Nope. Joe has ALWAYS bailed Hunter out of trouble. That's why Hunter still hasn't grown up. At least Joe is almost out of office now. They can't peddle influence anymore.
You might also have mentioned that after he failed a drug test (cocaine) in the Navy, Hunter was "administratively" discharged from the US Navy. In a perfect world, a pardon is granted to someone who has proven he deserves one. Certainly not the case with Hunter.
I am not shocked by strange Presidental pardons. I was in my very eary 20's when Ford pardons Nixon. Many people were furious. Me too! But now I am over 70. Ford may have done that for the good of our nation. He wanted to avoid unscrupulous lawfare. That's a wise idea. We now see what such lawfare does. And how it divides the country. 😢
Ford set a bad example for all future Presidents. All that talk of “sparing the nation of a trial of President” is nonsense, nobody would have really cared. Nixon would have been held accountable and all Presidents after Nixon from both parties would have been on watch. When Ford did that, he basically let everyone know you can get away with anything.
Trump and Biden are both crooked, corrupt and rotten to the core and not much different from each others. This false dichotomy of either one or the other "one is good and the other is evil" is childish when will people wake up?!
All presidential power aside, as a parent, he should not have done this. Letting your child ( adult) have the consequences of poor choices, is importance. Tough love is also true love as it can be so painful to do, but is good in the long run. I just think that hunter’s history should have been acknowledged and that Joe should have parented properly. I hope this makes sense. 😢
Indeed it does make sense. It is the no boundaries/enabling type of parenting that Hunter received all through his life. It was sad that he lost his mother and sister so tragically and so young, and perhaps Joe loosened the parental reigns as a form of "compensation" to his young son. But that son is an ADULT and should act so and be treated so..
This is not what presidential pardons were for. As it is this just makes criminality more prevalent. Why do i follow laws if only poor people are charged.
Yeah, I can’t wait for tariffs to make everything way more expensive, great plan! Deporting everyone who picks our produce is going to backfire as well. I’m not a Dem or a Rep, I think they are all corrupt. We traded ineptitude for Authoritarian rule, and it’s going to bite us HARD.
Although a Democratic supporter, I completely agree with you and cite that as exactly one of the key reasons why we need to end Presidential pardons entirely. They are rarely, if ever, applied objectively. The abuse and conflicts of interest are only going to get more flagrant going forward from both parties.
Hilarious. Trump assigned religious conservatives to the supreme court. They overturned Roe vs Wade and put it in the states hands. Now watch in 20 years when crime skyrockets bcuz women are forced to have babies they cant take care of. Conservatives are ruining this country.
I cannot imagine that any thinking person would not have seen the pardon coming. I don’t think that that is as big of a deal as Joe’s repeated assertion that he would not do it. And for the record, I do not believe that pardons should be granted for an as yet discovered crime. In my humble opinion, if a pardon is granted, it can only be for crimes of which the person was convicted.
Personally, I think Joe did it for political reasons. If republicans want to establish the precedent that presidential pardons can get undone to get hunter, then anyone trump pardons will be up for grabs. It's not like trump isn't going to pardon a whole raft of people as soon as he gets in, with the same terms.
Who are you talking about because none of those things apply to trump except in the dark fantasy of the far left and the corrupt judges of NY. He gave tax breaks for everyone. Rich people saved more because that's how percentages work. I understand though, you've had a couple of rough weeks, losing in such convincing fashion to the "devil", so I'll give you a pass. Having your worldview being upended so quickly is tough.
Are you talking about Trump, there was no rape (even if you want there to be, the criminal trial was tossed out because the women was proved to be just a liar, the civil settlement was nonsense claiming that rape did not happen but it's possible that SA was possible, that's all that's needed in a civil case, not beyond a reasonable doubt. It was a he said/ she said, they believed her because the jury was given incredibly bizarre instructions by the democrat judge). The tax breaks were for everyone. This is the first time I have ever seen in my life people demanding the government tax everybody more, it's crazy.
Yeah it's not a good thing for the country. For what it's worth, I voted for Biden- and Harris. Against Trump though, I would have voted for a pile of used rags doused in cod liver oil; I voted for each reluctantly. I find Dr. Grande's analysis here really fascinating. I like how he points out how this is a bizarre collision of the public and the private. It's American presidential power running full speed into fatherhood. This isn't JUST political. That's interesting. Politically though, I think it's bad. President Trump mentioned the criminals responsible for January 6th in his public reaction. He referred to them as "hostages". God knows what sordid directions that will go.
Joe's "explanation" could've simply said, "I couldn't face my fear of having to see my son behind bars" & apologized to his supporters for abandoning his promise - while the pardon would still be controversial, many parents would at least empathize w/ that position. Instead, he chose to be a coward by taking no responsibility & throwing his own DOJ under the bus, thereby legitimizing all the criticisms Trump directed toward the DOJ & undermining his own party's platform.
Interesting analysis. I agree mostly. But, I feel a major factor is missing or misstated. You mentioned one of the risks Joe faced, if he had not pardoned Hunter, being further investigations and prosecution for Hunter's dealings in Ukraine. You believe Joe feared this might result in a longer prison sentence for Hunter. However, the bigger potential risk, which you didn't mention, is the potential for prosecutors to pressure Hunter to plea bargain for reduced punishment in return for info and testimony on corrupt business dealings in Ukraine. Such dealings possibly involved Joe and many other prominent figures - in the US, Europe, & Ukraine. Many people, including me, suspect that covering up these dealings was a big incentive for the pardon, in addition to fatherly concern. This speculation is not baseless. (Am I being cynical or conspiratorial?) Detailed arguments could fill a whole book. But you might have heard there's a war going on there now, and the Biden Admin is heavily involved. You might also recall our intel agencies ran an infamous censorship and disinfo op on the American public & media in 2020 to downplay & discredit questions about Hunter and his laptop. In 2019, Dem Congress collaborated with intel & military personnel to impeach Trump for prying into Biden's dealings in Ukraine. The many billions Biden spent on the war, plus the trillions of dollars of energy, minerals, & weapons markets at stake in Ukraine probably had an influence. I could be wrong. But the case is strong enough that it at least deserves mention.
He was also doing drugs and hiring hookers. Drug charges was something his father had pushed onto others to lock all those on drugs up and then did. Years and years later... Except not my son. Distraction to over look it and not mention his overseas job and deals he did for his own father.
If Republicans criticize pardoning the gun charge, I assume this means that Republicans support rigorously investigating ALL gun registration and permit documents and vigorously prosecuting gun owners for ANY false statements. Is that correct?
Actually, yeah. We don't need new gun laws or bans. We need criminals to stop getting their hands on them. Actual enforcement of the already created laws is more than enough.

I have to disagree that pardons function in a similar way to formal checks and balances. A pardon is one person picking and choosing a handful of individual cases and erasing all trace. It's not a way to correct errors made by courts or counter-balance overly punitive laws. It simply ignores them, this one time. The justice system follows a process. A pardon is its own process with no trace of "justice for all".

The issue is not that he pardoned him for the current charges which you rightly point out are minimal. In principle, this suggests that even if crimes such as treason or murder were discovered, his is immune from prosecution. This is nuts.

I am not shocked by strange Presidental pardons. I was in my very eary 20's when Ford pardons Nixon. Many people were furious. Me too!

Ford set a bad example for all future Presidents. All that talk of “sparing the nation of a trial of President” is nonsense, nobody would have really cared.
This statement can’t be said enough…..tough love!
What kind of parenting led to trump being a rapist, felon, liar?

So what? Apparently some people can excuse rape, lying and giving huge tax breaks to the rich. Crazy people.
He was running for office. Now he's not.
Well said. 🤜🤛
