not a factor in the partition of Punjab by the words of the British. I say this a Punjabi Hindu myself from Jalandhar dist who has heard from my grandparents and studied the documents of the British and Punjabi perspective of partition.

No, Punjab was divided in half between India and Pakistan (so they both got around 50%). Punjab was further divided into Himachal Pradesh and Haryana in 1966. The Indian Punjab after partition was Punjab+Haryana+Himachal Pradesh. You are thinking about present day Punjab.

Punjab which was the wealthiest, agriculturally and culturally rich state bore the biggest brunt of the partition between India and Pakistan in 1947. In the song, various references, 'Chenab', 'Ravi', 'Satluj' refer to the rivers that flow across the regions along with Peshawar, Lahore etc. that are cities of present-day Pakistan-Punjab. Music and culture though do not have a start and end-point-it just flows despite the divisions!

  • @TheUnspeakableTruth01

India was split into 2 parts by British colonisers. West Pakistan, east pakistan ( currently Bangladesh) and India. West Pakistan and east pakistan were one nation during partition.
Also, Punjab province was also split into two parts. West Pakistan got 55% of Punjab of that time and India had 45%.
Lahore and Peshawar are cities of west Pakistan who were part of Punjab province.
Same people, same culture, same language but now are separated by borders. History is full of bloodshed.

Actually it's pronounced Panjab & panjabi even though it's written as Punjab.
Like how u pronounce "pun" not "pan" or "poon".
Punjab is present in both Pakistan & India. It's a province in Pakistan & a state in India. Lahore is in Pakistan Punjab province.
It was spit into two on partition. Now Sikh & Hindu population is predominant in Punjab in India & Muslim population in Pakistan as is.

The song has many references to the partition of India in 1947. The state that lost the most was Punjab. Which was basically divided into 2 Punjab's on either side of the border .
That's why the the feeling of longing towards the cities of Lahore and Peshawar , both lost to partition.
The name Punjab means ' land of 5 rivers' , and they got divided as well, that's why the reference about Satluej, Raavi and Chenab.
Gurdas Maan is a legend in Punjabi music industry. He can be given the credit to a large extent in bringing the Punjabi folk on to the national as well as international stage.
