They got their start by winning a TV competition for a cappella on American TV in 2011. At that time, the trio in back were just 19. Avi and Kevin had finished college so a few years older. The beat boxer is Kevin Olusola. You should check out some of his solo work on RUclips, too. They all perform outside of Pentatonix.

I am like a kid at Christmas when I see you have reacted to a PTX song. I have watched other reactions you have done and enjoy them, but with PTX there is always surprise and wonder on your faces. Other songs where they just sit or stand are Say Something, Run To You, Mad World, and Can't Help Falling in Love. So glad there are still so many songs to react too!!
This is confusing! All five of them sing Michael Jackson. I don't know if that says how great Pentatonix is, or how great Michael Jackson was! I really like the wizard of ahhhs and Gold. Great Reaction! 😁😁😎

I could just listen to you two for hours. The love, kindness and respect you show towards each other is lovely to see. And, of course the joy you find in PTX :-)
It's almost a necessity to rotate the bulk of a song (or medley) between members of an a capella group. Live concerts, - performing 2 hours each show, 4 and 5 days a week, with no back up band for instrumental interludes - is reason enough to share the spotlight. There are no passengers on this train, but a crew with a shared destination.
The most interesting thing for me about the "Evolution of..." videos is that they are filmed live, and done in just one take - no cuts or edits. I saw an interview by a couple of their recording engineers, who said they usually did about 4 takes of the video, and then pick the one they wanted to release. In the "Evolution of Music" video, they start back in the 11th century, and then come forward in time with examples of how popular music has changed through time. They naturally spend a lot of time in the more recent years, so they have a number of songs from the last 50 years or so. Since it's got any number of songs and songwriters included, I've heard that the copyright blocks aren't nearly as fierce as they are on many of PTX's own songs. If you'd like to see just how much work it takes to make it look so effortless, check out "The Recording of Evergreen".

You are right on the money when you say they do it because they love it and its truly in their blood. They spend almost all their time together and even when running errands and doing everyday tasks they are singing and harmonizing. They are so fun, funny and humble. It's really a joy to see so much talent and a desire to make it in the industry but still remain grounded. They are all involved in things that keep them grounded. Examples of this are that Avi Kaplan the bass is a co founder of A 'Capella Academy for kids in Los Angeles among other things. Scott Hoying (tall blonde baritone) cofounded Acapop (for younger kids) among other things. Each of them is involved in important foundations/organizations outside of the group. They mentioned their documentary on the after pitch of this performance. Its entitled On My Way Home. It is a behind the scenes view of them on tour as well as on stage. It's amazing to watch them and their level of talent and creativity but also see that they are so normal and kind. I think you will really enjoy it. Thank you so much for your reactions to PTX. It’s so much easier with this video to see what everyone is doing and in the music videos usually the focus is on one or, like in Daft Punk so much is going on visually that it’s hard to keep up with what each of them is doing. Loved this reaction 🙂 I agree that each track has a strongest presence. Not ALL of them but you know who stands out to you, and it may not be the same person for everyone. They all just bring something amazing to the group, and it works. Avi was a great loss, but Matt definitely is a great bass. They're both just different in their talent.
This type of arrangement, many songs in one, is called a "medley" in English. Daft Punk was also a medley. Pentatonix always strives to pick the right member to take the lead, from section to section and song to song. Everyone says "Awww!" when they hear Kevin on this! ETA: Regarding PTX messing up - in one of the concerts this past holidays, Kirstin made an error and then compounded it by dropping her water bottle. (Come to think of it, she was in the first stages of her pregnancy at that point - the baby is due sometime this summer, at best guess.)

This was released in June of 2015.....4 years after they won the competition show called "The Sing Off", a contest for a cappella groups. There are more Evolution of....videos to go....There are Evolution of Music, Beyonce, Rihanna, and Ariana Grande. "Home" is a medley of songs with "home" references. They did this during the pandemic, each in their own home. They each have their own home recording studios. Thank you! It's always a treat to hear your reactions to PTX.
If you like where they are all just sitting together or standing in a group, you should ck out Gold by them. In the orginal version, the artist couldn't do what Mitch is about to with auto tune
Oh, my…consider Say Something next. (My husband is poking me and saying “Mad World”!). Honestly, either choice will be stunning. Say Something is arranged like a true break up song should be - equal parts sorrow, anguish and, yes, raw anger. Mad World is a psychoanalyst’s dream. Disturbing, beautiful and dark in one well-produced package. You would enjoy either choice. OH! One point in favor of Say Something…Kevin is on his cello throughout the piece while beatboxing simultaneously. I don’t think you’ve seen Kevin play Beyoncé, ( his cello’s name), in any of your choices yet.
The only suggestion I can think to give you two is after pausing to give your comments, backtrack a few seconds on the video to regain the flow and not miss something special. Otherwise, you two are crushing it with these Pentatonix reactions!❣️💓🥰

One thing I try to do, is to focus just one person throughout and rewatch it and then focus on another person. Obviously, that is for when you watch it multiple times. Although they make it prefect, it doesn’t start out perfect. They have the talent, but have to work hard to get it the way they want it and they’ve always had a high standard for themselves. You can see that on some of the behind the scenes videos. Or you could check out something like Superfruit “Hip Hop goes Broadway” 1 and 2. Scott (tall blonde) and Mitch (high tenor) had a side project called Superfruit. They show the bloopers and when they weren’t perfect in their video after the Subscribe sign. Of course, most of their bloopers were them laughing.

Great review again! . I would recomend that you,ll see Kevin Olasulo (The beatboxer) solocover of Dawn. There you,ll see his many talents. He can play between 60-70 different instrument and is prof. trained on Chello. Check it out! :)
Oh, I love you two! If you want to see Kevin the beatboxer, check out his channel on YT, KOver (kevin olusola) in the cover of Down. He can be a one person of sound. He loops, and has his own studio. His talent is out of this world! He also plays Cello (world class) and Saxophone. He played at Carnegie Hall in New York with both instruments. When Scott (tall blonde guy) found him through a YT video beatboxing while playing the cello he called him and asked him to come aboard the group for the Sing Off competition. He was in Medical School at the time. They won the contest in Season Three and YT has all the songs they sang. (for a fun fact) They auditioned for the show 1 day after they all met. Interesting! Hello, I Love your reactions. There are so many songs to choose from. If you want a cool original song watch Love Again. If you want a somber song, watch Mad World. If you want a a upbeat song , Watch their original, Sing. If you want a glorious song, Watch Amazing Grace. The list goes on and on. Another couple great original songs are Coffee in Bed and Water.
You might consider going back further after each pause. No one minds hearing a whole section again, and it helps to be oriented in the complex arrangement. You two are really great together, and your reactions are very interesting. You don't talk too much--you could talk a little more, I think. I'm especially fond of Mad World, but really there aren't any bad choices. There are some which showcase other things at which they excel, things you haven't even seen yet.

I am SO glad I found your channel. Your reactions are so honest and interesting. I agree, in ANY of their "Evolution of" videos, it's much easier to follow who's doing what. They don't have all the production that's involved with a lot of the others. Just them and a couple of microphones. I'd like to see you two react to "Sing" or "My favorite things" soon. Oh, I love you two! If you want to see Kevin the beatboxer, check out his channel on YT, KOver (kevin olusola) in the cover of Down. He can be a one person of sound. He loops, and has his own studio. His talent is out of this world! He also plays Cello (world class) and Saxophone. He played at Carnegie Hall in New York with both instruments. When Scott (tall blonde guy) found him through a YT video beatboxing while playing the cello he called him and asked him to come aboard the group for the Sing Off competition. He was in Medical School at the time. They won the contest in Season Three and YT has all the songs they sang. (for a fun fact) They auditioned for the show 1 day after they all met. Interesting! You might consider going back further after each pause. No one minds hearing a whole section again, and it helps to be oriented in the complex arrangement. You two are really great together, and your reactions are very interesting. You don't talk too much--you could talk a little more, I think. I'm especially fond of Mad World, but really there aren't any bad choices. There are some which showcase other things at which they excel, things you haven't even seen yet.
