Rent a house with 3 bed and AC near a main city. I use saving in Canada only for my health insurance and emergencies expenses. Good luck with John.
Hi. Paul and Baby Mae. I first went to The Phillipines in 1998 and absolutely loved it , and did about 50 trips travelling around the islands till I retired in 2012 . I settled in Angeles City which I loved then, but not at all now. I still remember my average monthly expenditure which was 55,000 pesos a month. Half of that cost was the monthly rate at the America Hotel. The rest was for meals and entertainment and dating. From what I am hearing ten years on, the same fun and lifestyle would cost 120,000 a month. That’s without throwing your money around. I eventually switched to Thailand because I had it better for the same monthly expenditure.

Hi Paul. John & Elsa here. We live in Davao. Living here costs less than 800 dollars a month. My income each month is more than 2000 dollars a month. We wash our own clothes. We drink Arabica coffee using Coffee maker better than buying Coffee outside. Our rent each month is 7000 pesos. We live well here in a sub division with swimming pool and sports centre.
$6 bucks for a gallon of gas, rent in Reno NV is 1200 for a small one bedroom, utilities for electric are about $125 a month average. Car payment $500 for a Ford Escape Hybrid.
My monthly budget here in CDO is the same, $1500-1700 per month. Big house in subdivision with me, wife, daughter, sister-in-law. It's a very nice life. Very happy here.
Hi guys! Paul, I watched your video about how you and Baby Mae met and I was so moved. You two look great and are a fun couple. I see all these comments about guys wanting to meet Filipinas and think they're all like Mae but after seeing your old video, Mae truly has genuinely a good heart and that is a very unique trait. Not too many women there have that. I have distant relatives and can totally relate to her story and background. Thanks for an informative video about PH budgeting :)
Was a nice video, words of wisdom from what I can tell from your blogs someone that has adjusted well to your new life in a foreign country. Now I’m sure some days/months are better than others, that’s life right? I believe a big part of your successful transition is the great partner you have found, ( no easy feat in and of itself)! So really wish the best of life & health to you both. Signed; your neighbor in Guam!
I like your videos Paul since you speak so directly without any kind of script, budget is very individual according to what needs each and one have but fully possible to live a simple life if you live alone or have a sensible lady like Baby Mae 🙂. My wife and I and the kids will go for a vacation to Cebu / Bohol / Bantayan this summer. On holiday we probably spend much more than we spent when we lived there. I remember that during my 10 years in the Philippines I never succeeded with the budget, as unexpected expenses always appeared. I think everyone is experiencing unexpected expenses in the Philippines.
I will have a bit more of a budget. In fact, I could live in the US retired, however as a pauper. For me, it will be about quality of life. The ability to save a bit each month, which on the pension I will have will be tough to do in the States. Of course, there is the escape from being invisible as a 60 year old man here that really draws me. It will be nice to live in a society that appreciates thos of us in our golden years.
Thank you for your videos, your information is very valuable to me because I will be retiring in the next few years, it gives me ideas where to retire to and how much money I will need.
Thank you Paul for your detailed and transparent cost of living situation in Negros. However, requirements for retirees to obtain a permanet visa in Mexico have changed dramatically last year: Temporary resident income proof requirements - Investments above $43,200USD over past 12 months OR monthly pension income of at least $2,600USD over past 6 months OR real estate in Mexico with value exceeding $6.9 million pesos (equivalent to USD 342k). Permanent resident income proof requirements - Investments above $173,000USD over past 12 months OR monthly pension income of at least $4,300USD over past 6 months. (absolutely ludicrous imho)
I used to get an FM3 visa. I found that not one time was I ever asked to produce it. honestly people can get the FMM which is good for 180 days at about $30 and avoid the hassle of having to show all the documentation which for people's information has to be translated into spanish.
@@donh5794 A lot more than decades ago! I heard if you plan to live there full time, have at least $1,500 a month if you plan to live with a Western lifestyle!
I just found your channel and your talk about my current situation. I’m 51 and waiting on my disability decision so I can become a expat like you. I’ll be receiving the same as you but after this video I think I should save up a few months because of all things you’ve mentioned. Right now I’m at $0 dollars but doing my homework about where to stay in the Philippines.
Paul, Thank you for the budget information. I am big on budgets. At almost 90 years old I do one main budget per month plus two per week (mostly for outgoing expense) (Each bank account) etc. I use excel. I would suggest excel if you wish since it is self calculating and really helps you keep track of everything. Here on the Central Coast California, We pay the City for electricity, water, sewer, trash pickup. Always over $200 per month. Gas heating $60 in summer and now $160 + in winter. Internet $58 per month TV we have free ROKU. Food $600 per month. You can see where this is going. The old USA has gone. I came here 68 years ago. It was a fantastic place and so cheap to live. After 10 months I received a draft notice so volunteered for the draft to go early. We are having a hard time now just like most folks here, Rents around here for a house around $1,800 to $2,500 and selling for over $500,000. I am married to a Filipina 30 years yesterday but too old to come to PI. Thank you again Paul for sharing your budget ----------------------Most interesting----------------------Howard & Family

We have a women that comes everyday who cooks and cleans, etc. and we have a live in helper, plus we sponsor the helpers grand daughter for school supplies, uniforms, etc. We own our own house, and I have a scooter.
Thanks Paul for the good details, including budget, how much it cost when you first started there and the inflation vacation. I enjoy your sense of humor too.
Your a lucky man Paul you have a beautiful lady to share your life with. Over Here in Australia like the US prices have gone through the roof. Rent - Shopping - Utilities - Fuel - Mortgages. alot of owners who have investment properties are selling up which has caused thousands of now Homeless people. I guess the world over are going through the same thing. Hopefully within a year or two things may go back to a semi normal? And your right everyone is now learning to live within their means or go broke. I like the vids you make and you have a nice girl who is one of the decent ones.unlike poor John.who unfortunately got put through the ringer.
I'll bet she's really good at math. Most people that are good at math, good with numbers, are also good at saving money. That's a good partner in life to have.
Nice and truthful vid Paul. Listen guys and gals. If you plan on renting $1500 to 2k a month is needed to handle your month to month period! We own our own home in the Philippines, we paid cash for the new truck, we paid cash for our Bajaj running around vehicle, and we have absolutely ZERO DEBT. with that being said our monthly out of pocket is $960.00 per month. If you have an emergency (And You Will) you better have 2k to 5k put back depending on the emergency you have. If its medical it will be on the higher end. DO NOT THINK UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES you can move to the Philippines on less than $1300 depending on your lifestyle. I assure you that you will be looking for other avenues for income. ie: A RUclips blogging channel but with the saturation of them in the Philippines the chances of you making anything is slim. Good luck to all. Regards
My wife does own our property. However the hugh misconception is that the forigner has no stake. If you are married to a filipina and build a home here, land and building you legally have some protection. The guy's buying property and building a home under "We're not married but I love you" train of thought can cost you. If you marry first then accumulate you have some legal protection. Good luck.
@@golden.lights.twinkle2329 From the many discussions amongst expats living in the Phils, it appears that if you are married to a Fililippino(a), your ownership is 40% even if you have forked 100% of the costs
Yup. Excel is essential for budgeting and practical anticipation . Medical costs are seriously important so what do you do about that......or..... does your 'family' have to do a typically PI whip-around? And so on.... including saving a sinking fund for unexpected costs? Coffee .... I agr that is important! Did you mention gasoline ....or petrol as I call it? Thank you anyway...it all helps. 🙏

Hey Paul, I’ll eventually get to the Philippines one day but for now I went back to work. I will be 60 this year and my financial advisor is highly suggesting that I take Social Security at 62 until my annuity fully matures Because I was burning through my IRA last year and little too much. It’s getting harder and harder for an old person retired living on Social Security or a person living on SSI disability to live in United States. Inflation is it a mean mother f**ker and it has no mercy for people who have a little or no Financial stability.
YOU ARE A ONLY A BULLSHITTER AND A BEGGAR HERE IN DUMAGUETE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU ARE JUST ONLY USING THAT POOR LADY BABY MAE, DIRTY OLD SHIT MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A good one if you haven’t done it yet would be how to do it on the cheap.. without bar hoping or chasing tail or anything. Just laying low. Cheap but responsibly comfortable apartment and where to eat cheap and buy food, clothing and stuff like that.
Thanks for the update. I live comfortably in California on $1800 6 months a year and Spend 6 months in Thailand/Philippines/Colombia or Mexico. And funny enough I usually spend about 1800 abroad too (excluding airfare). IMO the 2 main reasons for being broke in the US are housing and vehicle. Don't rent more house than you need, I pay $600 in California for a 1br apartment. And don't buy a new car. The 50% depreciation hit your paying every 3-5 years is the difference between a funded 401k and retiring broke. Buy a 5-7 year old Japanese car used and drive it into the ground, put what you woulda been paying in car payment into 401k. I have 2 vehicles, car and motorcycle but their both Japanese and someone else payed the depreciation. As for food, I treat going out as an occasion. Happy to pay to spend time with friends or family in a nice place. But I'm not paying $5 for a coffee in a drive through for a coffee I can make at home. I'm also buying more pork and ground turkey from Costco in bulk vs chicken at the supermarket these days.
Very smart intelligent advice that 90per cent of us don't do they want us to spend all of what we earn if not more the world is not a good place at the moment god help us when China invades tiawon
600 a month for 1bd in CA. My friend pays 2300 for a modest apartment there. Even in the San Joaquin valley it's expensive so I have no idea how you're pulling that off.
Do you mean living on $1,800 a month in California for 6 months and $600 for a 1br apt back in the 1990's or earlier? I lived in CA a long time ago and still visit frequently.

In Thailand I transfer my US pension money into a Thai bank every month. In the past year the Thai Baht depreciated 11% compared to the USD. In other words I got an 11% raise this year. My monthly budget here in CDO is the same, $1500-1700 per month. Big house in subdivision with me, wife, daughter, sister-in-law. It's a very nice life.
Very happy here.
Good Luck too you youth Both, good Video Keep up the good work x
Makes a lot of sense... i lived in Mexico for 5 years and loved it. awesome video you guys...
I've been parking my money in the stock market in dividend stocks and living off the dividends. That saved my life
Thank you Paul. Good video and nice seeing baby mae also. Looking forward to your next video.
Good job Paul explaining your budget. " Never live beyond your means." You and Mae are looking great.
Thanks for the video Paul. Great idea to maybe not save, but pay debt down.
I really like videos like this. Thank you for the information.
Good to see a happy and compatible couple.
Congratulations on finding each other.
Wow, thanks for sharing with us.
I love that idea Paul! Inflation Vacation! Thank you for being so transparent with your budget
That's getting more expensive then even Thailand!
One can live in Singapore for those amounts. Screw Mexico!
I used to get an FM3 visa. I found that not one time was I ever asked to produce it. honestly people can get the FMM which is good for 180 days at about $30 and avoid the hassle of having to show all the documentation which for people's information has to be translated into spanish.
@@johnsmith-gs4qf How expensive is Thailand now? I was there decades ago when costs were low.

@@NeverGiveup-go7og Thank you, Most kind of you to comment. I am a real survivor, grew up during WWII dodging the bombs. Life hands us some difficult situations but we always seem to get through. Very nice of you to give support. Why stuck in Missouri ?????
@@butterworthchapman6075 I’ve gone to the Philippines every winter for 18 years past winter because of Covid we were stuck in Missouri freezing at least I am pretty sure you had warm weather in California have a great week good thing is we both have Filipina wives😀🌴🌴🍺

Great information, Mae and Paul. Thank you.
Thanks for your honesty and for
just telling it like it is.
I try
First time on your channel and loved it! Great job both of you. Will watch some others
Our monthly budget is $1500/ month Canadian, ( about $1162/mon US ). For everything. We have a women that comes everyday who cooks and cleans, etc. and we have a live in helper, plus we sponsor the helpers grand daughter for school supplies, uniforms, etc. We own our own house, and I have a scooter.
thanks for helping John out. not just with some money for necessities but with some moral support and kindness.
So nice of you to be caring for your grandaughter! 😉
Being happy and having fun with what you have and still being able to save. The key to happiness definitely.
Interesting this with the economics abroad..that said, your girlfriend looks really nice and friendly Paul..
Paul, I like when you talk and Baby Mae nods her head in agreement. 👍😉
Excellent Idea. Take care OD TEAM!
Thanks Paul for the good details, including budget, how much it cost when you first started there and the inflation vacation. I enjoy your sense of humor too.
Great video. Thankyou
Your a lucky man Paul you have a beautiful lady to share your life with.
Over Here in Australia like the US prices have gone through the roof.
Rent - Shopping - Utilities - Fuel -
Mortgages. alot of owners who have investment properties are selling up which has caused thousands of now Homeless people.
Great job guys! I really enjoyed it!
I'm 51 my Filipina is 20..and I live comfortably on 1400 in the provinces
I'll bet she's really good at math. Most people that are good at math, good with numbers, are also good at saving money. That's a good partner in life to have.
The inflation vacation is a great suggestion that I never would have thought of. Thank you for an awesome informative video!
Simple life, happy life.🙂
Checking in from Tampa, FL Great video. I can't get over how much weight you have lost too. Looking great my friend
Thanks so much
Good for both of you!
Great food for thought 👍
INFORMATIVE Sir Paul!!!
Thanks So Much,

Regards
Good advice
I thought foreigners were not allowed to own property in the Phillipines?
@@golden.lights.twinkle2329 It's the wife's property!
It’s good to be king and have your own way .
Get a feeling of peace at the end of the day .
Great song Paul . Love Tom Petty Music.
🙏
Thank you Paul for the video very informative and gave a very good idea of what to expect in budgeting.
Timing is everything if you wouldn't not met your lovely Mae...ty both. I was in Malaysia when FRAUD oh. I mean cov/id19 hit I would of been in Philippines. I will not do any COVID 19 test or quarantine etc. Hopefully you and Mae me one day?
Thanks for the honest information Paul.
Your financial advisor is right, stock market is currently down. If you wait a few more year stock market should rebound and your annuity should more than double.
@@pongmolina2157 Man- Do take an early SS retirement and Run to PI- I did and if your 'frugal'. set-yourself up in a Local-like lifestyle you should be able to get-bye on Lease than $700 A month! But you gotta get a Good- poor girl that will luv ya- live in a comfortable but cheap place and you then can Hang-out at the beaches for $3-5- A day- this is my MO!
How do taxes work if you collect SSI or a pension and live overseas ? Do you need a “home base” in the states ?
@@JoeyP322 Personally whenever I go to PI I just drop out! Indeed, I did a 4-year period w/O ever coming back to the US. (Before I retired!) Since then when we do return I just access my money via my debit card. If you have relatives o friends in the US that can help with mail and whatever- you too could just drop out- many do!
Good sense on display.
@@donh5794 I pay $600 now

Very informative, i for one do enjoy the information, at some point i will be retired and full time relocated to the Philippines....and i really appreciate ALL the information needed to fully embrace all i need to know for a good start and not stumble like a blind bat at the beginning, i relocating for the climate, sick of the -40 climate i got here in Northern most sweden. Thankyou for the good information Paul, really nice to get it straight without filter ;)
Sweden! And I thought I had grown tired of the cold in the middle USA 😆. Same motivation for me and traveling to Taiwan. I can only imagine your desire to leave the cold. You know what they say "Changes in Latitude, Changes in Attitude" - Jimmy Buffet song
@@MoreFormosa indeed, i live in the same latitude as the northern most point of canada, so the cold and snow, well, lets say after 50 years of the white landscape...i think i feel the urge to live my life to the fullest in a warmer climate =) my poor arthritis would love me forever if i relocate ^^ i think you are right tho about the attitude, warmer climate i beleave, will foster a brighter mind !

I like this vid. Good budget talk here. Welldone.
In Thailand I transfer my US pension money into a Thai bank every month. In the past year the Thai Baht depreciated 11% compared to the USD. In other words I got an 11% raise this year. Thai inflation is 5%. I'm ahead 6%. I am typing this from the US; I'm here for a 3 week family visit. Prices are high for sure. Took my daughter to dinner in an Italian joint last night, pasta, lasagna and two cokes: 32 bucks with a tip. For pasta? Yup! And I'm in rural Pennsylvania, not some fancy-ass city. Yeah, $ goes a lot further in Asia, at least in Thailand.
It's about the same here in the P I. Year over year, the PHPUSD went from about 46 to 52.5! Also, got a hefty 6% Cola increase on my military retirement pension.
$32 for a sit down meal for 2 that’s cheap. Got fast food for 3 yesterday $60
Yup! 🙂 I am also enjoying life in Thailand 🇹🇭
Congrats on your incoming 5 year anniversary Paul!
