  • Western Cult Series from 1964 starring Michael Landon: Bonanza - Episode 170 - The Hostage - Ben is taken hostage by a gang of four outlaws, who are hoping for a $100,000 ransom from the Cartwrights for his safe return.
    The Hostage
    Director: Don McDougall
    Writer: Donn Mullally
Stars: Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker
    Genre: Western
    Country: USA
    Language: English
Release Date: 27 September 1964 USA
Filming Locations: Kern River, California, USA
    Storyline:
"Ben is taken hostage by a gang of four outlaws, who are hoping for a $100,000 ransom from the Cartwrights for his safe return. As his sons formulate a plan to rescue their father, Ben devises one of his own after he senses dissension amongst his captors." Written by Brian Rathje on IMDb.com
    Reviews:
"This Bonanza story finds Ben Cartwright the victim of a kidnapping leaving the sons to raise the ransom money for him. The leader of the outlaws is Harold J. Stone and in either an urban or rural setting Stone is usually one merciless villain. That he's the brains of the outfit is no question.
Why he insists on bringing Jacqueline Scott along I don't know. Surely Jesse James never felt the need to bring Zerelda along when he was on a job. But he does and his gang does not contain some of the brightest creatures on God's earth. But certainly some of the horniest.
Lorne Greene working a little psychological warfare does this rest. It's some of his best moments in the history of the series.
Worth watching for Greene's scenes with the outlaws individually and collectively." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com
"As much as Chad Stone was "in charge of this outfit", he did two honorable acts - he spared Ben's life when he did not have to, and he tried to see to it that his lovely wife Willa is taken care of.
One truly unfortunate goof - after Ben is "reclaimed" for the ransom, the boys ride back to the mine. As Little Joe (ever the show off, often annoying) swings his right leg over the horse's head, Joe makes a mistake and kicks the horse's head with his boot. Ouch! I am surprised that they did not cut the scene." Written by Thomas001 on IMDb.com

The difference with watching Bonanza now and back in the 60’s is NO commercials. The commercials back then were a lot different but still took time away from the storyline.

The very interesting character trait of staying calm in the face of adversity always seems to draw out the best humane-ness in all of us. This is an outstanding character Ben, always plays, and he instilled this in Adam, a little in Hoss, and a little in LItte Joe, and he always reals them in to do the right thing, no matter what. Great lessons to make as personal, and own them.

🇺🇸 I have always admired and loved the Texas Rangers because I grew up watching the Lone Ranger and Tonto and I still listen to the old-time radio shows. And there are few videos of the tv show The Texas Rangers on You Tube. I 💕

    • @lynettepalecek3141
      @lynettepalecek3141 Год назад +1

I have some original episodes of "The Lone Ranger" including the very first pilot episode that explains the actual name of "The Lone Ranger" and the fact that Tonto is the one that came up with the name "The Lone Ranger." Glenn Strange played the diabolically evil criminal who tricked a group of Texas Rangers into an ambush. The way that he did that was by having a plant in among the Rangers that they trusted lead them into the ambush. As that man led the Rangers to the ambush, he waved to Glenn's character. Glenn's character had his men shoot all of the Rangers. Then, he told the planted man to leave. As he was leaving, Glenn's character shot him in the back and killed him. There was only one Ranger that survived- barely. He crawled to a stream and passed out. Tonto found him and nursed him back to health. When the Ranger was better, he had Tonto place a grave for each Ranger including himself. Tonto told the Ranger that he paid him back for when the Ranger saved his life when he was a lad. Tonto's family were murdered then. The Ranger had Tonto make a mask out of the Ranger's brother's belongings. The Ranger decided that he wanted to avenge for all of the Rangers that were murdered. Tonto decided to join him. Then, Tonto called the Lone Ranger "Kimosaby" which has something to do with "My faithful friend." I don't know how to spell "Kimosaby." Maybe you do. The traitor that Glenn's character shot in the back survived that wound. He went after the Lone Ranger and Tonto. Eventually, the Lone Ranger shot him and the traitor fell off the mountain to his death. Tonto also gave the Lone Ranger the idea to call the Lone Ranger's horse Silver when he said that the horse was white like the silver in the sky or something like that because the horse was pure white. I think that Tonto's horse was named Scout. The Lone Ranger's name when he was a Ranger was John Reid. Of course, he used silver bullets to shoot with, without the intention of killing the bad guys. It was a fun show to watch. It was broadcast from 1949-1957. I have a set of 17 shows on 2 dvds. I even have the biographies of Clayton Moore as the Lone Ranger and Jay Silverheels as Tonto.

At 45:34, why not take Chad's horse since they're short a mount?

36:55 In case anyone was watching, I expected him to tell Ben that he was going to shoot right and he needed to bow over and tumble down behind the rock and then stay out of sight. I always hate when a team rides up side by side, easy to all be picked off if someone stayed behind to eliminate them. But they like the group shots too much. Cheaper & faster too. Huh? Why would they go back to the mine? It's time to move out! Plus, so many of their tracks lead there... They should divide the money and each hide their portion in a different place. None of it at the mine. 46:00 Why is Joe taking cover in front of the rock?! :D I was disappointed that the tough woman wasn't fighting. They wanted to end it with her as a victim even thought she was no victim. But they had to do that to end the love story.

Why take Ben's gun belt, it is a plain leather belt...they do not carry but 6 shells in their gun. If more than 6 bullets is needed, well, they die.
