  • Making a Mark! Discovering the Power of Neurodiversity on a Learning Safari is a new book published by Brilliant Publications (ISBN: 9781783173518)
Presenter Kate McElderry, a learning specialist from Maryland, USA, joined us on November 14th 2023 to give an overview of this new book she has co-authored with Mark Stoddart. The book can be used in both classrooms and at home to deepen understanding of neurodiversity and learning difference.
The book is an educational resource in a story format aimed at 9-14 year olds. The book is written in story format and tells the educational journey of Mark and his neurodiverse friends. The second section provides information on how the brain works and neurodiversity and enables readers to reflect upon their own learning profiles: their strengths and challenges alike. It highlights neurodiverse learning profiles - particularly dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia and ADHD - while weaving in educational themes like grit and the growth mindset through its characters and their experiences. The book uses world-famous sculptor Mark Stoddart’s life and art as inspiration and through powerful analogies shows that learning can be adventurous and safari-like. Designed for use in the classroom or home, the book teaches students and adults about cognitive learning differences and neurodiversity. Discover how the learning resources and comic illustrations by artist, Rachel Cush, support higher level thinking skills and a growth mindset.

Such an inspiring and illuminating presentation on neurodiversity and learning. Kate’s teachings and book are transformative in guiding any family, child, or educator in navigating the winding journey of dyslexia. Her explanations are profound in their simplicity and insightful in viewing the “whole child.” She has made me a better mom and advocate for my two neurodiverse kids. Thanks, Kate for showing us the way!

A wonderful presentation by one of the world's most dynamic advocates for science-based reading instruction and an eloquent champion of neurodiversity. I read Marking a Mark as soon as it became available in the US and strongly recommend it to educators, parents and kids. Congratulations to Kate and a huge thank you for all you do. Kate McElderry is not only a gifted teacher/educator, she is an incredibly talented and creative writer. I laughed out loud when first reading the character names she came up with for the book! The book answers questions and helps shed light on neurodiversity and the dyslexic population Kate has worked with for the past 20 years. This book is an absolute gem!
