  • In his thought-provoking look at ten noteworthy individuals, Brooks, the longtime New York Times columnist and author of bestselling works The Social Animal and Bobos in Paradise, The Road to Character (Random House, $28) looks hard at what we mean by "character." Is it an innate quality, brought to the surface by particular experiences? Is it something built over time? And can it endure in a culture that values consumption and material gratification over inner fulfillment?

I'm so glad Samuel Johnson was in this, he is the person I thought of when I read the description of this. He is one of the people I most admire.

I was so gratified that his marvelous book celebrated one of the neglected heroes of the civil rights movement Bayard Rustin.

why is the micing always so crummy at these events? david brooks is barely audible, but the volume is cranked to the max for those asking questions.

I think it's relevant that at the time of this book and speech he is likely in the passion and content of a new romantic love.

Did David Brooks really exploit his relationship with his intern Anne Snyder (decades younger than him)? If he were a pastor he would be defrocked. And he lectures us about character, but who is surprised?

How often are your pastors ' defrocked' for their blatant self enrichment and abuse of their position? How often are they 'defrocked' for being caught with rent boys?

It would be meaningful for Mr. Brooks to describe now how regnant right wing .001% libertarianism is a distortion of a search for character, or certainly can be. It is NOT about service to something greater than oneself. It’s all about me me ME. Heaven help us..

Those who are unwilling to dialogue often resort to snide remarks.
