  • Pioneer DJ's line of Serato battle mixers gains a new, more affordable model in the DJM-S5. Taking design and feature cues from its more expensive stablemates, it promises to offer great performance for intermediate, hobbyist DJs. Finished in a vibrant red color, the S5 really stands out from the crowd visually - but does it justify its $800 price tag? Mojaxx gives us his thoughts in a full review.

    Thanks for this! The fact that you can use the Serato FX while playing vinyl is what really grabs me. There’s just no 2-channel mixer currently on the market with onboard FX for playing vinyl, except the really pricey ones, so this may well be an acceptable compromise.

      Are you surprised? We live in a time when the gallon sunflower oil is priced higher than a gallone of gas, which already sits on an all time high...its also the days that let you sell a kidney or your new born for a pound of flour...
      Could be very soon, that 800$ entry level mixers are our least pressing matters to deal with.

    My two cents would be for using Hip Hop, R&B, Reggae, Pop & sub genres: Echo & Reverb. House (Soulful, Deep, Nuyorican & Classics): Echo, Reverb, Flanger & Phaser. Do agree on Serato FX about getting new improved and saving configuration til this day still don't understand why they don't have the save setting so I prefer to use internal FX.

    A little detail: this mixer works in external mix mode. Numark Scratch works in internal mix mode when the switch is set to "PC", and the crossfader cuts are so soft because Serato DJ can't do it better unfortunately (we AMX users know those kind of cuts...) That's important for anyone who wants sharp cuts with Serato

    i'm not sure if USB-C is the right way going forward because USB-B is a much larger connector that's won't break as easily and can't be pulled out as easily on average. i love USB-C for everything that isn't DJ hardware but for exactly that there will have to be some sort of locking mechanism. there's no way we'll have CDJs in the future connected with USB-C cables that are out there now.

    I'm not an effects dj but a few years ago I added a pair reloop neon to my sets (2 × Numark ndx500's + Akai AMX & my dvs setup as well) . I started using Serato fx's because that was all I had, and I really liked them, the echo out in particular. Maybe I use it too much but I can't seem to stop 😆. Almost every transition I'm using echo out. Anyway I've upgraded to a Denon X1850 + SC5000m set I really miss my post fader serato fx's 😔 Even in controller mode using a ddj-xp2 the serato fx's aren't post fader. Now I know for all you serious fx's djs I've heard it all, "get a rmx 1000, denon fx are garbage, Serato fx's are trash, pioneer fx's are the greatest thing since sliced bread" Yada, Yada, yada!!!!!! like I said I'm not a big fx's dj, serato fx's give me all I need.

I would not be surprised if we start seeing the MUCH needed return of color and personality to do DJ gear going forward. It works really well. I just select echo or delay and I can dial in the BPM and pretty much leave it if I am playing similar tempo stuff. I've been using a Xone:92 mixer for years but feel nervous using a laptop for anything in a live environment so have always used external FX units in my set up. But I own a pub and recently bought the Pioneer XDJ-RX2 to use there so was excited to use on-board FX in the mixer section and have to say it was a bit lacklustre for me. It's also my 1st time ever using a Pioneer digital filter and with my ears being used to the Xone filter, I was actually quite shocked as to how bad the Pioneer filter was.
    But I recently re-bought an EFX-1000 unit (which I traded in for the RMX-1000 upon release & regretted it) and that unit is STILL the peak of Pioneer EFX if you ask me. Having the freedom to use effects freely & not tied to a beat is so refreshing.........and to answer your question Mojax the WAH effect from the 2004 EFX sounds much better than the filter effect on the XDJ-RX2. Also on the 2004 (almost 20yrs old now) is the kill switch options for low/mid/high on the beat effect section. This disappeared after this and has only just started to reappeared on the recent high end expensive mixers. This is an amazing feature and can't understand why this was not implemented in the DJM mixers after 2004 as should have been easy to do.
    >So kill switches on the mixer anyway but defo kill switches for the effects
    >Better filters on Pioneer gear
    >using a touch strip or something so effects can be used freely & not tied to the beat

    • @Mojaxx

      The 900NXS2 did get the FX frequency switches, thankfully. And on a lot of more recent Pioneer DJ stuff you can add some high-pass to different FX, which is what I’m always looking for.
      But totally with you on the EFX-1000! The RMX line is very cool but just doesn’t work with a lot of hardware, as it’s insert only.
      I still use my EFX-500 quite often, which has terrible sound compared to the EFX-1000, but I balk at the price of decade-old (or older) 1000s on the used market.

    I don’t normally post negative comments but I have to say that in trying to be a bit different in the look of this one, Pioneer made some odd choices. The cross fader reverse and curve controls should be dedicated buttons/switches in the same way they are on the s3. They took up a load of redundant space on the front of the mixer with the tension adjust ‘inner workings’ when they could have put the CF reverse and curve controls there instead. The scratch cutter is a beginner feature but it’s a mid-range price point and with a high quality crossfader (Magvel pro not standard Magvel) like the S7/9/11, I’m not sure who it’s aimed at. If it’s potential Numark Scratch users, then you’re paying an extra £300. Yes, there are more features but I’m not convinced it’s worth the extra. The faceplate colour? Not a fan - it just cheapens the look imo. Black should at least be an option. I think the s3, s7 and s11 were all appropriately priced and obvious upgrades from each other but the s5 feels a weird mix of some upgrades but some odd choices that make it feel and look more budget than it should be. Nope, not for me this one.

    themselves. Going back to what I use, I have per side a delay, delay t3 and beatmasher, in this order, on one FX rack, and on the
    second per side I use the Xone filter emulation with a custom mapping on my X1 to switch from insert to postfader, plus the mixer FX
    on the S4 MK3, namely Reverb, Barber Pole, Crush and I tend to switch between Noise and Time Gate. I'm interested to experiment

    You serato DJ's are missing the one important thing that Numark doesn't allow you to do, and that's using the effects when spinning Vinyl. That's huge if you're a Vinyl DJ that occasionally uses serato. And, the faders on the Numark don't stand a chance for those that like to cut. And sorry to say, Numark isn't what they used to be in the 90's. Pioneer is keeping up with DJ's, and listening to what they want. So if your only complaint is the price, you're looking for cheap, not quality.

    As someone who launched the Numark Scratch (before covid), this mixer still does not capture the low end market for the money. With Numark Scratch for $500 you get all of this (DJ essentials) with Serato DJ Pro. The extra $300 with no onboard efx is a complete waste of design. No DJ ever wanted a USB C power, nobody asked for that. So as a former Numark employee, Pioneer DJ “hedge fund” engineers (yes men) please try again.

    • @AprendeScratching
      @AprendeScratching 2 года назад +4

      Well, I agree the price is so high, but about the waste of design... the advantages against the Numark Scratch are:
      - Magvel Fader Pro (it seems some Mini Innofader units had too much non-fixable dead space for crabs an other types of scratches, it should had included a Mini Innofader Pro at least)
      - no soft cuts when using Serato (Numark Scratch works in internal mix mode when the switch is set to PC in a channel, it's a problem Serato never fixed in its internal mix)
      - more pads functionality (access to 5-8, and other ones like scratch bank)
      - Post-crossfader FX even with analog sources (the Numark Scratch has post-crossfader FX from and for Serato and nothing FX for analog sources but the filter, I personally love to use echo sometimes when cutting)
      - portable option (because the USB power source, I'm sure portablists will use it in the streets)
      - Aux in (if you use two turntables with the Numark Scratch you can't plug in a smartphone with a looper without unpluging one turntable... really, Numark, really?)
      In my opinion, the Numark Scratch went too far to be low cost, and the S5 too high to be "hobbyst". It's a pity there isn't a half way option between them.

    • @OT83
      @OT83 2 года назад

      @@AprendeScratching I agree on the post fader efx on analog for Numark Scratch. But the point here for the entry level is to give them what they paid for. So essentially like learning how to ride a bike you just need to pedal and brake. For us more experienced guys/gals we want more so we upgrade to the next level.
      You are right about the market place as there is still opportunity for a mixer in the $500 - $800. With maybe onboard efx and Innofader pro.

    • @bvee9202
      @bvee9202 2 года назад

      Agreed. To add, its only $100-200 less than the s7, which has onboard effects, and 8 pads per channel. Not sure why anyone would choose this at a $900 price point.

    • @AprendeScratching
      @AprendeScratching 2 года назад +1

      @@OT83 That's true, I think this mixer can't fit the entry level. I guess it fits the _kind-of-wealthy_ hobbyst people 😂
      But I think there is another option at the entry level. Although I've read bad comments about the Magvel Fader (the "little" brother), I own a DJM-250MK2 and... it does the job. Ok, it's true: has no pads, no FX controls (not even post-crossfader FX), but you can learn to cut with it, at least with my unit, with a pretty decent dead space (about 1 mm) and a nice cut. Rekordbox instead of Serato, but I feel its DVS works really nice (after re-callibrating it in the Rekordbox setup, before that it sucks a little bit with slow drags). Unless it happens to be that nowadays other Magvel Fader units go wrong or something, for 350$/€ I think it's a good mixer for entry level. Perhaps with a big lack of controls, that's right. Same for the S3, but with Serato and +100~140$/€ more 😁
      And Mixars seems to be dead, so I think it's dangerous to get some of their remaining Duos from the shops.
