The RCA Varacoustic Vs. RCA 77-DX

This week we'll be comparing the RCA Varacoustic side by side with the RCA 77-DX! These ribbon microphones share the same ribbon motors, however have different bodies, acoustic labyrinths, and transformers. As these microphones are often compared with each other with little info or samples, I hope this video can be a resource for comparing their differences! RCA made same of the highest quality engineered ribbon microphones back in the 1950's and 60's - these two microphones are prime examples. Almost always an AEA RPQ2!

Which polar pattern do you have the 77 in? They all sound pretty different on my 77s!

I almost always use the bi-directional setting! I’d rather use it and roll-off the bass if the proximity effect is too high
