I don’t know why people think your ability to physically keep up with the violin doesn’t fade as you become of old age. Mr. Mintz doesn’t need to prove anything to us. He’s made his mark and we should respect him.
Because these people are stupids, this kind of people will be able to critic Usain Bolt when he'll have 80 because he can't run as faster when he was 20. No-sense. Shlomo was great and he's still great!
The young Shlomo Mintz was a marvel of technical skill and a gifted musician. It is very sad indeed to see and hear what has become of him. He is dragging, the bow arm is a mess, contact with the string suggests way too much pressure, and as a result the tone production is uneven. And then there is the question of the music: where is it? What happened to Saint-Saens' dancing, sprightly score; instead of "gratioso" and "sprezzatura" we get a plodding, note-by-note account. What a mess!
People buy tickets to see the musician they adore play, regardless of how many mistakes the musician make due to old age. If Mr. Heifetz would still be alive today, I don’t mind listening to his playing even with a handful of mistakes due to age. It’s the ethereal experience of witnessing your idol. When Isaac Stern played a Kreisler piece in 1999, people especially the young kids were in awe just to witness their model. It’s not about how well you do anymore. It’s about being there for those who look up to you.
The Saint-Saens Rondo is now on youtube with the Cologne Radio Orchestra from the beginning of his career. But that he lost his capabilities from that time is already a long time ago.
You can hear that physically his body might be tired, but his tone is still very distinct and the difficult passages particularly those of the end are brilliant. He is one of the few violinists that have a signature sound, you can hear his uniqueness right away, you can recognize him almost as quickly as you can recognize Heifetz. I’m not saying that he performance was perfect, but not many violinists or instrumentalists have this much personality and so much of a personal imprint! In their sound!
I liked the young Shlomo Mintz too, but his playing has worsened. For example, I cannot understand why he needs to literally attack almost every note by biting the string… in this concert performance of the Rondo Capriccioso, there are also some wrong notes and dynamics/rhythms mistakes creeping in, the notes very often don’t sound pure right from the beginning (left hand or bow hand issue, who knows ?). It’s utterly disappointing.

The orchestra is really bad..
He should stay in Slomo Mintz instead of hurting his instrument, the violin is not singing anymore....
