I sold this car after 6 years and 165,000 miles. This was when the clutch gave out- which is excellent- and I had zero other problems. Fords are very reliable if you take care of them (well the manual transmission ones at least).
I have a 2012 SE sedan and I'm happy with it. I'm 6 feet tall with long legs and I have plenty of leg room. It's also good in the snow. The traction control really works well and with the snow that the St. Louis area has had lately, it's snow-handling skills have been put to the test.
Thank Ford for making a great car. After 8 years and 100k it is still going strong unlike the Hyundai elantra a family member owned which has had multiple problems including the front axle being removed which was under warranty but who wants to spend that kind of money for a car only to have the axle removed.
It amazes me how good fuel mileage is with today's smooth and powerful engines. When the government mandated higher fuel economy the car makers actually answered without much sacrifice. Props to engineers.
We have a 2012 Focus SFE, and we love it. We have averaged 43 mpg on trips, and the SFE package was worth the money. My wife used to drive an average of 90 miles per day, and it has that transmission that so many folks complain about. Yes, our car had the software update, and that quelled the clutch shudder. It needed a transmission control module, engine timing cover, valve cover gasket, and had a transmission leak at 99,000 miles (new clutches were installed). Ford’s extended warranty paid for all of these, and it’s been a fine car. If customers only knew how the transmission works, for it’s a fun car to drive, and the fuel mileage is excellent. We would buy another! It’s sad that the SFE wasn’t available very much, and I blame the dealers for not ordering this model and keeping it in stock. You buy a compact car to commute and get excellent fuel mileage, and this one does it well.
2012 focus se here. Automatic with 220k miles. Trans has shuddered, sputtered, and clunked since 50k miles. Ford TSB says to peg it through the gears multiple times and that seems to quell the shudder for a bit. If it's starting to hard shift, try the TSB routine and just drive it generally harder/more aggressive and you'll get more miles out of these usually.
I love our 2017 Ford Focus SEL Sedan in Oxford White. Our focus is fully loaded except the cold weather package and has voice activated navigation as a 795.00 option and more!! I have several 0-60 on this car and the engine is great. This car is fun to drive and it’s pretty quick off the line for 160 hp.
I highly recommend if you’re considering a Focus, get one with select shift. If you shift as soon as possible every gear, and hold high gears up hills, rediculous fuel economy is possible. I often get 44 mpg on the highway, and I just have a regular SE with the sport appearance package. Before I put a more aggressive grille on it though, I was getting 47 mpg on the highway, and on a road where coasting is possible, it returned with 53 mpg. It’s a little fuel economy monster. The engine is reliable too. The only problem is the transmission, the PowerShift is not well designed.
you're completely missing my point... i'm not saying disregard everything and buy a porsche boxster. the focus has a large trunk, good fuel economy, only car in the class to have a DSG instead of automatic, and has the best interior, AND offers good value... on top of having the best driving dynamics, which is the point of a car to begin with.
i don't understand your argument. i'm 19, and my car is breaking down so i'm looking to lease a car in this class. i've narrowed it down to the focus and the gti (of course the gti is more expensive) because they're practical, small, look good, and get fantastic fuel economy. however, the reason those two stand out is BECAUSE they're driver oriented. why would i want a car that's not driver oriented? that's like buying a TV which isn't viewer oriented, or a meal which doesn't taste good.
I just bought one of these last week. Not a bad car for a daily commuter. I got the 5 speed manual and get 32mpg in the city. I drive it fairly slow though, I have my Z cars for speed.
My 2017 SEL auto got up to 47mpg on the highway when driven around 50-60, how ever, the transmission behaves much better at speeds of 70mph+ What I found is that the DCT found in this vehicle is very clunky when driven at an engine rpm of 2,000 or less. However, if you keep the RPMs above 2k, she’ll shift as smooth as butter. You just have to use the + and - button on the gear shift to control the transmission better
Respond to this video... Carandriver got the exact same time of 7.6 seconds. I think both Motorweek and Carandriver rev the engines before launching while many other companies do the 0-60 from idle.
@Yakbreeder If the rear discs are not vented, they generally don't have a significant advantage over rear drum brakes. It's more of a hype thing really, since most high performance sport cars use disc brakes. Today's rear drum brakes have vastly improved over the years.
The Focus has the best styling in the compact car segment ... the only thing is I can't see out the front of the hood when parking, which might result in unwanted scratches to the bumper ...
I wonder if I should trade in my 97 Volvo 850 for this? She is getting old and has been needing lots of repairs lately so I'm not sure if I should keep fixing her or buy a new car? It only has 285,000km on it though.
Hyundais don't have "troubles with everything." I have a 4 year old Sonata 3.3L V6 with 85k miles that has no issues at all. Returns 31 mpg in highway commuting every day, sometimes 32.
I have a Ruby Red 2013 Focus Titanium Hatchback with a dealer installed cold air intake and I absolutely love it! I just got 45mpg with winter tires and a loaded car. I cant wait till I can put the summer tires on and break it in some more.
I had a 2013 Focus S 5 spd with the upgraded infotainment display. I was really disappointed it did not include cruise control. Other than that is was a really nice driving car. 160hp really felt more powerful than it was. I hardly ever see these on the road anymore. They weren’t cared for and the automatic was known for odd shifting behavior.
I love this car. I have the Ford Focus SE Sport, early production with the sport tuned suspension and alloy wheels. Great handling, and enough power to play with. But never got anywhere near that mpg.
hi u seem to own a Focus, hows the ride quality many people complain its 2 stiff compared to VW golf or Jetta which is more comfy etc, what do u think, and hows the rear seat legroom and hows the Power is it adequate or is it laggy in its delivery, hows the cabin does it feel luxurious?
Just wanted to chime in since so many people like to diss the focus - as an owner, I can tell you that I usually get around 30 Mpg average around town and 38 when on highways. Plus it's got the sporty titanium suspension package. The myford touch system is not the most responsive touchscreen, but works seamlessly with my iPhone for music and calls the instant my car turns on.
actually ford signed a contract with the government that they'll start insourcing which means taking the jobs that were outsourced before and bringing it back to the states to increase the jobs availability
@Fussinated Who wouldn't keep a car for a year if it is running good? Leases are at least 36 months. And another example my dad has a 2001 Toyota Camry which is now 11 years old so yea that extra 495 dollars would be worth it.
This car feels like it could have been a good car, but the transmission is HORRIBLE. It never feels like it is shifting correctly. It takes too much throttle to initiate a down-shift, and too long to put itself back in gear, then when it does put itself back in gear, it just neutral-drops itself into gear. Using the select-shift significantly helps, but why not just get the manual if you have to use that all the time? I noticed a 2 MPG increase when using the select shifter on my daily commute.
@justthebestgolfer...go down a couple of comments, you started to talk about the 2013 escape. You were talking about the focus then went with the escape. The escape was proven to be the manufactures fault, not ford, what did ford do? Gave rentals to every customer while they fixed it, I never heard of an automaker that does that. Lastly, read on the elantra a little more, a man made a big complaint that he couldn't even get over 20 mpg after driving 30,000 miles.
Very refined car with excellent handling. We have a late production 2012 Focus SEL hatch and the transmission is perfectly fine. The only car that can compete in this class is the Golf TDI, the rest are left in the dust.
Im looking to buy a used car and i cant make my mind if i should buy the 2012 ford focus 5 doors or a 2012 hyundai accent 5doors I want great mpg and a car that isnt too boring to drive. The focus has more power but im scared of their reliability
I get about 26 in the city with the air on and 32 without the air. Highway I get about 35. Don't forget I'm 21 so I drive a little different that usual people. I love my car! (2013 Focus SE)
I can't dispute that it's a good looking car, but as an owner of 2012 since it was a year old I find myself disappointed. Been to the dealer 5 times for the dual clutch. Out of warranty now and in need of another replacement. It has the turning radius of a bus! No legroom in the back if you're a driver over 6 feet. Useless fold-down seats because they don't fold anywhere near flat. I have the Titanium version. I do like the park assist and rear camera.
Hang on; it may largely be designed in Germany, but the team of Engineers was multicultural, from all around the world. Chief Engineer Jim Hughes is an American, for instance. That just goes to show how we can all benefit from positive international relations, acceptance, diversity, and globalization. Anyways, other than that, very good review. And as far as buyers' opinion, I absolutely love my titanium hatchback. Incredible car. And yes, it's 7.6 sec to 60mph w/ the "hidden" launch control.
Other than the myford touch system, Ford's ratings on dependability and reliability were on par with the japanese automakers. Ford has had their.fair share of vehicles with over a million miles, what about hyundai?
@justthebestgolfer...is that why hyundai is being sued for false advertisement on their gas mileage ratings on the elantra? Recalls on the escape were 10,000 trucks. What about the 220,000 hyundai sonata's recalled for the air bag problem? Hyundai beats around the bush and hides their problems, why is it that many sonata owners are complaining of the car steering to the left? The only reason Ford dropped in reliability was mainly because of the ford mytouch system was to complicated for people.
@Intechdude300 I wanted the Kona Blue when I ordered my Focus a couple weeks ago. It was discontinued because of the tsunami in Japan. It has been replaced by Sonic Blue. Actually its a better blue than Kona because in different light levels it take on different shades of blue. Ranging from blue to green to purple. I did not go for the hatch because I didn't like rear lights.
This was actually my 2nd choice of car to buy.But lucky for me I bought the Hyundai Elantra Limited. After seeing all the problems with this car on RUclips.Im glad I got the Elantra which is car of the year in 2011&2012 for its class:)
Yeah thats why the new fusion is the eye candy right? I never stated the escape was a truck, now did I? I know what it is. Im talking about the 2012 and 2013 sonata, READ slowly. Trust me alot of people will complain about road noise in a compact car. That one guy didnt have a lemon, it was alot of people. The reason he made cover was because he was a loyal hyundai customer who stated "I will never buy another hyundai again."
Center info does not function correctly freezes sometimes and this is not the nav screen its the smaller screen. It hesitates and gear hunts. These are not things that come to light in a short test drive but a day or 2 after ownership. I am not happy with this car. Real world mpg is 29mpg 50/50 city hwy 10 over. I should have gotten the mazda 3 but for the money fell for the leather seats and interior looks. I hate the wondering and numbness of the steering wheel. I hate my back hurting....
i've driven both the focus and the elantra, and i was woefully disappointed by the latter. that's fine that you don't want to race people, but the elantra didn't even present adequate acceleration, and the ride and handling of the focus was a million times better than the elantra. i actually think it might have better steering than the aforementioned gti. like i said, there's a difference between street racing everyone and buying a car that's actually good at driving.
I tested a 1.8 litre Elantra GT (Hyundai i30) when it first arrived in Canada and I was scared entering the highway, like I was going to be rear-ended because it was so slow.
This is mostly for (1989rs500) My girlfriend just got the SE sedan… It,s got almost everything the Titanium has minus a few bells and whistles. I LOVE driving that car. It's fun, it's stylish. Hers is black with the black rims and tinted windows. We get compliments every time we stop for gas. I have an 09 GTI that I love as well. BUT… I will actually be selling my car to buy one of the new Titanium Hatchback focus. I will miss the Speed of the GTI though.
I would only get one if it was the brighter red. I've seen one around town with some nice wheels on it and it marks me jealous even though I have the Cruze.
I have a 2015 Focus Titanium and I get 26-39. My actual gas mileage is 43 mpg, great vehicle! And the transmission is a dual clutch automated manual not an automatic. Pretty much a manual shifted by a computer, do the research.
@justthebestgolfer what u said about the interior is not true. my 09 focus has really good quality materials and hasn't fallen apart yet or even come close. of you want a car that falls apart after a year buy a Chevy and ya I'm saying that from experience
2010/2011 Sonata also have this problem. Watch vid's "My 2011 Hyundai Sonata Steering Problem" and "2011 Sonata pulls pulling left" Things like that are terribly dangerous!
go for the hatchback i got mine last week black and i went for the se model didnt realy care for the myford touch screen that added almost 3k onto the price i have a garmen for nav and custom-ed my own sub woofer i love mine
hasn't the Focus always been German design? whats new? I thought thats why its the only U.S. sub compact that is actually reliable. Anyways best looking yet for sure.
@justthebestgolfer ahhhh ok ok I see what ur sayin but I do have the ford sync thing. but ya the build quality did go down from the last last gen focus cause my focus has best in class materials
Motorweek is usually good with their reviews. They left out several things. The seating position is for people with long arms and short legs. The seat is uncomfortable on long trips the lower lumber area is positioned in a way that you have to lean the seat back to feel comfortable but by that time you are too far back for the steering wheel. The transmission is awful. During brisk acceleration it jerks and is unstable. There are electronic glitches. Power windows dome lights center media phone
i own the 2012 ford fiesta drives beautiful 5 speed manual and now thinking of buying the 2013 focus for my wife also manual transmission. please don't talk s h i t of what my country makes be proud of our country buy AMERICAN MADE CARS and don't send money over seas. GOD BLESS AMERICA.
can any1 explain to me some of the pros and cons about the powershift transmission im thinking about getting this car but ive heard that theres been issues with using the powershift transmission
Some facts about Hyundai: - most things is out of warranty after 40000 kilometres - they are expensive to maintaine - poor handling - troubles with interior quality - troubles with transmitions - still troubles with stering Facts about Focus: - in most (or every) test Focus has great rates. - reasonably priced maintain - it only has some troubles with MySync, wich will be soon removed. - it has great traction - great fuel rates - great styling - feels up market and much more good stuff.
@MrVnick1 I at one point I like the Elantra better too. But if you look at the front end of the car, it looks like a big happy face. After I saw the happy face, now it looks like a car that can teach children their ABC,s.
@Yakbreeder Most base model compact cars are often equipped with drum brakes anyway Civics except the EX models Corollas Standard drum brakes on all models Cruze higher models have standard vented disc brakes The only manufacturers that has standard disc brakes on compact sedans/hatch on all their models is the Elantra. However the front discs are not vented. Kia also has standard disc brakes on all trims Just be lucky that Ford didn't take the Corollas approach.
I think theres a misprint 0-60 in 7.6 sec? I dont think so. Maybe 8.6. Other reviews have it close to 9 sec. 16.3 1/4 mile at 89mph the gearing must be wack. Mine did 0-60 in about 9 sec. Maybe if you had a gal of fuel cool temperatures going down hill and a tail wind it might dip into the 8s but 7.6? No way. Goto mpgomatic and see the comparison to a mazda 3 skyactiv. Theyre both about 9 sec. Dont know what happened here motorweek is usually pretty spot on. The 31mpg is way off its more like 24
Btw Im Canadian¬ American.I got the Elantra not for the driving experience.I could care less of that.I got it cause of gas prices&its the best in its class.Elantras got more legroom in the back than aNissian Maxima(&this is a Mid Size Sedan&the Elantras aCompact). The Elantras got aSporty look inside&outside of the car.Good trunk room&lots of Tech.Still fun car2drive with a little bit of power cause its a light car.Sonata got power.Price of the Elantra&all the Kia&Hyundai cars cant be beat:)
@justthebestgolfer - please don't say you're Canadian - you're discrediting us as idiots that can't reason nor spell correctly. Sheesh! Learn how to use an apostrophe why don't you?
I know that the Kia cars were design by the guy that use to design Audi..lol.Thats the main reason Y they look great. It was designed in Europe. But the assembly of the car parts & body is done in AMERICA or even CANADA:)
I sold this car after 6 years and 165,000 miles. This was when the clutch gave out- which is excellent- and I had zero other problems. Fords are very reliable if you take care of them (well the manual transmission ones at least).

omg a fellow st.louisan how did it do in the blizzard back in December where everyone (including me) got stuck for 14 hours
Such a shame the DCT gearbox ended being a disaster and ruined what otherwise could’ve been a solid & reliable car.
Love my 2012 focus SEL and I'm happy and after 10 years still going strong..
I agree. I have a SE and I must say that driving this car is a pleasure.
Thank Ford for making a great car. After 8 years and 100k it is still going strong unlike the Hyundai elantra a family member owned which has had multiple problems including the front axle being removed which was under warranty but who wants to spend that kind of money for a car only to have the axle removed.

Had a 2012 Focus Titanium, loved that car, think the best highway mileage I hit was 43.

Those are near civic vx numbers omg
My parent has a ‘17 Focus SE with the 6-speed DCT. I hate that transaxle so much, but the car just drives so well.
If i need to know about a car before i buy it.. i head to MT first.. youve touched everything over the years tku❤
you're completely missing my point... i'm not saying disregard everything and buy a porsche boxster. the focus has a large trunk, good fuel economy, only car in the class to have a DSG instead of automatic, and has the best interior, AND offers good value... on top of having the best driving dynamics, which is the point of a car to begin with.

@davidhalifax dont worry about those things. The focus has a backup camera and also can parallel park itself.
I just bought one of these last week. Not a bad car for a daily commuter.
I got the 5 speed manual and get 32mpg in the city.
I drive it fairly slow though, I have my Z cars for speed.
How was it long term? I'm looking at a used 2012 now.
This is a total win for Ford. I love new Focus and the ST model wil be mine.
This comment didn’t age well
this is the best looking ford focus for sure.
My 2017 SEL auto got up to 47mpg on the highway when driven around 50-60, how ever, the transmission behaves much better at speeds of 70mph+
What I found is that the DCT found in this vehicle is very clunky when driven at an engine rpm of 2,000 or less.

Hyundai does NOT meet the 40MPG... I just read that they've admitted to falsifying the numbers. NICE!
My friend gets a gas card from Hyundai every year because of the lies.
@Yakbreeder

Fuckass is the name for Focus. Thanks mate, hopefully one day Ford will wake up and make this car bigger.

Wait, why does the US government fuel economy book at 1:20 show a European mark 2 Focus?
@southernclassik every ford looks amazing now.
my 5 speed 2012 focus gets over 41 mpg on the highway, you can go a long way on little gas.
7 years later, any regrets? I'm actually looking at a used 2012 now.
@nismotech i don't think so. I think its the way the light is shining on it.

Zach 👨🏻 driving a 2013 Ford Focus titanium sedan from Guelph to Downtown Toronto on Highways 401 427 and Gardiner Expressway
Interior quality compared to steering wheel which has it's own live...
Hyundai on Huntdie?
@Intechdude300 I wanted the Kona Blue when I ordered my Focus a couple weeks ago. It was discontinued because of the tsunami in Japan. It has been replaced by Sonic Blue. Actually its a better blue than Kona because in different light levels it take on different shades of blue. Ranging from blue to green to purple. I did not go for the hatch because I didn't like rear lights.
Big difference between highway and city MPG, so don't expect to get almost 40 city, you would be lucky to get 30--
This was actually my 2nd choice of car to buy.But lucky for me I bought the Hyundai Elantra Limited.
I have a '16 ST - it is a manual. Yours is an automatic. Stop kidding yourself.
+gypsykingg it's a dual clutch manual automatic. in theory it technically is a manual transmission.
+wtfruthinking1986 Not in the least bit. A manual must have a driver operated clutch (foot pedal) and a driver operated gear selector (stick shifter).
+gypsykingg I know what a manual gearbox is I've been driving an 18-wheeler for 12 years.
+wtfruthinking1986 Okay then, now that we've established that - this is not a manual transmission, it's an automatic
Watch vid's "My 2011 Hyundai Sonata Steering Problem" and "2011 Sonata pulls pulling left"
Things like that are terribly dangerous!
go for the hatchback i got mine last week black and i went for the se model didnt realy care for the myford touch screen that added almost 3k onto the price i have a garmen for nav and custom-ed my own sub woofer i love mine
@2:03 Is that condensation in the LED TURN signal lamp???? WTF?? This is a new car!
@SouthshoreVice
The ST is coming with an EcoBoost Turbo 4 with 250+ hp. It'll compete with the VW GTI and Mazda Speed3 - the 2 hot hatches.
Cruze is awesome car. Would def buy one.
Türk var mı Türk 🇹🇷🇹🇷
@diulesing7 you're right, I have one and it'll do 0-60 in no less than 8.2 seconds
hasn't the Focus always been German design? whats new? I thought thats why its the only U.S. sub compact that is actually reliable.
Anyways best looking yet for sure.
The Steering wheel issues R not a Problem anymore cause of the new 2012 models:)
@justthebestgolfer ahhhh ok ok I see what ur sayin but I do have the ford sync thing. but ya the build quality did go down from the last last gen focus cause my focus has best in class materials
Best car in it's class.
Isn’t yours made in Mexico?
can any1 explain to me some of the pros and cons about the powershift transmission im thinking about getting this car but ive heard that theres been issues with using the powershift transmission
Some facts about Hyundai:
- most things is out of warranty after 40000 kilometres
- they are expensive to maintaine
- poor handling
- troubles with interior quality
- troubles with transmitions
- still troubles with stering
Facts about Focus:
- in most (or every) test Focus has great rates.
- reasonably priced maintain
- it only has some troubles with MySync, wich will be soon removed.
- it has great traction
- great fuel rates
- great styling
- feels up market
and much more good stuff.
@MrVnick1 I at one point I like the Elantra better too. But if you look at the front end of the car, it looks like a big happy face. After I saw the happy face, now it looks like a car that can teach children their ABC,s.
Looks like a cross between a Saab and a Volvo. Not too shabby.
@Yakbreeder
Most base model compact cars are often equipped with drum brakes anyway
Civics except the EX models
Corollas Standard drum brakes on all models
Cruze higher models have standard vented disc brakes
The only manufacturers that has standard disc brakes on compact sedans/hatch on all their models is the Elantra. However the front discs are not vented. Kia also has standard disc brakes on all trims
Just be lucky that Ford didn't take the Corollas approach.
im not a huge fan of this car but im sure its a pretty descent car. I am anxious about the 2013 nissan sentra and i like the subaru impreza
I know this is from 2011-2012 but their intro music and font got me feeling like it's 1993
You know his Focus has baby thoubles ;) Like Kia & Hyundai with steering wheel.
Hyundai has/had problems with self turning steering wheel. On yt is some videos about it.
It's terribly dangerous.
Great car!
@AviTheBlader
Ford confirmed a US ST a while back. Look it up.
I know that the Kia cars were design by the guy that use to design Audi..lol.Thats the main reason Y they look great. It was designed in Europe. But the assembly of the car parts & body is done in AMERICA or even CANADA:)
I wonder if ford was ready for that huge dual clutch lawsuit.
You can buy Focus without "MyFord Touch" ;)
Is even something like that offered in Kia&Hyundai?
Rofl the focus is not made in america, many korean cars for the market are
