    If he just pardoned him for the tax/ firearms convictions, then I would I agree with you that he was “justified”. But giving him such a vast pardon of anything and everything over a ten year period just makes them look like he knew there was more crimes. Just protecting the brand.

    I find Dr. Grande's analysis here really fascinating. I like how he points out how this is a bizarre collision of the public and the private. It's American presidential power running full speed into fatherhood. This isn't JUST political. That's interesting.
    Politically though, I think it's bad. President Trump mentioned the criminals responsible for January 6th in his public reaction. He referred to them as "hostages". God knows what sordid directions that will go.

    Joe's "explanation" could've simply said, "I couldn't face my fear of having to see my son behind bars" & apologized to his supporters for abandoning his promise - while the pardon would still be controversial, many parents would at least empathize w/ that position. Instead, he chose to be a coward by taking no responsibility & throwing his own DOJ under the bus, thereby legitimizing all the criticisms Trump directed toward the DOJ & undermining his own party's platform.

  • @Juancilra
    @Juancilra 17 часов назад +13

    Interesting analysis. I agree mostly. But, I feel a major factor is missing or misstated. You mentioned one of the risks Joe faced, if he had not pardoned Hunter, being further investigations and prosecution for Hunter's dealings in Ukraine. You believe Joe feared this might result in a longer prison sentence for Hunter. However, the bigger potential risk, which you didn't mention, is the potential for prosecutors to pressure Hunter to plea bargain for reduced punishment in return for info and testimony on corrupt business dealings in Ukraine. Such dealings possibly involved Joe and many other prominent figures - in the US, Europe, & Ukraine. Many people, including me, suspect that covering up these dealings was a big incentive for the pardon, in addition to fatherly concern. This speculation is not baseless. (Am I being cynical or conspiratorial?) Detailed arguments could fill a whole book. But you might have heard there's a war going on there now, and the Biden Admin is heavily involved. You might also recall our intel agencies ran an infamous censorship and disinfo op on the American public & media in 2020 to downplay & discredit questions about Hunter and his laptop. In 2019, Dem Congress collaborated with intel & military personnel to impeach Trump for prying into Biden's dealings in Ukraine. The many billions Biden spent on the war, plus the trillions of dollars of energy, minerals, & weapons markets at stake in Ukraine probably had an influence. I could be wrong. But the case is strong enough that it at least deserves mention.

    I have to disagree that pardons function in a similar way to formal checks and balances. A pardon is one person picking and choosing a handful of individual cases and erasing all trace. It's not a way to correct errors made by courts or counter-balance overly punitive laws. It simply ignores them, this one time. The justice system follows a process. A pardon is its own process with no trace of "justice for all".
