Leica M240 | Why I prefer it over M10

I have the M240, love it! Now looking to buy the Summilux 50 Ver 2 E43 to match it.
Great choice! I got the v3/type 3 I believe. The super light one without the tab. Beautiful lens!
Love your style <3
Thank you! That means a ton to me 🙏
Awesome 1st video. You gained a subscriber!
Thank you so much 🙏
Sharing the same sentiments. I found more enjoyment in photography again when I started adapting vintage lenses. Manual focus is more than a technique, it's an artform. It gives control back to the photographer. In my case it may not be switching entirely but I am looking at the Leica-Q as my second cam for EDC.
I can definitely recommend Leica Q. Just recently got the Q2, build quality feels better but I do overall like the images out of the Q original more. It's not bad, but the original Q sensor has something to it that I really like.
@@RadsbyCo Making a trip to Japan next winter and I'm hoping to avail of japan's duty free on a Q3. I value being able to crop in post and the built in feature to do that is really appealing. I also come from Canon which doesn't have a centered tilt screen like other brands. I've been shooting from the hip way more often in street which is another plus for the Q3. I heard the astro performance is better as well so I'm looking forward to trying that out if I can get my hands on one.
Bokeh is overated. I like 5.6 especially if close to subject. Dont like out of focus ears or noses.
Thanks for the video! I love to laugh at the amount of hate that comes Leica owner's way. I grew up shooting film and have unfortunately had to stop last year due to the insane price rises! Since then I've been looking for a setup that is like shooting film - unfortunately there is no brand that comes even remotely close to Leica in this regard. I can't even tell you how disappointed in Nikon I am that they just threw their f mount onto the scrap heap! Can you imagine if Leica just discontinued the m-mount?! So I dipped into Leica with the m-262 and a Voigtländer 35 f2 and a rehoused Contax 45mm f2. Absolutely no bells and whistles - not even live view! I bloody love it - it's as close to shooting my Nikon fm2n as I can find in a digital camera. Let each person find their own way into photography - some of us want a stripped back experience, and unfortunately for our wallets, the only brand currently offering anything like that id Leica. Thanks
Couldn't say it better myself my friend! Well done! That Leica is a beautiful camera!
Your photos are beautiful - one on your Instagram of the guy in a leather jacket sitting on the side of the street is amazing. In general, your color grading is wonderful. You have a defined color palette that consistently tells your stories. Would love to see how you make your selects and process your images.
Thank you so much! That could potentially be a video in the future for sure 🙂
Do you think it’s possible to shoot a whole wedding only using a Leica Q2? Actually I‘m thinking about selling all my gear (Sony a7 III, some GM lenses and my X100V) to buy one. But I‘m unsure if I make a mistake with the decision.
100% possible. Greg Williams shoot weddings with Q cameras and one of my favorites Teri Bocko have shot weddings with it too. www.teribphotography.com/2022/04/01/leica-q2-wedding-photography/ That said. It works well for 24-35mm style of photography. If you are used to 50mm 1.4 or 85mm then it wont hold up to your expectations looks wise. But I could shoot weddings with it no problems!
People’s opinions are subjective but for me, I’m the total opposite. I disliked the weight and the rendering of the m240… the M10 is lighter and the rendering and default colors are closer to the m9 although not the same . I found the m240 files , like others to be very flat and muddy and need a lot more work in Lightroom than the m10… but that’s just my take
I know a lot of people who feel the same. The m10 is more modern in it's rendering. Makes a ton of sense for a lot of photographers. M240 fits my style perfectly. That said, the M10 files are absolutely lovely to work with! 🙂
Had the Summicron 35 Asph (11879) for a long time...I must say do not miss it, the bokeh looks just too harsh to me.
I personally think the older summicrons render nicer and they are definitely more busy than luxes. I'd shoot a steel rim summilux if I could haha. Thanks for commenting!
I started with MP240 with Voigtländer 35mm 1.4 ii( which is very good lens) then M10R ( I love M10R but sometimes I miss the IQ from M240, so I keep both) later on get M6. After backpacking trip with my friend I kinda miss auto focus and also close focusing because sometimes I kind lazy to manual focus all the time so I get OG Q1 (I had X100 V but I feel I like DOF from full frame more), love the IQ, file size is perfect but the only thing as you mention that It has no weather sealing. My next backpacking trip I might bring only my M6 and Q and the rest just enjoy the moments.
Seems like you have it figured out haha! Pairing the m6 with the Q is a great idea. Covers everything for sure! 🙂
Love me some Leica! It made my Sony a7iv and Gmaster glass start collecting dust too. Leica is just so enjoyable and satisfying to shoot.
Ben's gonna wanna flip his Photo/Video camera set-up.
Based on what? Auto focus has to be way better for video on SL3 vs SL2-S?
SL3 is plenty for what I do
@@RadsbyCoit’s marginally better in video. And if you’re adding motion the rolling shutter is some of the worst ive seen. I have the SL2S and SL3 as well. And the SL2S is the better video camera, and the SL3 is probably the best image I’ve personally seen in a stills camera.
@caffeinatedcameras Interesting to hear your insights for sure! I personally haven't tried the new SL3 myself yet. I definitely will soon though! I am curious about how they compare 🙂
@@RadsbyCoit’s the better camera in nearly every way. I personally think it’s a step backwards in build quality, not by much but it’s not as solid as the SL2/S. If the AF was at the point of the S5II, not even the Canons or Sony’s the SL3 absolutely killer. But the AF performance right now is its real hindrance. There are others when you’re trying to make it a hybrid but the big one is the AF (specifically continuous)
Hi from Japan, I like your video style. Interesting why you sold your SL2-s. I made my Leica debut with Leica Dlux7, then Leica Q2, then sold them. Yesterday I bought the M 240. The last two cameras were so great and I loved them, but I wanted a rangefinder, which is Leica's real signature. And I wanted to shoot video as well. Hope you enjoy your Q2! This is a video I shot of the Q2 👇 ruclips.net/video/LYXhz0ouBXs/видео.htmlsi=zu5rIiHm7SwQCJwp
Oh damn! The Leica Q2 looks pretty good with video actually! Thank you! Good pick with the M240. It's my favorite camera! 🙂
Thanks for sharing your honest thought about the SL2 👍😊 Some SL3 reviews say / show that the AF improved compared to the SL2, but still not on the same level like Sony, Canon etc. Therefore I would also prefer the LUMIX S5 II, simply because the price is currently unbeatable and the AF is good enough. Looking forward to your Q2 review, but would love to see your Q2 first impression perhaps after a few weeks / one month. So I don’t have to wait 6 months 😀 And always amaze how great you color grade the Osmo footage 🙃 Keep up the great work my friend :)
Thanks you friend! It means a ton that you write me comments 🙂 haha yes first impressions might be a thing. Though it would either be super short or just be a full review without the experience using it. I am already biased because I love the original Q a ton 😝
Great video Alex! I fell in the bokeh rabbit hole when I started shooting seriously around 2020. Luckily Leica got me out of it quick and I don’t mind shooting at f8 and actually prefer it with the right conditions. Thanks again for sharing.
Thank you for commenting man!
I made the jump recently, after 40 years of hesitation ;) I bought a used M240 in 2024 which a 2013 camera ... Like you perfectly said: 1 - It is about taking pictures by yourself not relying on an amazing computer to do it for you (personal choice of course) 2 - It is the joy (or the pain) or either doing a great photo or missing the shot, whatever happens, it is it s on you not on the camera. I started 40 years ago with a Nikon FM2 and I was able to do Ski, Trampoline, tennis action photo with manual focus and exposure (zone focusing and proper aperture) It was pure joy. Now with a recent phone you can do truly amazing pictures with just pointing and shooting and this is cool !! really cool, just a different experience. It is also cool to be in control, taking the same pictures but having to sweat a bit for that ;) Well I do love my camera, and I totally understand people that do not want to walk that path for whatever reasons which are theirs ! Just please do not be judgmental with us, as we are not with you ;) Nice photo experience to everyone
Over time, the more I shoot, the less I cared to use lenses wide open. The summicrons are fantastic lenses.
100%. I love them a ton. My friend got a 50 cron and it seems pretty amazing too
Of all the Leica M lenses I own, the 35mm cron asph is just a gem that I keep on all the time.
I'm seriously thinking that maybe 35mm is it for me. It's the only focal length I really enjoy now 😅
Nice Video! I love my M240 too, got mine in silver last december in nearly new condition. The only thing that i like more is the black chrome version of the M10, looks sooo cooool!
The silver one is one of my favorites. I really want one. Can't justify it though haha.
@@RadsbyCo 🥹🤪 Btw nice photos 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
the lcd is fine...
Absolutely. Definitely good enough!
Great video and awesome message man! Although I'm only a hobbyist I also dived into that blury bokeh rabbit whole and now converting back shooting f2 or higher to get more context. If my schedule and children allow it I practise that on the street and try to get better. That being said I couldn't resist buying a used 50mm Lux v5 although I already have the 50mm Cron ... But for 1900€ mint condition I couldn't resist :D Btw your color grading is amazing on the Osmo Pocket 3! Do you manually grade the log footage? Keep up the awesome work! Will also check your IG on the weekend :)
Hey man! Can't blame you for the 50 lux. Dream lens of many people! Including myself haha. I do own it though, i think its the v5, Pre-ASPH without the tab. Also weighs less than other 50 luxes. I do grade the Osmo footage (d-log) myself with my own LUTS. Coverted from my own Lightroom presets. 🙂
Oh man these shots were great! New sub! 🤝🔥
Thank you 🙏
Awesome video!
Thank you man!
The super shallow dof thing for wedding photography has got to be because of how many folks with their first dslr and kit zoom try to photograph weddings right? Like it's an easy way to atand out from those folks. Cameras do so much of the work of exposing and focusing that it probably makes it hard to differentiate yourself especially when they all seem to use the same Lightroom presets
I own the current summilux, but for my shootings I mostly shoot between f2 and f4
Makes total sense! How do you like the summilux? 🙂
It‘s a great lens, but a bit to heavy
Look after that Cron V4, it’s quite fragile. Mine is currently awaiting repair for a loose focus tab after being serviced a couple of years ago for wobbly helicoid. FYI a cheeper option is the 40mm Summicron which has a very similar look to this lens if you can get past the narrower focal length - it is built better too.
I have seen the 40mm floating around, will definitely keep an eye out! Thank you for the heads up about the cron v4, is it the same problem for both the German and the Canadian versions of the lens?
Subbed! Awesome video
Haha thank you so much man! 🙏
@@RadsbyCo by the way I'm on a trip and I brought the new 35mm f1.5 lose focus 0.5m Really nice lens as well. I need to check that cron.
Great video brother! Forget the M2, I need that 35mm 😂 Just kidding. I enjoy as well showing more of the environment when I am shooting portraits. I completely burry background works sometimes but is more interesting so see the location and compose accordingly ❤
Haha M240 is gooood brother! Agreed, that why I love your work man!
Beautiful work! For me it depends on what I'm shooting. Studio portraits I use a faster aperture. Out and about I change it up frequently. I may even shoot the same subject wide open and closed down. Over the last 45 years of shooting my style has changed so many times. I just go with my heart. No longer worried about clients or views. I shoot for me. Started shooting Leica over two years ago, Q2 and M6. Love my Voigtlander 35mm f1.4 and my 50mm f1.5. So far I'm happy with the full range of f-stops!
Thank you so much! Gotta love the Voigtländer lenses, so good for the price it's ridiculous. The Voigtländer lives on my M2 now for sure.
My friends think I'm strange for choosing my MP240 & M5 over the M10p & M6/MP film cameras I used to own. I just prefer the battery life on the 240 & the M10 freezes or fails to start. And the 240 and M5 have more substantial grip/stability for my hand. I also dumped my Q2 to go back to the Q. Better low light, color science, smaller files & cheaper batteries. Cheers!
I agree with everything you wrote here haha. I also prefer the original Q as well!
you also pay for decent paid workers at Leica in EU if that matters to you of course 🙂
Yes of course! It's definitely an aspect people forget to talk about 🙂
Yep, agree completely. Took identical path myself, and quite recently. IMO, this specific era of Leicas is the perfect moment where they had one foot in the past and one in the future. I still haven't put my Q116 up for sale because of that sensor/lens combo. The color is just perfect... But i do use the M240 95% of the time now. I dont know what would make me upgrade, honestly. These dusty old babies are just too good.
100% agreed. M240 is so nice! I miss my Q too and you are not helping haha 😂
Start form 1 go from leica m1
It would make sense if Leica was logical like that. But M3 is the first M. Then M2, then M1 then M4 I think? 😅
Definitely have that gnawing feeling. I shoot film on an M3 double stroke and sadly inhad to stop using it due to the viewfinder prism separating. I shoot on a fuji x-pro 3 for a few years now, but im considering getting the leica m 240
I would go for the M240 over X-Pro any day. That said X-Pro is a beautiful camera still. Fujis are wonderful.
I think the X-Pro to Leica M pipeline is super common haha, I actually just sold my x-pro 3 and bought a 240, hasn't arrived yet but I already love shooting with my M4 so I expect that I'll love it
for those of you thinking about buying a m240: my Canon R3 is collecting dust in a cabinet ever since I got the M240... that tells you everything you need to know.
All good and well and I agree but you forgot to warn people that buying and using a Leica is more addictive than meth, c an h, together. 😮
100%. I currently own 4 leica cameras and lenses now. Went downhill real fast haha. That said. I've never been happier with my gear. It's a good thing for me 🙂
Let me tell you something crazy. I BELIEVE YOU 😊🎉
Aww that's super nice haha. Thank you 🙂
The autofocus, auto ISO, and so on were killing the joy of photography for me, last year I had 2 big photoshoots back to back and after that, I couldn't even touch my Canon R anymore or even have the mood for street photography, all I felt was just like mindless robot hitting the shutter button and that's its, the job is done. Switching to M10R makes me love photography again and I want to go out, shoot more, learn more, and most importantly, take it slow. No more point-and-shoot for me.
Same feeling I had for surea! Happy to hear about your experience! Thanks for sharing! 🙂
A long video that is basically the absolute standard for Leica owners; unproven excuses why they spent a huge amount of money for a set up that is worse in almost every way (battery life, focusing, speed, controls, screen, etc.) when the truth is that they just wanted something because it is shiny and expensive #leicamarketing
Nothing wrong with loving specs, speed and autofocus brother! We are all in this journey together in on form or another. I like shitty old things so it works well for me! Thank you for commenting, I really appreciate it! 🙂
I don’t need blazing fast autofocus because I prefer using manual focus anyway. I don’t need unlimited battery life when the M11’s battery lasts basically all day. Canon and Sony etc are great for on a commercial job but they’re also easily rented out for said job. They also lose a lot of resale value whereas the M10-Monochrom got me my exact money back when I sold it. The Leica M is perfect for me as a personal camera because it only has what is necessary to take a photograph, feels beautiful in the hand, and has a small form factor without sacrificing quality. Zero “unproven excuses” from someone who shoots commercially and has used cameras from most of the big brands. The R5 is a great tool, but it just isn’t something I’d want to carry around all the time. After using the M for a period of time it’s very difficult to go back to a specs focused camera.
i used to hold the same position. i genuinely hated leica because i thought it was a toy for rich idiots. i am very competence with adobe lightroom classic and i can assure you leica photos are more malleable and the colors really are just "better"
Back in the film days I lusted after a Leica M but couldn’t afford one. A few years ago, tired of confusing menus and having to choose what lens to use, I bought a Q2. Fantastic camera and the 47 Mp means you can crop to simulate much longer focal length lenses. I still have it but got frustrated at its size, which meant it was hard to slip into a non-camera bag or coat pocket. An inheritance meant I had the opportunity to get a M11. I’m glad I did but I’d say that most of my best pictures are taken on the Q2. Overall, I’d recommend a Q as a starter Leica.
Q is often the gate way into the Leica system. Incredible camera 🙂
Great video. Thanks for sharing. While I'm definitely no expert here, and I'm right on the edge of jumping into the Leica world myself, all your advice sounds reasonable, and more importantly, it comes from your past experiences. I often see people recommending cameras like they're the best thing in the world, but their next video is how they sold it because it wasn't for them. While that can obviously happen, I much prefer the more considered takes like this, and I'm looking forward to what you share next.
Thank you that means a lot. I will only talk about gear if it's gear that I've actively used for a longer time so I can give proper advice on it. I never understand gear reviews where they test out something for a day or two and then push a review of it. It's dumb. We spent waay too much money on gear without knowing if it works for us or not. I always want to speak from a place of experience and show real-world shots as well!
I have been shooting with Leica cameras for a long time. Zone focus is super fast after you learn it. Like all equipment, it takes time to learn them. You are also paying for hand made in Germany. Tour the factory and you will see the care and precision that goes into them. They are absolutely worth the money. I make prints up to 40"x60" and nothing compares
Nothing compares? So you've shot every digital and film camera and printed to the same size and compared in person, and then decided that the Leica is still the best? 🙄
@@alhOOO2O My first camera I bought for my self was the Sinar F2 with Rodenstock lenses. Film is a different look than digital.. I still have my Rollieflex,Hassleblad 501C, I/A, IIIF,M3, M4, M6,R8 as far as film cameras. I no longer have my Sinar cameras, Fuji GX680, my Mamiya 645 or RZ. I have shot sony, fuji, aps and the 50 and 100. I have shot the Phase on the ALPA system. The phase on the ALPA is a beautiful set up. I do not really do landscape work so was not for me. I cannot decide if I want ALPA TC no rise fall or the STC which has a little rise and fall. They are works of art. You can shoot with film as you can put film bask on them. the Hassleblad X1 and X2D cameras. The X2d is a huge improvement over the 1 for sure. The Hassleblad has the best color science in digital. The Sony was the least comfortable in my hands and the menu system was awful. I have made prints for my friends that use Canon. I did not like the feel of the Canon when I tried it out. The Nikon felt good in the hands, however in my testing the lenses fell off at the corners wide open. You have to find the system that works for how you create and print. My standard print size is 24'x36". I also have a limited series of work that I print at 40"x60". M,R, S and SL glass. They all work on my SL cameras and the M glass work on all my film and digital M cameras as well as the SL cameras. I have worked with multiple cameras and systems over the years and the Leica just works for me and I can print them at any size no problem. Most of the cameras very few people are actually going to try or compare. Most are looking at Sony, Canon, Nikon or Fuji and based on these cameras they do not have the build quality of the Leica's. Like everything this is my opinion and everyone can have their own. Buy what you want and I will create my images with the cameras that work best for me.
Wow, I really appreciate and relate to the journey you described. I've always been looking for more. Naturally, looking at Leica after having a great run with Sony. Always fun to challenge yourself with new and different gear.
Couldn't agree more! 🙂
Say someone had the exact same illogical urge to sell his gear as well for an M240, what first lens would you get?
Depends on what you like to shoot. Voigtländers are always safe bet in my opinion, their performance to price ratio is just ridiculous. I've shot Voigtländers for years and would happily use any of their lenses. Voigtländer 35mm 1.4 or 40mm 1.4 are great picks. Leica Summicron 35mm v3, v4 or ASPH are amazing picks if you can afford it. Voigtländer 50mm 1.5 is a great pick too. That said. The Leica 50mm Summicron and Summilux are just incredible to me. I just recentely bought Leica lenses for the first time so I might be a bit biased but I have done real photo shoots with all of these and they are all incredible.
@@RadsbyCo thanks so much!
Gonna throw a shout in for the Zeiss Biogon 35mm f/2.8, don't let the aperture put you off, it's one of the nicest rendering lenses I've ever used, look up "Pushing Film"' 's review of it
of course it's worth it!
I've got an M240 and an M11. Saw no reason to upgrade until the M11. The M240 has a special look when underexposed and it's why it has stayed with me since it launched.
It's nice to hear all the love everyone has for the M240 🙂
This is a great channel. I have the M262, which i believe has the same sensor as the 240. I had the Q2 but sold it. The 262 has a magical look that i can't put my finger on, a kind of luminous glow like you get in the skies in spring. The colours are nicer than the Q2, which I find colder. I have a Voigtlander Heliar 40mm and an ancient 90mm Elmar f4 with the camera. I have a workhorse Fuji system, but the 262 is so much more fun. Love your style of delivery. Keep 'em coming!
Thank you. I just want to talk to people like I'm talking to my friends. No big youtubery thing like everyone does haha.
Hasselblad all day long for me.
Never tried it. I really should though. Swedish company, would make total sense being Swedish and all. How do you like it?
Love the design and the simple menu layout. IQ and colors. I also prefer the native 4:3 format over 3:2.
Using a Leica is not just about producing great photos but also enjoying the experience of shooting.
Couldn't agree more friend!
