When my sister was a teenager she was supposed to go to a party with some friends. She wasn't in the mood so she stayed home instead. That night her three friends she was supposed to go with went for a drive with some guy that one of the girls had a crush on. Turned out he was drunk and slammed the car into a tree. Two of them weren't wearing seatbelts and died instantly. The third girl was wearing hers so she just had a mild concussion but the car had flipped over and the only way she could get out was by climbing over her friend's dead body. She of course got severe PTSD from it and had to go through all the details multiple times at the trial against the guy who had also lived. My sister was a mess for months, both at the horrific loss of her friends but also with guilt because she kept wondering if she had been there would she have talked them out of going or just gone with them.

Back in high school there was a party that was gonna be like the ones you see in the movies. Rich kids parents were out of town and he has a cousin with a fake ID. Kegs, liquor, weed, the works. Nearly everyone in the whole school was invited. My best friend and I were all set to go. We had everything we needed and his mom drove us. As we were getting closer I started getting very anxious and talked my friend into just going back to his house. His mom was a little frustrated as it was a long drive but at least she wasn’t gonna have to make a second trip to retrieve us. We realized going to a party was dumb since we could already drink and whatnot at his house and no risk of getting busted. Got into school the following Monday and found out the party got busted. About half of the school was suspended and got MIP charges. We later found out it was one of the few kids that was not invited. She got pissed and called it in. She wasn’t very popular before and this basically killed what little social standing she had,

In 7th grade, I signed up to go on the school Disney world trip and asked my mom to sign the slip. However, my mom didn’t let me go, as she said that it was a waste of money to go on a school trip, and that it was better to go on our own. However, that would mean I couldn’t go with my friends. I got extremely mad at her and barely talked to her for a couple of days. I think I hurt her feelings a bit. 2 days after the trip was over, on the following Monday when we all returned to school, I found out that a rainstorm passed through during the trip for 2 hours and the park was shut down during that time. Although people claimed they still had fun, they didn’t ride that many rides. 2 weeks after the trip, my family went on our own trip to Disney world. Perfect weather. No regrets. I guess mom was right after all.

    • @PrincessofPower84
      @PrincessofPower84 3 года назад +12

@@mart10the2nd It happened in 1982 on the set of the Twilight Zone movie. Actor Vic Morrow and two child actors were on the set of filming a scene where Morrow's character was to rescue the two children.
Unfortunately, there were *plenty* of illegal and dangerous activities going on at the time, namely with there being a real live helicopter on set and the two children working at night in spite of the child labor laws that were in place that were supposed to bar them from doing that.
Director John Landis was filming the scene and insisted on more explosions and the helicopter to fly lower. Tragically, an explosion went off that ended up blinding the pilot's vision and causing him to crash onto all three actors, killing them instantly.
It's one of the most, if not *the* most horrifying on-set accidents in Hollywood history and set off a whole new precedent towards safety and accountability for production studios.

When people heard the music start they naturally started moving to the doors, and poor crowd direction in too small of a space ended up in a slow unrelenting crush that people couldn't escape from, and the people who did get out and went to get help were ignored by apathetic police nearby.
The "rabid fans" thing came from mainstream media at the time writing the victims off as Delinquent Youths before all the details had come to light, and unfortunately by the time they had the main narrative of the tragedy was set as rabid teenagers in a rush instead of the horrific slow ribcage crushing and suffocation it actually was.

Turns out the dirt path became very muddy and slippery from yesterday's storm and a lot of people slipped and fell. No major injuries, but nearly everyone had to finish the trek with mud all over their clothes. Dad pulled me to the side and said that I was right.

My friend talked me out of it last minute. So we opted to go clubbing instead. The party was busted because one of the lease owners let his visa expire. The immigration police arrived to find a party with bags of weed and everybody stoned. 12 foreign students were expelled and deported. Glad I was talked out of that party

I remeber something like this happening to me. Sometime perhaps 2011, I was supposed to get on the LIRR from LI to NYC...because I honestly had nothing better to do that day. I was scheduled to go around 9am yet for some reason I dragged my feet and missed my original stop for an hour. Then had to wait another hour after arriving just to find out the train I was supposed to get on had crashed and there were many badly injured and I think a few deaths. But I felt ALMOST as lucky as those who missed out of 9/11. Wound up forgetting why I went to NYC in the first place after that.

My paternal grandfather served during WWII. He was a Catholic from a country where that's a religious minority, as in parts-per-million rather than percentage, and the fact that he was an educated man made his superiors wary of him. On top of that, he was also of Italian descent, and Italy was still an Axis power at the time. He didn't find out until years later that he had someone following him to make sure he wasn't a spy. At some point during his service, he was taking time off and strolling around a city. Since it was Sunday, he got it into his head that he might want to head into church, more so to see some pretty girls than actually worship. Wouldn't you know it, the only church in town was in an Italian embassy. After giving it some thought, he decided to continue his stroll instead. Had he gone into that embassy, the guy following him would have been obligated to report him as an Axis spy.
If it weren't for my grandfather being a bad Catholic, I wouldn't exist.

In 2011, I was at basic training and that particular day one of the soldiers had to stay on quarters due to some "pain". He was left alone in the barracks (on a 3rd floor). When we were back, we always had a challenge that the fastest we got back to the barracks the more time we had to rest before the next formation. Faithfully, when we got back that day I reached the stairwell door first and something (I felt as if time stopped and heard a voice) told me to hold the door open and not go in. The other soldiers were startled when their faces touched the legs of the soldier that stayed as he hung himself from the top floor veranda. Later I realized he was the soldier that sat next to me on class. I've always felt I could have done something.

My bullet dodged. I was a senior in high school. I went to the office to pay a late fee and get my yearbook. Well, I got a bad feeling and stayed away from the office. Ten minutes later, we were ordered into lockdown. Turns out there was a hostage situation across the street and the guy responsible was hiding in the office. It took the cops several hours to finally nail the guy because he kept moving and hiding in various locations. Those of us, myself included, hiding in the art building actually heard the guy run right by the classroom.
The way this guy ran, you’d think he was an elephant. I shudder to think what might have happened if I actually had gone into the office. I probably would have been held hostage.

I'm not sure if this counts as an "opt-out" story, but my maternal grandfather served in the Army in WWII, specifically in a unit that participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He left a typewritten record of his company's history and the events they went through, and one in particular stands out in my mind. One day, they were at base when they heard (and felt) a loud explosion. Figuring it would be best to wait before going to get their next meal, they didn't go to the mess hall until about 20 minutes later. When they got there, however, they found that it was the mess hall that had been shelled, and a cook and staff member were killed in the explosion. I often think about how I wouldn't be here had my grandfather been at the mess hall when the bombs fell.

Because of my poor health I’ve had to miss a lot of family get-togethers or vacations - one that has stung at the time was missing out on a trip to Savannah, Georgia, a place I’d always wanted to go to because I’m a bit of a ghost fanatic and love touring haunted places. But, I was in too much pain to go, and my mother left me behind with my dad while my mom, siblings, grandma, aunts, and cousins all went.
One of the places they’d be dying to go to was Paula Deen’s restaurant (this was before it came out about her racism, which as a black family is absolutely a dealbreaker), and the first day of the trip ended with a visit to the famous restaurant.
When I wake up the next morning, it’s to Dad shaking his head, where he proceeds to tell me that every single one of the trip-goers got some degree of food poisoning or gastrointestinal issue. So that’s like, ten people, across 4 hotel rooms, aka 4 bathrooms, children still in diapers, all of them sick as dogs and unable to leave the hotel to do anything else for their entire stay because they’re all trying to juggle the 4 available toilets between their various ailments. Any upset I’d felt about not being able to go vanished in an instant.

Mine isn't a dark one at all, but I had this intuitive gut ability that I used while playing four corners in class when it was too rainy to play outside. If I held both of my arms in an L shape, I could feel a weight in my arms, telling me which corner to go to. For example, if my left arm felt heavier, I would go to the corner in that direction. I never lost a single game of four corners. Recently I got curious and decided to test if it still worked. You know the glass bridge game from Squid Game? For those who don't know, there's a bridge with glass panels to get across. Some glass panels will break, others will hold your weight, and you have to try to guess the right ones all the way to the end or you fall to death. I decided to play a virtual simulation of this game, putting my gut ability to the test. Made it across without dying. Yup. Still got it. Tested it a lot since then with other luck based games, but I've discovered a downside to this ability. It varies each game, but sometimes the weight is telling me which way I SHOULD go and which way I SHOULDN'T. And sometimes it switches which one it is halfway through.

The guy not wanting to move and got severance and then the division was closed reminds me of a company I saw do that. I was contract in the IT dept so no part of this. But the company was moving a bunch of people to another town, closing other ares, consolidating things. Like the story, they were given a choice. Many moved only to find out the company was downsizing later and some who moved lost their jobs.
Same thing also happened to my brother, he quit and after the group moved their division was outsourced to an India call center, which last he heard failed and ended up costing the company money and contracts.

Not as life-saving as many other stories here, but I'll share.
So in my highschool there's a class called international arts(essentially a dance class which is mandatory throughout all programs...dunno why). We just finished practicing the exercise during class when the teacher announced that the exercise will be scored as a test, which we can come take the test anytime within the next 2 weeks. Since the class is in Thursday, most people in my class opted to come back later, but I didn't as I already nailed the exercise so I planned on taking the test right away. My friends almost left too but stayed as they see me, and we stuck around practicing the moves then finally taking the test. We all passed.
Fast forward to that Saturday. The school released an announcement of an emergency shut down(The nearby university had a covid outbreak) so...after that, the school shut down for the rest of 2 weeks that we're allowed.
The same kind of thing happened after the school reopens too, and this time my friends stuck around with me.
Me and my friends are some of the only people that didn't have to take a video of ourselves dancing, twice!

Not me, but my dad was in the Royal Air Force for around 12 years, and usually whenever a type of plane is being phased out, they do a commemorative flyby, that servicemembers can go on (this was a transport plane, can't remember the type.) He signs up to go on this flight, though at the last minute the unit he was with had some other work to do, so he couldn't go. The plane crashed, and everyone aboard sadly died, think it went down in central England. I'm pretty sure I'm remembering this correctly.

Speaking of over capacity elevators. My junior year of college, it was Halloween weekend and most students were going to costume parties. Well a block of dorms with about 12 stories each of identical building has a group going to the same party. Rather than wait for another elevator, they crowded into one and the elevator starting falling without any promoting. One guy was claustrophobic and started to climb out. The elevator kept falling, and despite people in the elevator pushing him up and people on the floor above pulling, he was cut in half. Now, I am always doing a mental calculation of weight in a crowded elevator and I always read the capacity load.
