Fun fact: you don’t HAVE to use Shure’s software for this guy. I use this for zoom calls, etc. on a work computer that I’m not allowed to put software on. Just sets up automatically as a class compliant USB audio device
Great video as usual 👍
Excellent info, thanks so much! I’m going to pin your comment
Would you happen to know if it's compatible with Chrome OS devices? In theory, it should work with any Chromebook, but you never really know with tech. It would be for a Pixelbook Go via its USB-C port (and the included Shure cable), specifically.
@@sqsp unfortunately I don’t have the hardware to check that for you. I agree with you, it being class compliant USB it should be peachy. But like you said, hard to be sure.
@@mattseago4384 Thanks, Matt. I'll have to try it out. I'll wait for the MV7 to go on sale and likely buy a Rode NT-USB Mini in the meantime.
Incase you guys have the mv7 like myself, huge tip buy the rk345 which is the shure sm7b pop filter and it fits perfectly on the mv7! Huge night and day difference with the plosives and overall sound. Makes the mv7 sound literally identical
I 2nd this...I wish the guy in video would of put the pop filter on to show it.
should i plug the Mv7 in XLR, or just use usb?
@@pompeyboy1612 the xlr input will provide a much better sound than usb
@@MariosKJ which xlr interface should I get
@@pompeyboy1612 i have a scarlet 3rd generation single xlr output. It’s perfect for what i use it for.
This is one of the absolute best review videos of a tech product I've ever watched to date! No time wasted, no boring 2 minutes intro, you showed everything one needs to make a clear judgement about these two microphones, if I would have to criticise this video in any way, I couldn't, too damn perfect!
I love how thorough this was. This is exactly what I wanted and I'll probably listen to this again. Subbed.
wow, finally someone who knows how to do a good mic comparison video, short, not long winded, has the other mic right there, with back to back comparisons, good job
Appreciate ya!
I have the MV7 and love running it auto / dark mode. I tried putting a 7b pop filter on it, and YES, it absolutely works better with plosives. I hate the look of it however, so took it off almost immediately. Modulating my space is what I settled on for a solution. Thanks for the video!
Really appreciated this review and compatriots more than you know. Was all business and straight forward not too much fluff. Thank you a ton man. Sincerely.🤝🏽
Was listening to it on cell phone speakers.. and the SM7B still managed to sound luscious.. wow. Guess a classic is a classic for a reason.
I just bought a Shure Mv7 today.
Thanks you so much for great video.
What an awesome video dude! Excellent insight!!
Great review Colt, straight and to the point!
Thanks!
Incredibly efficient comparison. Thank you!
Thanks for watching
Love it man ! Really helpfull to choose between these mics!
Thanks!!
This Video made me want to buy The SM7B even more than before! I really really didn't like the flat sound of the MV7 whereas the SM7B brings so much color and flavour into the recordings.. Probably a good mic for people who want to strictly get into things like podcasting and prefer a plug and play usb mic over a more expensive mic that needs to be paired up with interfaces/preamps etc..
Great Video as always tho! Thanks for your efforts!🖤
I see so many people using the SM7B, pretty much on everything. Great review, Thanks.
Good video nicely thought out delivery 🧤
I think they sound similar depending on mic placement instead of all things being equal. the mv7 seems more sensitive to distance and maybe has more side rejection making it quickly thin out depending on mic technique so best used up close (like Joe rogan does) and it sounds more like the sm7b does at a few inches away, as for the explosives, a small pop filter or up close and off axis and it’s gonna be very similar. The mv7 has more midrange detail, but maybe your sm7b needs a cloud lifter in between? Great video!
It's tough to beat the classic! Great video, Colt.
Just bought this as my first decent mic! Coming from a ModMic 4.0, stoked!
If I didn't already have the SM7B and a mixer, I would definitely buy the MV7. It seems like a definite upgrade over the Yetti and other comparable mics in that price range. The 250 price tag is where it may hurt them. It's too bad they didn't try to place it around the 150-200 range. I would see this as a stop gap between the two if you are not ready or can't afford a XLR interface/mixer. The Mic sounds great and the app seems good.
Yetti I would say still has a edge in relation to proximity. If you are one of those streamers that doesn't want to be really close to the mic and just want it on your desk or something Yetti shines there.
why downgrade?
Great comparison!! Thanks bro
I’d love to see you do a comparison with the Aston stealth microphone that they made to compete with these.
Hey man, I’m not sure if this is something you’d be interested in doing a video on, but I love the videos. And I’m learning so much, so first off, thank you so much for the content you make.
But on the topic of the SM7B, and screaming / hardcore vocals. I love that kind of music, and I want to learn how to capture those vocals well and how to MIX them well…. Would you be interested in doing a video on those kind of vocals?
Awesome video man. The MV7 may not have had the power to fully drive your headphones. I have the same issue with my Audio-Technica M50X's. When I try listening to them when plugged into my cell phone, for example, it just doesn't drive them, but into a PC jack or an audio interface they work great.
Subbed just because you used a Spyderco in your video. Great review!
do you recommend the audio technica headphones for studio use? also i’m in the market for studio monitors, what are your thoughts on the kali lp-6? great video as always and keep it up!
Hey man, thanks for such a concise review. I'm a new podcaster and it seems to be picking up. I'm currently using a camera mic and I'd like to upgrade and I'm considering the Shure MV7 vs Zoom's ZDM-1. Shure is double the price but I need advice as to whether I do need to go for the better end (Shure MV7) right now or take it step by step and get the Zoom and eventually upgrade so I can have that bit of new equipment pleasure. Any advice would be super appreciated. Thanks again.
Very cool thanks so much Colt!
Thanks for watching!
I just want to say you did a fantastic comparison, I just watched another comparison video where the guy plugs both in but runs the sm through an amp first and not the mv7 he also does not use the software for the mv7. I will say in your video they are much closer in sound to each other than youd think. still curious to see the auto leveling feature of the mv7 though but great video.
Super informative review! I couldn't spring for the cost of the SM7B, so I chose the XLR-only version of the MV7 + Cloudlifter + Focusrite Scarlett Solo. I didn't care for the sound of the MV7's built-in preamp in this comparison.
Do you think that's a decent setup for podcasting?
Thank you for the review. When you say 7b is your favorite for back vocals, which one would be your favourite for lead pop vocal ? And also which one would you prefer between the Rhode NT1 and the AKG c214?
My goal is to be a voice actress and both were recommended to me, so thanks for the thorough comparison!
Hey colt. At any point were you using your 7up on any of these? Or could u tel us the difference in signal between the two? I know the sm7 has benefitted from a signal booster.
podcast mics, pocket knives and brcc? this dude knows how to party
You know it! Hah Thanks for watching
Well clearly Explained, Thank you Mate
How is the headphones that you’re wearing? Would recommend them to be the best for podcasting with the rode caster pro? Or do you know if something better and possibly cheaper
Nice review Colt. I don't have a need for the MV7 since I already own an SM7B. However, I agree with your recommended uses for the 7B and am curious what you would suggest using for a mic to record Lead Vocals,....one that might be in the same price range? Regards! Tony
Do you have a video of your EQ & Compression set ups.. just to see what we would need to recreate the final segment's sound
thanks for the great info!
Hello colt, does the mv7 is doing well on background noise?
What microphone did you use to record your video intro? Where there was no visible microphone on screen?
just got my mv7 from amazon, heard nothing but great reviews about the mic, great video........🤙😎🤘
after 4 months did you have any issues with it? looking to buy it.
@TheSmokeGoblin I kept plugging in and unplugging device and the USB port went inside of the mic...... thankfully I purchased insurance, getting another sent in a week or so. Great mic..... 🤘😎🤙
I'm definitely subscribing to your channel.
Great review, really love it... helped so much in my selection... going for the SM7B :-)
first lol always a great comparison, love to hear you thoughts on these, how would you compare the MV7 to a PodMic with a foam windscreen?
LETSSS GOOOOOO!! Haha thanks for watching!
Would love to hear some vocal samples in various recorded songs
Great review, but what knife is that?? Lol I'm looking for one
There is a dope hack for this mic, using the sm7b windscreen (RK345) on the mv7, and it fixes a plosive issue it has
Great to know!
@@ColtCapperrune Give it a little while until this becomes better known and stores will start bundling them together
i came here for the comparison between these two but now im wondering if the mv7 is a noticable upgrade from a blue yetti?
Which mic do you think is better for voice over/narration? (with a preamp) I'm curious what you all think.
I just purchased the shure MV7 and my microphone has a weird hiss/static noise.
I am using the stock cables ?
Any ideas why?
Which preamp do you used on this video for the MV7?
Trying to kick off podcasting and would like to buy a Shure SM7B. What are the basic equipments I need to start.
I’m interested to hear it on snare, assuming it can handle that kind of volume.
Have you tried the Presonus PD70 yet? It’s really impressive
What camera are you using?
Sony A6400 and Sigma lenses.
I bought the MV7 and I love it I am using it via USB for now until my pre-amp comes in then will use it via XLR
hello can you give me the link where you buy that mic boom stand??
Hello bro Can i use Shure Mv7 with audacity??
I realize that I am late to the party (LOL), but you did a very good job here. The SM7B is the SM7B and everything else is just a comparison. I have used it for years and it never disappoints. Shure sent me the MV7 a while back and unless I really got after it with EQ and such, it was a cheap alternative. I say cry once, spend the extra money and buy the tried and true. Oh ya, and FYI, sweetwater has always been trash to me. I will never buy from them again. Great review though!
Sm7b does sound like it has that fuller but I'm not sure which I'll get still but this was great
is the mv7 usb mic louder than sm7b? do you need anything else to make it good?
Do you know if the mount on the sm7b can be used on the MV7?
Hi which camera are you using please?
thank u colt .... you made best compare video //// i feel MV7 is number 1 yet ... ticker sound warm and balance levels ... that price has reason
I own the sm58 and after this video i think the appropriate future upgrade will be the sm7b and not the mv7, thanks for the good comparison tho
I own both, and the SM7B has its own tone compared to the 57/58, not just a slight difference in frequency response. Its probably from the larger capsule. It’s much smoother and full bodied than the 58, which has a thinner, harder sound in the mids. When I’ve recorded both for studio vocals, I pick the SM7B every time unless I’m going for a more Lo-fi sound.
@@DannyKavka agreed! And way better low end! The 58/57 were designed for live play but have worked great in all kinds of recording for years with their punchy mids! That said neither can touch the warmth and character of the SM7B once you get in the lower ranges, and the SM7B has a roundness throughout does make it significantly smoother.
all the time your MV7 stand moved and put you mouth off of the axis of the microphone. and im pretty shure that with some processing you can get something really similar to the SM7B :o
One thing not mentioned in this review is how each microphone deals with handling noises and I have both SM7B and MV7, and SM7B handles it way way way better than MV7. I do live streams and moving the mic gets really loud on MV7 and it's pretty much a major pain point for me.
Does the MV7 need an interface? like a Focusrite interface?
whats the name of that desk mount for the mic?
what are the boom arms your using?
It seems like the MV7 has alot more plosives... seems like it would definitely benefit from a pop filter
I agree. The foam on the SM7B was more effective
@@ColtCapperrune The rk345 windscreen on the sm7b fits on the mv7 nicely. That was the first thing I did when I got my mv7.
Great video, but it would been nice to hear a singing comparison
from the comparisons I love SM7B seems perfect if your doing long term useage of mic. so you can lean back and not worry to much. the MV7 got way to quiet as leaned back . witch is big thing for me. only thing I might add is a small pop filter for the SM7B
I would like the mv7 at $100 - $150. At that price, the sound quality of the sm7 is worth the difference.
Personally I agree
this is exactly what i was thinking too. i got the mv7 yesterday and I feel like its lackluster. Def going back after today to upgrade
That is already the case. The Shure MV7X is an M7 without the USB port, just like the SM7B.
What mic stand do you use
This is the new budget king no contest whatsoever. It almost satisfies the needs of a pro with a good amp and eq.
The mv7 sounds more detailed. Like it has compression and the 1khz range boosted. which might also explain the less dramatic difference when moving back and forth on the proximity effect
what is that mic stand please sir?
Proximity is a definite issue in this comparison.
Being on top of the SM7B and backed off the MV7 is not a straight/even comparison between the two.
Both sound fairly good but personally prefer the SM7B over most mics in most situations but not all.
Good vid.
Did you use any sort of cloud lifter or anything? Or do those preamps just have a lot of gain?
That marvellous preamp costs 7-800 $, it HAS a lot of gain, for sure... 😁
The thumbnail DEFINITELY screams “Size matters”
is this best for song recording
7B still blows everything away. 🤘
Came for the mic, stayed for the Sipdey-flick
Haha 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
I went see your website. Very Very good Job ! I like your Style of Music.
Girl like you I THOUGHT it was Chris Daughtry !
This Town is you. ... superb too.
And the Song : go little Lady excellent ! !!!!!!!
Frank
Thanks so much! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
What do you guys think about the mv7 XLR only version?
its the same just cheaper and no usb so no software
At the first try, usb connected, sounds very well... Is that raw sound from mic?
Until the last segment, all the audio was completely wrong. I notated when there was EQ and compression on the screen. Thanks for watching!
Which would be best for a streamer in a untreated room with a house with a lot of outside noise (dogs barking)?
both are fine. But if you have a good preamp the SM7B wins hands down.
What about monitor delay if monitoring thru computer.
Some reviews make the MV7 sound more bass heavy and not so... mid. I don't know if I should get it or change my gaze on a yeti for example
Do XLR connection with audio interface increase the volume of sure mv7. please reply, I am going to buy evo 4 Audio interface only just so I can increase the volume of the mic will it works? Will I get more volume with xlr as compare to USB or they will be same?
Please reply I love ur viedos
I have Evo 4 and Mv7, yes it does increase the volume of the mic
love the PM3, but love the spydie Stretch more, lol
THanks
SMB7 has more variety in sound and would be better for loud singing considering it's SPL difference;
MV7 seems better price wise and with EQ just for general podcasting or streaming I think that price difference makes it the better package value wise.
So unless you don't really care about price I would say the MV7 is the better value overall.
For podcasting should i just go with the classic ? Or does it really matter ? Also what camera are you using think its dope
If you have the money, don’t need the USB connectivity, and have a great preamp, I would go with the SM7B all day. I’m running a Sony a 6400 with a couple Sigma lenses. Thanks for watching!
Thanks
I've seen another review where the mics sound the opposite of what they do here. It seems there are other variables at play.
In your review the MV7 sounds like AM radio, and the SM7B like FM radio. In another review it's the exact opposite. And they're talking into them from the same distance you are.
How does this handle rap in an room not treated for sound?
it's so funny how the mv7 was slowly sliding down in the comparison lol
