    What I love about the M240 is it's exactly what a digital M should be to capture the feel of Leica film cameras. If you use it how it's intended to be used-- which is damn near treating it like a film camera-- then it may very well be the only camera you ever need. It works perfectly.
    If you do outpace what it can do.. fine, move up to the M10 or M11. They're great cameras, absolutely. They are just M240s with added capability, sure... but it comes at the cost of stepping slightly away from what is a really quintessential M experience. The M240 does not take those steps. Yes, I'm ignoring that it technically has video lol.
    Agree about the screen. We should really be ignoring the screen anyway, so the M240 makes that super easy. It's nearly unusable lol. But that's awesome. We should be watching the city and using the OVF not any sort of screen.

      I'm with you 100% in the way you are thinking. It's exacly what I feel about the M240. I am curious about the M9 now though haha. Might have to look into getting one of those too, one that isn't corroded hopefully haha.

    One of the big plusses of the X100 series (I still use the F) is the OVF, which really allows you to be in the moment (but then you need to be prepared to work with the RAW files, because you only have the histogram for exposure). I love that you can switch between OVF and EVF in a split of a second.

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I use an m6 and am considering a switch to digital, either m240 or m10. I’ve heard some folks talk about the m10 losing highlights to the point that they always underexpose to protect them. I’m curious if this is something you’ve experienced with your m10 and maybe if this is something you like better about the m240’s image as well? Thanks!

    • @RadsbyCo
      @RadsbyCo  9 месяцев назад +1

      Ive definitely notice that. The m10r would be better if you want a newer one with more dynamic range. I always underexpose my shots in general, both on the m240 and m10. But it's common practice to do on digital in general so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

    i sold my 262 (lighter version of the 240) and i regret it. youre right about the rendering, very beautiful colors, not as vintage as the ccd m9 but still very vibrant and interesting with great contrast too.
    not sure about low light though unless noise is either removed in post or grain added for the gritty look. for night i prefer my a7sII with leica lenses.
    m10 is slimmer but feels weird in the hand because its just as tall so i would say m240 with a cheap chinese thumb grip is the way to go and get the 262 if you dont need live view and want it even lighter.
    unlike other youtubers that showcase their actual photos, yours are actually good so post more videos showcasing your work and process. thanks..

      The M262 is the sleeper "best" digital M. TBF, I shot film M's going back to the 1980's and only owned the M-E (M9) and the 262. Never really liked the M-E colors. Agree with the colors out of this sensor. Who needs video in an M? Now I just need to fall in love with making images again.

      Havent used one but I did look at them before deciding on m240. If you can live with the slighly larger m240 and cheaper price then go for the m240 instead. Id rather buy an m10 instead of m262 to be honest if I’m pushing in even more money into the M system.

    The M240 was my first Leica. The slowness definitely makes it feel more analogue, but when I got the M10 I found it more reliable/speedy for work (while still enjoying the process). Ended up replacing the M240 with the M10-P just to have the same sensor on both cameras for work, but I do miss the M240!
    There’s something special about the red framelines on the M240 as well.
    M240’s screen - in my opinion it’s still better than a pre-2023 Sony LCD screen.

    Great review! I went with the 240 as my first M camera for all the same reasons. I could have gotten a m10 but it just didnt make sense with the 240 being such a good and cheaper option. I will probably upgrade(or get a new main M and keep the 240 as backup), and I agree the jump should be to the m11(or even m12 if it takes me long enough. The noisy green shadows are reminiscent of some films Ive shot, a lot of people hate the low light performance in this camera but I like it. I think this older camera has made me realize how overhyped new gear is and the negligible difference it makes in terms of image quality.

I don't know if it's the lens or the camera but the M 240 has a specific look to it. Low light is usable till 3200 but then you can have f/1.4 lenses. Great video. I wish there were more reassuring opinions out there on the 240. I took a bit of a leap of faith 2 months ago and bought a 240 and a 40mm Summicron.
    I was a bit nervous hearing people complain about how big it is, how bad the screen is, and how poor it is in low light. God damn.. every single one of those points are so over blown it's crazy. It's barely thicker than my Q2, who needs the screen?, and the low light has been tremendously better than what I was anticipating.

    great video Alex! M240 is still an amazing tool. I also own both the M240 and the M10-P but I still lean to the M240. my work is predominantly black and white and the film mode and contrast filter settings make a huge difference. I bought the M10-P for the WiFi giving the ability to download on the move. The other new addition on the M10-P is the touch screen. the quieter shutter is nice but the M240 is quite enough. Yes the M10 has a better screen but the type in the menu is smaller harder to read. the thickness between the two is not that big a difference. Viewfinder, no difference really. I love the fact that on the M240 you can change the frame line cover to red. I use red frame lines when I'm in colour profile so I know I;m shooting colour. The M240 also captures video and the quality is very good especially for a camera that is 12 year old. Battery life , there is no comparison the M240 lasts a very long time. I don't use the screen to often or Live view so I can shoot all day without having to worry about it. LOVE my M240 and it is my go to rangefinder !

      Contrast is more about the lens selection than anything. If you want less contrasty images go for vintage styled lenses. Voigtländer 35mm 1.4 nokton is a good example. Especially the single coated (SC) version. Or just go vintage lenses in general.

      I'm so curious about the M9, the color rendition of that cameras is bonkers. I think photographers don't really need screens except for double checking that something hasn't gone terribly wrong haha. It is good to show models how they look though, but they don't really care about the screen at that point, it's more about how they position their bodies etc.

      Never tried the m8. It is the one where you need a ir filter to make the colors more correct right? How do you like it?

      I actually haven't used it that much since getting the 1.4 version. I do like the rendering of it but the weight just makes me leave it at home sadly 😅

      @@RadsbyCo I totally get your point about the size, it's chunky and kinda defeats the purpose of compact rangefinder set up. But it produces beautiful images though.

    People’s opinions are subjective but for me, I’m the total opposite. I disliked the weight and the rendering of the m240… the M10 is lighter and the rendering and default colors are closer to the m9 although not the same . I found the m240 files , like others to be very flat and muddy and need a lot more work in Lightroom than the m10… but that’s just my take

    • @RadsbyCo
      @RadsbyCo  6 месяцев назад

      I know a lot of people who feel the same. The m10 is more modern in it's rendering. Makes a ton of sense for a lot of photographers. M240 fits my style perfectly. That said, the M10 files are absolutely lovely to work with! 🙂

    i don`t unterstand one point, why buy leica cameras and not use leica lenses? the lens is the leica pic, analogue and digital...for me ;-) my opinion....must not be the truth.. ;-)

    • @johnchuttlesworth6419
      @johnchuttlesworth6419 10 месяцев назад +6

      its true, i dont understand it either. leica lenses are by far the best, their digital m cameras are okay if one enjoys the rangefinder 'experience'. but i could cope with just a sony or fuji as long as i get to use my leica lenses and none other.

      And I don't understand the point of asking this questions. Photography is not just about the end result it's also about the experience. In the end it's always about the experience and a good story. If people are happy with a M-Body and a voigtländer lense then thats wonderful. I guess people ask this question because they goal is to feel more superior.

    • @Blackmind0
      @Blackmind0 9 месяцев назад

      @@lydiajoann2306 Leica is something special. People buy and use Leica because of the quality and also because of the name. Leica is expensive and many famous photographers have used or still use Leica. Leica has an aura of something special and yes, even posers who can afford Leica buy one. But the often mentioned Leica look comes from the lenses, digital and analogue. Leica lenses are something special and if you also photograph analog, then the result comes exclusively from the lenses. While in my digital photos taken with a Sony, the lens is from Sigma, I use Leica lenses (bought used many years ago when Leica was not yet so expensive and hyped) with my analog Konica RF (this cam is like an m6), because the lenses are something special and the pictures have a certain look in connection with certain films. And nobody pays attention to the lens in the city when I'm doing street photography. But everyone immediately looks at the camera body if it were a Leica! Why a simple question would make me feel better is completely out of thin air and absolutely illogical and thoughtless. The end result and the shooting experience are completely different issues. greets BM
