Matt: "We need to send a rover, so we can *safely* recover the kerbals!" Also Matt: Proceeds to repeatedly roll rover, hoping nothing important explodes.
I suspect we might get a second KSP renaissance. Scott Manley, and the holy trinity of Marcus House, Mark Thrimm, and Matt Lowne, a smattering of others...
If 'Lunar Rover Driver' becomes a job title in the Artemis program missions, all rovers should be equipped with a heavy duty roll cage in case Matt somehow gets hired for the job.
"So we've got the usual suspects of pilots, scientists, and geologists, but for a laugh, we've given a British Optometrist the keys as well, mostly for a laugh, but mainly because we want to see how he'll ramble when all he's done for the past six months is relevant to the mission at hand"
I did notice that the video is extremely clear today before you mentioned it, but thought it was just my mind that's tricking me. Turns out it was not! Thank you so much for the upgrade, it looks so good on a full 4K video. Too bad you experienced so many trouble editing it, but I hope you could solve it ASAP. + Yes, 4K video gets much higher bitrate; so it will improve video quality on lower resolution monitors too. I generally watch videos at 1440p on my 720p phone, because that makes texts clear enough to be readable - at native resolution, I just can't read anything! It's a shame that the phone's processor is too weak to play a 4K video in real time, since that device won't be gaining any benefits from your upgrade.
4K looks incredibly crisp, even on my Full HD monitor. That said, I fully agree with "if VLC struggles playing a video file, it's probably not a video", that program is just mindblowing with how versatile it is
It has been a while since I have been this early to a Matt lowne video and it’s even better this time because it’s a blunderbirds video and even though I’ve not finished this video yet, it is amazing at every part and I’m pretty sure this video is in 4k at least for me but great job for another amazing video
I remember once my kerbal was stuck in high kerbin orbit, just below mün, but when I tried to rescue him, I realized(after many failed attempts) that in 3 orbits around kerbin, the stuck kerbal would get an encounter with the mün that would almost send it out of kerbins sphere of influence(details in the replys)
19:57 Fun fact: the original Apollo re-entry profile was meant to do such an atmospheric skip to reduce the speed first and hence make the final plunge safer. In practice all skips used were a lot more flat.
Matt, you can mess with the Wheels settings; its friction, its traction, and a couple of other sliders to get the wheel to grip the ground better, it still won't be perfect, but better. You can do this both while in the VAB/SPH and when your actually driving around in game. You will need to change like the Traction Control and Friction Control to Override, which will open up new sliders for you to change. You can also tweak the breaking force as well. Edit: I noticed that you used the Traction Control Slider at one point in the video, it has been my experience that the slider doesn't do that much, use the slider that you get when you click Override, it works much better.
I feel like Matt Lowne's videos are really cool because he has added some more lore to KSP. what happens to allow Kerbals to respawn...well, the Bluderbirds must have saved them!
For the scale issue, you can change the scale from settings: go to settings > System > Display > select your display > you will find a percentage menu under scale and layout. Change it to your liking
YAAAAY BLUNDERBIIIIRDS! 😄😄😄 It almost makes me wish I'd failed at rescuing Jeb from Laythe, but I am approaching the skill level where I can just make Kerbin to Laythe SSTOs (SSTLs?) when I feel like it, and the effort of rescuing Jeb got me significantly further toward that goal. Besides, successfully rescuing my own kerbal felt really good! :D I'm actually working on going back for his ship now; it just needs refuelling. I might have done that already if i hadn't chickened out on the first, larger rescue ship I built. Ultimately, I want to build a rescue SSTA, but any kind of SSTA is a difficult job, insanely so if you include Eve. So far, my favoured wing style produces great instability on Duna though it's all right on Kerbin and Laythe. Curious, eh? Rockets DO need to be heard! 😁 And yay! SLS! "I guess if you launch at night, you can see space more easily, right? it's easier to steer the rocket." 🤣👍🤣 Oh I thought it looked sharper than usual and generally better in a way I couldn't quite put my finger on. Even though I'm not watching at 4k, it looks really good. The improvement is clear! (Pun Police weeoow weeoow!) The edge of the atmosphere and the starfield together are particularly beautiful. It makes me angry how so many UI designers and programmers have refused to adapt to scalable UI. We had the technology in the 90s. The foundations were in place in the early 80s, it was just a little too slow back then. It's basically 2 or 3 decades of "No don't be stupid that's wrong/slow I know what I'm talking about," and "Wah wah scalable UI is hard." How does scaling down a video just fail? _On a lonely planet, spinning its way to damnation, amidst the incompetence and atavism of lesser software corporations..._ 🤣*sigh* I really wish I'd really put my mind to solving UI issues and persistently publicising solutions around the turn of the century, but we'd still have plenty of other issues to plague us. Computers! \o/ Nice landing. Rovers in Simple Rockets 2 also act like they're on ice. :/ But, in KSP, I've had good results from first attaching the wheels to long diagonal arms, making an X shape with the body of the rover in the center, and then turning wheel friction all the way up to 10. (You have to click the button to override friction first.) The reason for the long arms is because otherwise, the high friction would make the rover roll over when cornering or braking. To make it practical, you can hinge the arms so the rover fits into a fairing or Mk3 cargo bay. If this seems unrealistic, I think of it as compensating for the fact that we expect our rovers to go many times faster than real ones; they're basically Lamborghinis and Ferraris by comparison. :) Many real sportscars have been made with X-shaped chassis, notably TVRs. Matt Lowne is rallye ace! XD I think I might need to see this latest Fast and Furious film! XD Melted cables due to user error... I have no idea how I feel about this! Part of me wants to be all, "I give up I'm going back to 8-bit computers," but part of me is all, "Noooo, you'll never take shiny graphics away from me!" lol I guess I could install them right, on a good day, when I'm feeling calm but not too calm, and maybe the weather is just right. lol
With regard to steering rovers, I've always steered using the A-D-Q-E reaction wheel controls and only used I-K-B to control the speed. I always make sure to oversize reaction wheels on rovers too.
I've been dealing with 4K scaling issues since I upgraded too. There is a fix for older programs, you need to right click and go to properties, then Compatibility, then click Change High DPI settings, then tick the bottom box and choose system from the dropdown. If this still doesnt work I think you need to click the top box too. Apply and launch program it should scale correctly, works good with old win forms applications.
The sound of SLS was awesome true, I wish they just had named it Jupiter, or In-Line Shuttle Derived Launch Vehicle. Jupiter would've been a nice homage to the past designs, complimenting Saturn.
Hey Matt, Try adjusting your friction control on all your wheels. That should largely mitigate the sliding issue you're experiencing. My bad if this has already been posted, I perused but didn't see it mentioned.
So I got back into KSP after the KSP2 Early Access announcement, got all my usual mods etc. Holy Moly thank you for showing off the Lander Can rover variant, literally my new favorite part and I had no idea it was vanilla Also, thanks for showing off the new robotic parts. Fast and Furious sending a car to space WAS the bravest thing done this year. A car with a steering wheel in space, sure beats any social movement movies. Well said Matt
I think it's a good thing you figured out how to record in 4k with the release date of KSP 2 rapidly approaching. Those videos are going to be amazing when you release them.
It defaulted to 1080p. AFter you said 4k I swapped it mannually. Holy crap! it looks amazing in 4k! Also tech jesus said plug in the cable before installing the card. Then try to pull out the cable. If it doesn't come out, you're good.
Have you played Astro Colony, an early access game on steam, where you have to build a space station and mine planets? You might like it. Keep up the good work with the KSP videos', especially the blunderbirds!
Instead of building a bespoke spacecraft for each mission, you could design multiple spacecraft each fulfilling a different role. The challenge would be to find the fewest number of different spacecraft designs you would need to accomplish any reasonable rescue in the Kerbin system.
Wow that really is an upgrade! A 4090! I was wondering if your graphics card or storage speed might need to be upgraded for a 4k stream on Vegas, but looks like you are already on top of things. Congrats on the new setup! And I believe you can set display scaling on windows itself and it applies to all apps on your monitor, so that might help with small icons.
Hey man, I prefer them launching at night, since I live in Florida, I can just go outside and watch the launch and the dark sky makes the rocket easier to see from further away
