    My friend and I both have the lesser price Supercaliber. Folks who have not put time in the saddle of a SC cannot really have reasonable comments because this is new technology involving all of the bike characteristics throughout the ride. Our thoughts are just wow, how do they get that performance with 60 mm travel? It is a cross country race bike, not an all trail bike. It is the best xc bike I have ridden, by far. I will never have enough talent to exceed its capabilities.

      I can't say I am sold on it, I am looking more toward longer travel but still reasonably light like the new Scott. But I'd love to spend a week with it on XC trails that aren't super chunky to give it a try. I am sure if you're on trails within its intended riding envelope, the thing absolutely rips.

      How does this bike perform with jumps? I'm very interested in the SC. It seems to be the perfect bike for the trails i intend on riding most. However, i would like to be able to do a few jumps. The thin seat stays are worrisome for a 212 lbs body like myself.

      I agree, but at the same time what bike brand sells a high end spec xc race bike that doesn't cost a small fortune. I guess it's still that old saying you get what you pay for.

    Great review! I was curious if you thought this was a good rig for longer endurance-focused rides like Leadville 100? From what I understand, in these longer endurance races, it's good to have the efficiency of a hardtail, but your back could use a little bit of plushness, that's why I was considering this bike.

    Every now and again, I consider getting an XC bike to make easy trails a blast. This one looks great. Then I remember I’m over 6 ft and over 100kg, and rip a Norco Sight at the bike park most weekends. And that I have a reputation of breaking built-for-DH wheels. And so I will continue to not buy an XC bike, but thank you for your excellent review nonetheless, I thoroughly enjoyed it ☺️

      You remind me to be happy that I'm 5.5 feet tall and weigh 63 kilos. I never break bike parts and they last 10 years under my fairly low power output. Thanks for that!

      I’m 6ft 4 and weight around 115kg and use a hardtail trek 9.9 elite and never had any issues and I ride my bike hard… I’ve even taken it to local downhill trails with 0 issues, it makes you a better rider tbh because you learn to be smooth and have great technique.

    I bought the 9.7 in 2020, I'm now waiting for my 9.7 2023, although their the same model the 9.7 now is what the 9.8 would of been in 2020, so looking forward to the delivery of this work of art in all area's, had to sell my original 9.7 as I was unable to ride a bike for 18months as I had severed tendons and nerves in my right leg, so I lost my job and had to sell my bikes to get by and was unableto ride for a long while, lost a lot of movement in my leg and just general pain, but been really doing my best to nurse my leg back to strength back at about 80 percent, probably the best I'll ever get it so ready to replace my baby so looking forward to it!

    I've bought a Supercaliber last year and used for 8 months. First, I should say this bike climbs as promissed, but to descend, it is terrible, no control and not safe (due to 69o head tube). Also, I faced lot of issues with Trek components. This is fact my major complaint: rear tire is gone after 1.200 miles. The bike was delivered by a Trek store without proper spoke wheel adjustement, and one got broken when riding. Bontrager hubs are horrible as, in any contact with water, it damages the bearings (replaced them twice in 8 months!!, the two wheels),. The head tube also very susceptible to watter damage and intrusion. Painting is beautiful, but very fragile, don't touch anything that get damaged. The rear chain stain frame cracked after 2 months of use (replaced by Trek under warranty). So, I shold say I am not happy with Trek as a brand neither with Supercaliber.

    They DO include the volume spacers. I've purchased a Supercaliber a week ago. I haven't used it yet, still tunning things up.
    Maybe early iterations of the bike didn't include those?. I have the sealed bag with the two extra spacers. Nice review!.

    Great review! It’s a very interesting bike, I’m not really into xc as I prefer dh and enduro, but I am pretty into engineering and I love to understand how things work, so I was really curious to see how a different approach like this would work in reality. Great video!

    This just made my day - seeing a bike worth (well, at least selling for) 16 000 AUD having the exact fork (21 ULTIMATE SL) I bought new on the new year's eve (talk about timing) for EUR 540 on German ebay with the lock-out, w/o steerer tube shortened, w/o star nut (weight without the MAXLE thruaxle - 1309 g). WIll be using that on my old-ish RADON BLACK SIN hardtail carbon frame (same colour as the fork - blue) which I got used again on ebay for 317 EUR. The rest of the parts cost a fraction of these numbers quoted here - but I bet I will be getting 80% of the performance. That said - being 40 and above 185cm, having been riding for 25 or more years, some back issues give rise to the question - do I need a FS bike? If so, this would be very high on the list, if not top, and if so, buying a frame for cheap could prove problematic. Anyway. Thanks for the amazing high quality review - you've got yourself a new subscriber from Latvia.

    Man I’m a little late. But I have a 34 pound bike which I was going to switch to a marlin 7. I found a big difference in weight. Then I saw this dream bike and lifted it up. Seriously, I never thought carbon bikes were this light. The employee said it was 19 pounds, though I’m sure it was 22 pounds. Lighter than my fat cat too. Although, another difference was the price being 7x. Maybe someday I’ll get it.

      Hey Robert! I saw a a thread on the MTBR forum where a Supercaliber owner mentioned that. No issues with the IsoStrut assembly on our test bike, which has a nice fit with the bushings, and it hasn’t developed any slop over time either. I won’t speak for Trek, but I suspect that if there was a tolerance issue with the bushings from new, just like a fork it’d be sorted out under warranty as a manufacturing defect. And from what I can tell via the tech document, it looks like a pretty easy process to replace those two bushings if needed. [Wil]

    What´s your opinion about Scott Spark comparing with this bike?

      Good question Joao! The Spark is a brilliant XC bike, even though the current frame is about 4-years old now. It's been some time since I reviewed a Spark, though I was really impressed by the TwinLoc system and its ability to provide three distinct suspension modes, particularly with the middle Traction mode that is ideal for climbing.
      Compared to the Supercaliber, the Spark has a plusher and deeper suspension quality in the fully-open mode, since it does have more travel (100mm vs 60mm).
      However, the Supercaliber is more naturally efficient and is less reliant on you constantly toggling the handlebar remote. You can just leave it open and it pedals amazingly well.
      The handling is sharper and more direct, partly due to the suspension's efficiency, but also because the frame is stiffer laterally thanks to the IsoStrut assembly.
      Another advantage for the Supercaliber is its ability to fit two water bottles - the Spark can only take one, and that's a feature that more riders are taking into consideration these days.
      That aside, Trek only offer the Supercaliber in carbon fibre, and the stock options are very much on the pricier side of things. In comparison the Spark can be had in a much wider range of spec levels, including alloy frames, making it the more accessible of the two.

    I love my Trek rail E. 6.400? I went for a test ride and I had to get it . They gave me a discount 5.700 .way too much$. Lucky I got it , they are hard to find now .

    I have no doubts the procaliber is a fast bike. However god help you when you have to source the bespoke parts. The rear suspension and flexible stays look like a massive gimmick. I might as well get a middle of the range hard tail. I would be just as quick on it as I would on the procaliber.

      Excellent question on the Lux comparison, as it shares a lot in common with the Supercaliber. The Lux also fits two bottles, has a steering limiter, a 2-position lockout, and the claimed frame weight is pretty similar (1,986g vs 1,933g). The geometry is close, but there are some key differences;
      - Head angle: 70 degrees (vs 69 degrees on the Supercaliber)
      - Reach: 435mm (vs 440mm)
      - BB drop: 38mm (vs 53mm)
      - Chainstay length: 435mm (vs 430mm)
      In terms of the riding position, both bikes offer a fairly classic low-and-aggro posture. Handling is nice and sharp, though I found the steeper head angle on the Lux could get a little twitchy on steeper, faster descents. The Supercaliber is surprisingly stable given its shorter rear travel, which I attribute to the slacker head angle and longer front centre, as well as that low-hanging BB, which keeps your COG closer to the ground.
      Both are very efficient in terms of pedalling efficiency, with a firm feeling to the suspension and plenty of anti-squat to keep the shock taut under chain torque. They're stupendous climbers, though I found the Supercaliber to be more supportive to out-of-the-saddle mashing, with less wallowing from the rear shock.
      Obviously the Lux has more rear travel, so there's more comfort available on rougher descents along with better big-hit support compared to the Supercaliber. The Lux is still quite firm in its suspension feel overall though - the Scalpel and Oiz are significantly plusher in comparison.
      Personally, I think both bikes have their advantages and disadvantages, and I would be happy to recommend either for those who are taking their XC racing more seriously.
      Performance nuances aside, the Lux does offer a less proprietary package with its conventional rear shock. And being sold direct-to-consumer, you get fantastic components for the cash. Of course there are advantages to buying a bike through a local bike shop, and Trek offers both a lifetime warranty on the frame, and a 2-year crash replacement scheme on the Bontrager carbon wheels. In comparison, Canyon has just a 2-year warranty on its frames.

    I see the next generation of this frame going to 100mm. With some of today’s World Cup tracks, 60mm doesn’t cut it. Then you can choose a hard tail or a full suspension. Great looking bike though.

    I stand 177-178cm tall, literally in between the M/L and L, I ordered the L though as I've seen most people who were in between sizes chose the larger frame and were very happy with it, what are your thoughts?

    I read before the online review and IT shoks to me, specially related to The 120mm , its amzing.
    1. I m considering one of the frameset kits and I want to Instal an a lefty8 120mm fork; I think IT Will math.

      You can, but we'd much rather see Trek put them on there in the first place so you didn't have to. Not only does it provide a much cleaner fit that makes wheel installation faster and easier (an important consideration for a race bike), it also strengthens the interface between the hub and the fork, resulting in greater torsional stiffness. It's a small detail, but on such a premium race bike, it's all about the small details. [Wil]

      They've held up so far Brian, and I've met full travel a number of times - the noise from the shock was definitely more concerning the first time it happened!       Not with our test bike Paul, and we've not heard of anyone having issues either. Of course anything is possible, but Trek is clearly confident in the design given the Supercaliber comes with a lifetime frame warranty. [Wil]

      Hello there Jack! They're both terrific XC bikes, and certainly have their own distinct personalities.
      If race bike efficiency is your main priority, it's hard to go past the Supercaliber - it is such a wicked pedalling bike.
      The Oiz is the more versatile of the two, it's plusher and more controlled on the descents. For me personally, I'd go for the Oiz as it offers a slightly wider scope of performance over the race-focussed Supercaliber.

    I always find Trek sizing a bit larger.. at least on the road bikes,

      On the frame sizing, I preferred the longer reach of the M/L size. It's only a 15mm difference (440 vs 425mm), but it gave me a slightly more spacious cockpit and a touch more stability. I also found weight distribution to feel more natural with the longer front end.
      The difference is pretty small though, and I was able to adapt to both sizes pretty easily. As mentioned in the review, the stack height is identical between the S-L sizes, so that means you can up or down-size depending on the vibe you're after. I could have potentially fitted a longer 90mm stem on the M size to get the front end even lower for a really aggressive riding position. But for my riding style, I'd prefer to stick with the shorter 70mm stem and the longer reach of the M/L size.
      On the note of sizing, I think it's great that Trek offers a broad range of sizes. It can sometimes make things a little confusing, but it also means it's easier to get the ideal size for your height and proportions, which isn't always a given with every brand out there.

      True what you say about the broad offering on frame sizes from Trek as like in this case, you can opt for the frame style you like best.

    Really like your reviews mate. Extremely thorough and great for the entry level person such as myself to understand. What I can't understand and will more than likely never come to terms with is the ridiculous cost of these bikes. I ride dirt bikes and my fully kitted up Sherco 300 is cheaper than this bike - I just don't get it.

    A year later now, I would love to hear how you used and feel about the 120 fork on the Supercaliber. I am setting up the bike in about 6 weeks and will have both the SID SL ultimate 100 and 120 on had to swap out for events. If I love the frame as much as expected, I will either build a 2nd one with 120 and beefier wheels/tires, and dropper while making the other bike be as light as possible with no dropper, 100 fork, etc. Part of the reason for 2 identical frames is also for servicing down time as well as 12/24 hr races where an identical quick bike swap is ideal.

The decal was missing a piece of a corner but I ended up peeling them off anyways. Assembly is easy BUT make sure you tune up the derailleurs. Both the front and rear need adjusting. I'd advise going to a bike shop but I opted out and put in 10+ hours with the help of RUclips. Ended up fraying a shifter cable but all in all I learned from the experience. The Brakes work well but the front caliper needs adjusting or at least mine did because the rotor was rubbing against the pads. Make sure you swap out the seat, grips, and pedals. For the short run you'll be fine though. I've read that this bike isn't built yet for hard trails but I just need it for the city. PA has some of the worst roads and being in a mountain this was a great choice. Worth the investment!

      In regards to 'organic' pedal efficiency, the Supercaliber is for sure unrivalled amongst the XC race bikes I've tested. The Epic does provide an exceptionally firm platform, but it requires the inertia valve inside the Brain damper to provide that platform. If you turn the Brain 'off' completely, it's not particularly snappy, and actually feels a bit sluggish.
      With the Brain dialled all the way up though, the platform is sufficiently firm, and both bikes feel very efficient and snappy. As to which is more efficient? In my experience that depends on the terrain.
      On smoother sections and on fireroads, I'd say the Epic has the advantage with a really firm damping platform both front and rear. However, as mentioned in the review, the suspension on the Epic is never totally locked out, even with the Brain set to the firmest setting. This differs to the Supercaliber, which has the 2-position remote lockout. When locked out, it's much closer to being fully rigid, which may be a desirable advantage to some riders/racers. Of course the advantage with the Epic though is that you don't need to think about flicking levers at all, so that's potentially an advantage to other riders/racers.
      If we're talking about efficiency while pedalling over rough terrain, both bikes are fast, but they feel quite different. The Supercaliber is able to absorb a lot of the smaller rubble as the suspension is open and initial sensitivity is quite good. On the Epic, if you're hitting bumps that are under the threshold for the inertia valve to activate, you will feel more of those impacts. You really have to attack the trail, and with a little more speed the Brain reacts quickly. If you're off the pace though, the extra chatter can make it feel harsh.
      Personally, I think both bikes have advantages and disadvantages. Some folks will be put off by the shorter travel of the Supercaliber, and others will be put off by the Brain damper on the Epic. Regardless of their quirks, they're both exceptionally premium performers.

      Cheers for watching and for the question. The two bikes are quite different - visually, structurally, and in terms of their performance on the trail.
      Obviously the Supercaliber is much shorter in travel with just 60mm out back. The suspension design is simpler and lighter, and the IsoStrut layout means it'll take two water bottles inside the mainframe (only the XL size Mach 4 SL will take two bottles - all other sizes fit just the one). The overall ride quality is one that biases efficiency and responsive handling over all else, with a sharp feel through the corners and zippy pedalling performance. It's also an incredible bike to climb on. In this way, the Supercaliber effectively bridges the gap between a traditional 100mm XC bike and a hardtail.
      The Mach 4 SL uses a dual-link suspension design, which means its frame isn't quite as light as the Supercaliber, but it does offer more control. The suspension is superb on the Mach 4 SL, with really effective square-edge compliance and excellent stability under pedalling. It's not as snappy as the Supercaliber, but it does offer better comfort, more traction and a more confidence-inspiring ride on the descents. It's also very well balanced with the 120mm travel fork, giving it more versatility beyond just XC racing.
      To sum up; if you wanted a wider scope of performance, and you put a high value on comfort and rough-terrain control, the Mach 4 SL would be the one to go for out of the two. However, if racing is your passion, and you place a greater priority on pedalling efficiency and razor-sharp handling over all else, the Supercaliber is surely as swift as it gets.

      I suspect a lot of folks will be in a similar predicament, though I think it'll come down to your racing aspirations - if you've got a lot of XCO and marathon races on the horizon, the Supercaliber is by far and away the sharper and more efficient of the two. And the dual bottle capability is a big plus for longer distance riding.
      If it's more the odd race that you want to do here and there, and you'd like a more versatile bike for riding more technical terrain, the Top Fuel makes more sense. One of our testers owns a Top Fuel and has set it up with on the lighter side with faster-rolling tyres, and he loves it. He'd be doing 1-2 marathon events per year though, and he likes the more comfortable riding position and more relaxed geometry. While it isn't as sharp and efficient on the race track, it's the more practical and less punishing bike of the two.

      Cheers for the feedback Robert! I think both the Epic and Supercaliber have a very distinctive feel to their suspension performance. While both bikes are trying to achieve the same thing, they're doing it in quite a different fashion, and because of this I suspect like yourself, some riders will be attracted more to one over the other.     Honestly I really dislike the thin seat stays even on road bike. Especially on a MTB I find my feet can rub or bang up against seat stay when pedaling, and its seems to be that thin, if my foot did hit the chainstay it could break it.

    1) Those ugly Rear suspension is Hard/Difficult to service
    2) Having more Flex on the seatstays means this Frame wont Last Long compared to other frames on the market
    3) Its not Light, why bother with 60mm rear suspension? this bike is garbage
