The thing with the ending of Chapter 3 is that it ENTIRELY makes sense within the lore that a Harlequin of his stature could pull that off. Because it's not just ANY Harlequin, it's a Solitaire. Solitaires take normal Harlequins and make them look subpar, because Solitaires embody Slaanesh in their plays. They kind of tap into the Eldar's biggest fear, and basically no Eldar, not even most Archons, are willing to tick off a Solitaire. They effectively have free reign to do anything they wish, because they have the strength to back it up in Dark Eldar land and the normal Eldar respect them sufficiently.

    • @gallow_walker
      @gallow_walker Месяц назад +92

It's interesting how the status of the Solitaires within Eldar society mirrors that of the Rogue Trader. Obviously there are taxonomical differences, but they serve very similar roles as galivanting corsairs with little oversight. It really shows how much history in 40k repeats itself, as different species ascend, stagnate, and fall. It happened with the Eldar, it's happening to humanity, and it'll happen to the T'au.

    • @infernodelta70
      @infernodelta70 Месяц назад +47

@@gallow_walkerThe really interesting thing comes in the fact that the Solitaires act with the knowledge that their society has already fallen and is circling the drain, and as such, every action they commit is just, because they can. No real greater reason, just a drive to do whatever they can, however they can.
Because if your world is ending, why quibble over the details?

Nope, only someone like Captain Generals can deal with them.
U know that Solitaire can take on Greater Daemon to survive or win.
In the Battle of Lion Gate, 2 Tribunes were dead against the Greater Daemon they fought through their units managed to banish them. Only The current Captain General banished his Daemon without dying. That is a battle they fought alongside the other part of the Talons so the Daemons were nerfed quite a bit. The battle was the biggest losses for Custodes ever since the Heresy with thousand dead and many couldn't be saved as they didn't have enough Dreadnoughts.

To be fair, their other games, especially WotR are better, simply by the fact of the material alone.
Big problem with WH40k setting is, that pretty much everything is just evil.
In Rogue Trade you can play fanatic evil (dogmatic), chaotic evil (heretic) what both just puts you on the same level as pretty much everyone else or completly out of place with iconoclast, where you pretty much act like a decent human being that is not just utterly crazy, what feels like the biggest impact, but also a bit ridiculous, since the most reaction you get from the NPC is utter disbelief (from both evil sides).
WotR meanwhile, even with some of the choices limited, really gives you quite the different pathes, several good, several neutral, several evil - and those evil pathes are actually evil and not just "well, yeah, you do the same disgusting shit as everyone else, so who cares".
It's quite comical when you get into the oh so evil space 'drow' city and when you think about - it's not really that much different to what the Empire is doing, with the main difference that the Drukhari got an actual reason for being evil, since they survive by that pain and suffering, while the Empire is evil for no purpose at all, actually even the opposite, since of course billions of suffering humans massively empower chaos and make it way worse in its attitude.

@miriamweller812 well, it's called Grimdark for a reason. I don't have a problem with dark and depressing setting of the Warhammer universe simply because my life isn't that far away from it. And even though in games such as Baldur's Gate 3 I do prefer to play as a Neutral Good character, because it's pretty much the only place where I can find and do something good for virtual people that are still appreciate it, Warhammer just feels like home to me. Dark, hopeless and unforgiving.

Point of order: an infinity circuit is not a generator. More like a computer. It holds all the souls of every Eldar of that craftworld and it is the magic stuff that keeps the giant world ship going. In times of war they even pull souls out to fashion Wraithguard and Wraith Lords and other constructs, animated by the dead, to fight. It is a very important part of Eldar culture, since it is the only thing they have for an afterlife that isn't an infinity of torture.

The souls of the dead Eldar are stored in the Craft World's infinity circuit, and as long as they're in there, She Who Thirsts can't devour them. They also have plenty of company in there. But if they take your soul out to stick in a wraithguard, and that wraithguard is destroyed, you're probably going to be a snack for Slaanesh.
I could be wrong. I'm no expert on Eldar.

For the wraithguard, I think the body has a spirit stone backup, but I might be wrong. And even if it is, it can be broken. It is said the eldar do not enjoy having to bring out the wraith golems, the bodily wastes have to hit the fan pretty hard for Granny Miime to be handed a D-cannon again.

So far in the video, I've gotten to you saying that you like to play the good guy and will be sticking with Iconoclast, which I'm really happy to hear. Playing as a good guy in this game is really fun given how depressing WH40K is, so being able to show other people basic human compassion and empathy, along with helping whoever you can, is just cathartic. I've always appreciated how OwlCat Games has the NPC's in their games be supportive of your actions for being a good person, and I think they did a fantastic job in this one. Thank you for the 6 hour video as well! The interactions with the Aeldari and Drukhari as an Iconoclast funny as hell sometimes-
Aeldari: "You Monkeigh are beneath us, all you do is destroy and burn, and we just want to live here in peace. If you do not leave, we will be forced to-"

1:40:10 Damn the Fidelio quest is even better than I though. When I did it I pretended to be Fidelio at the beggining and it led to a comedy of errors where you have to survive multiple assassination attempt from guests trying to kill you for the inheritance, and during that time the rogue tradder and their retinue get progressively more and more annoyed that they got mixed up in some inheritance drama they couldn't care less about, just because of one stupid lie at the beggining.
It was a really funny quest, I really liked the ending : you finally managed to convience everyone you're not Fidelio and you lied, you then talk to the priest and finally get to ask the question "Who in the name of the golden throne is Fidelio ?!". And in this path of the quest the priest doesn't tell you, you never learn who the person you impersonnated was or why they got the inheriance xD

On the topic of Aeldari racism:
The prononciation of their favored insult is fairly fluid, usually alternating between "Mon-Key" and "Mon-Kai" interchangeably. As far as the difference between the Dark Aeldar and the normal Aeldari, the Dark Aeldar are more or less unwilling or incapable of giving up the hedonism and excess that defined the Aeldari race pre-Slanesh. The Aeldari proper took a look back at their big whoopsie and decided "Woe is us, we need to be better!" And refined their smug superiority to modern Bhuddist levels.

@@jamesbridgman7298 You're correct. Slaneesh already has a hold on the souls of the Dark Aeldari, and is slowly leeching them for just existing. It's why they (the Dark Aeldari) torture and be sadists, because it's the only way for them to refill their souls and avoid Slaneesh consuming them whole. They don't have the spirit stones and the Infinity Circuit of the Craftworld Aeldari to protect them from Slaneesh, or Cegorach's protection over the Harlequins.
The Drukhari are trapped on a boat punctured with holes, and no matter how much water they throw overboard, it'll eventually come to a point where the boat starts sinking.

That was a copy of a version of you that never had a dominant ideology. I played my first run without a dominant ideology and the Iconoclast copy showed up for me. They're very nice. You can tell who is who based on the companion by their side, the Iconoclast copy's companion is Abelard, and I believe the no path one has no companion. It's to mirror the choice at the beginning of the game where Abelard, Idira, and Argenta give you an option corresponding to each of the three main paths.

Honestly, as a 40k veteran at this point, i found that (pertaining to your later point) the depth of existing lore helped to uplift the stories of the characters that you follow, despite the occasional shortcoming. In particular I found Argenta's last quest to be almost farcical with the sudden fade-to-black followed by reemergence with some sick-ass power armour. You did miss on some good comic relief without Jae on your team, but she doesn't really contribute to the story as a whole, I found.
Nevertheless, I was never able to make Pasqal as busted as you did, my mechanical bullshittery consisted of stacking as much stuff on Argenta as possible then hosing everything down with a heavy bolter. Which was satisfying in its own way!

Hilarious and awesome quest

Regarding the recruit on Rykard Minoris around 43:30. If you don't land on the planet first. The traitor actually takes his place

Abelard, present 'A novel crammed into a RUclips comment' for me!
"Thank you for creating this video, such a nice christmas gift. Rogue Trader quickly elevated itself in my eyes to be one of the top5 Rpgs of all time, especially after Wrath of the Righteous. It has to be one of the best cast of companions Ive interacted with, all fitting into the lore. If I tried gushing about them, Id be here all day. With all their personal quests, and post-credits scenes, they really emphasized these people have their own lives, theyre not all dependent on every word you as the protagonist breathe. Safe to say, we got not one, but TWO Arueshalaes this time in Cassia and Yrliet for the price of one. Heinrix and Abelard are also personal favorites of mine. And Marazhai is hilarious every time he speaks in the most morbid way imaginable.
And by the God-Emperor, were they faithful to the lore. Now Ive heard some real diehard fans argue about details and they got fair points, but it still feels like 40k at the end of the day, so Im sold. It feels good, from the atmosphere to the portraits to the music to the maps to the scope of the campaign, its all grand and epic and thematic.
And by all the Chaos Gods, the choices for enemies. Tzeentch? Yes! Necrons? Yes! Dark Eldar with an entire Commorragh sequence? Hell yes! All these races are so underrepresented in 40k media it feels like, and these are the perfect races to do an RPG with. These races think, theyre devious, theyre planners, theyre smarter and wiser than most humans ever could hope to be, even in this setting. (Its a miracle Tzeentch got a 2nd debut this year with Space Marine2, another 40k masterpiece. Just as planned, some might say.)
Maybe havent played enough games, but just the fact of not having money as a system, just buying out stuff based on reputation is such a cool and unique idea. Or the officer class who isnt doing anything by themselves, but heavily buffs others. Using the Warp summons in demons randomly. The three-way allegiance system where you can roleplay a normal person in 40k and everyone will look at you like an idiot or an oddity. There are so many of these great and unusual ideas in this game, that Im more than willing to look past its minor mistakes and bugs which get ironed out slowly but surely anyway.
Cant wait to see what else Owlcat cooks up for this game, and for the future. (Argenta romance when?) They didnt get as big as Larian, but god they deserve the AAA budget for these games. The voice actors did a stellar job as is with the limited voice lines."

56:20 "It has long been in your capability to transform these worlds. Baal Primus is dead, but you need not let your remaining people suffer unnecessarily. Will they fight any better for dwelling on a world that kills them? By sacrificing their children to the Emperor’s service, they have earned a better life. Once you have torn that blasphemy down, raise up the population of Baal Secundus. Teach them what we are fighting for. A line must be drawn between what is good and what is evil, for if the Great Enemy comes with offers of power to a wretch, what reason does he have to refuse hell if he dwells in it already?"

Great video Salt. A pity you missed out on Jae, she’s kind of a perfect fit for the crime lord-Iconoclast path. Part of her loyalty quest involving a trip to the Administratum is peak humor for this game.

Not even a day ago was thinking "been a minute since a new Salt Factory video" so this was a very welcome surprise. I legit had no idea this game was even a thing but I also didn't get back into PC gaming until I finally got a new gaming computer this past summer.
