I'm with ya, man! This is one of my favorite albums of all time and most definitely my favorite album of the '80's. I saw them perform this album in it's entirety in '89 while they were touring in support of Metallica on their Justice for All tour. One of the best shows I've ever seen.
Operation Mindcrime is a masterpiece of an album from start to finish. It deserves to be listened to in its entirety to fully appreciate the story it tells.
Definitely must be listened to in its entirety. Hard to believe it's been over 30 years and the album seems just as relevant today as it did at release.
Such a great track and amazing album, start to finish. Really Geoff Tate, Chris DeGarmo & Michael Wilton at the peak of composition as a band. While i love Empire, the feel of this album just never gets old and is the one i go back to the most often. Chris doesn't get enough credit for his vocal harmonies with Geoff, especially live. My college roommate and I had the deal on this one that I'd buy it on vinyl, since it was available first at Tower Records and then he bought the CD a few days later, just so we didn't have to wait to hear it. Such a hard album to pick one track from with it being such a great concept with most tracks leading into the next. I guess I'll have to listen to it again on my drive home tonight! :) A favorite deep track off the QR EP is The Prophecy, if you are looking for other QR down the road - ruclips.net/video/AxVmkmNcAi4/видео.html Thanks very much for the reaction!
Let's talk about how prophetic this album was. As I told my nephew this month, this band described the intersection of fake news, cult of personality and anarcho-revolution driven by a generation lacking vision and turning to drugs and violence and demagoguery. They literally described our current state 30 years before it happened.
I disagree with one thing. This might have been moving toward their commercial peak, but this band brought it from the very beginning. Prophecy, Queen of the Reich and, especially, The Lady Wore Black, from the EP, are as good as any songs the band ever put out.
"Religion and Sex are power plays Manipulate the people for the money they pay Selling skin or Selling God The Numbers look the same on the Credit Cards" I still get chills when I hear that one. The other that is great IMO, is "Revolution Calling": "I used to think that only America's way, way was right! But now the Holy Dollar rules everybody's lives! Gotta Make a million doesn't matter who dies! Revolution Calling Revolution Calling YOU!"
Eddie Jackson is one of the most underrated bassists in metal much less in general. His Spector NS-2 with EMGs sound set the tone for heavy rock ever since.
Don't forget his background vocals too. Many Ryche songs would not be what they are without his harmonies in the low/mids and then Chris's high harmonies. I always lusted after a Spector and never could afford one BITD, but then it would have been wasted on a guitar player.:)
Chris DeGarmo has called what Eddie does as "Ed World". Spector through an Ampeg. You can't lose with that combo. Rivals early Geddy Lee or Gene Simmons for tone \m/
Back in the day, I would've sold my soul to have his bass sound. I actually contacted Spector to see how much it would cost to build me a left-handed version of his bass,, and (if I remember correctly) the quote was close to $6,000.
@@lockstar169 "rivals Geddy..." absurd. dude is not even in the same conversation with Geddy and his Rickenbacker. seriously, stop being silly. because one is an actual genius.

Such a great blast from the past, you are right this song flows into the next. This whole album is a concept album that flows from song to song with no real breaks between songs. This was a big part of my soundtrack of life back in the late 80s.
Just going to echo what I've seen a lot in the comments: This album as a whole is an absolute masterpiece and one of my favorite concept albums period. Even if you don't do reaction videos for it, you should give the album a listen through at least once.
Chris DeGarmo is the second voice you hear. Je sang harmony. Back up, and in certain songs the second lead . As well as Michael Wilton, and Ed' Jackson sang back ups as well
Masterpiece! I grew up listening to this thanks to my pops and got to see them perform this album in its entirety when mindcrime 2 came out. Fantastic.
Oh God, I really love Queensryche I've been with them from the very beginning in the 80's. I talk about music being transformational for me, and this is one of the band's songs that does it for me, along with so many other's I have picked this song on my playlist but deleted because it's so personal to me and I chose instead Eyes of a stranger. Thank you Geebz so much for your analysis of this song. You are so phenomenal in your dissection of the music. Just amazing! 💜

You forgot Another Rainy Night and Anybody Listening. Which is why I would put it as their best. I would also put the EP up close. With a limited song selection, it still has three of their top ten songs alltime.
As others have said, this album is a masterpiece. also as others have said, it should be listened to in its entirety to truly appreciate it. I have always wanted to write a movie based on this album and of course use it as the soundtrack.

I drowned many a breakup in beer to this album... I can still taste it! Also, I saw Queensryche in 2002 on tour with Dream Theater and Fates Warning, and the three singers did the encore together!! You should do some Fates Warning, Geebz, especially if you listen to the vocals as their own instrument, Ray Alder is your man! The song One would be a great intro
Sorry, Ray is good, but not even the best vocalist in his own band. John Arch is and always has been better. And, he is the only person I know who could nearly match Geoff Tate.
I'm no composer, sound engineer, mixer, or musician, but this album is perfectly mixed so you hear everything so clearly. The song is great as a stand alone, but to be truly appreciated, it needs to be listened to in the context of the whole album, as it is a chapter in a bigger story. When this album came out, my friends and I listened to it non-stop for a very long time. Musical genius and perfection.
Chris DeGarmo is a very underrated guitar player. His solos are the most complex, but are some of the most melodic of the era. My favorite solo "Another Rainy Night". That song is constructed pretty similar to this one, but the solo really takes it to a new level.
First - love that you did some 'Ryche. Awesome band. Awesome album. Second - would love to see some Zappa but it doesn't surprise me that they block his vids. They won't even let Dweezil use the name.

Great album! Check out the track Suite Sister Mary for something in less of a pop song format and more of a long-form progressive arrangement, complete with creepy choral chanting! Awwright!
Great reaction 👍 I would suggest you listen to the whole album from front to back. It tells a great story/murder mystery about Nikki and Suite Sister Mary vs Professor X. Killer album! How about hitting some Dio for your throwback thursday next week? Maybe something like "We Rock" or "Last in Line"? I have seen other reactors react to Zappa recently, so that would be great as well :). Keep up the good work
I tell E.V.E.R.Y.O.N.E. That loves Queensryche, to check out Fates Warning if they can. Kyrie Eleison, Eye To Eye, Point Of View all KILLER tracks.... And every time I mention Kyrie Eleison, my brain automatically has to suggest Annihilator - Alison Hell.
Just so u know we are all fans of the band and obviously geoff tate's musical abilities. Heard him when i was 16 and saw them after mindcrime. Saw them on the Empire tour. They give you your moneys worth at a show. Keep up the work. I appreciate your insight. Mat you have a happy and safe new yr.
You definitely have to check out the entire Mindcrime album, if you haven't. They even performed the entire album several times and put it out live. "Operation:Livecrime"
Thank you for this video! I have an idea for another one: 'Rose im Winter' by Saltatio Mortis. A german band with a really interesting arrangement in my opinion. Have a great day!
Eyes of a Stranger was also a big one for them off that same album. Funny you mention Zappa, The guitarist Denny Walley taught me how to swim when I was a kid by throwing me in the deep end of the pool !! I asked "why did you do that" when i got to the side of the pool and he said "See , you can swim"!! LOL My Godfather Don Hanover raised and sold rare parrots from his parents property in Encino. He has sold birds to many people in bands, actors, etc..... Some was just business, some became friends and Denny was one of them. Great guy from what i remember of him.
@@ba_charles I only remember him cause of the pool, had he not done that.. I would have never known who he was. I only remember seeing him 2-3 times at parties when i was really young. Hard to miss his huge head of hair.. pictures do it no justice! lol
“No chance for contact There's no raison d'etre My only hope is one day I'll forget...” Before Google.... Met a girl who took French in college. Good times. Lol.
Chris DeGarmo was the primary background vocalist of the band and was responsible for almost all the higher notes in their vocal harmonies. Just phenomenal vocals from top to bottom during that era.
This album is like religion for myself and many others. The story, the intensity, the everything about it. Just a unique masterpiece 🙌

I believe Chris Degarmo (Lead Guitar) did many of the high vocal back up tracks. He did them live as well.
Yep, Tate's natural voice is a mid level baritone that can be pushed fairly high, but Degarmo's voice is softer and higher.
Correct.
Tate did most of his own harmonies on the albums. DeGarmo helped out live.
Yes he did and also live.
You are correct. Since he wrote most of those song lyrics, it make sense that he would have a large part in how they sounded.

Glad you spun this song. Great thinking man and thinking man's band. Geoff is a cool man....many meet n greets. They've been my go.to.band and songs for 30 plus years...the ups and downs....from roads to.madness to promised land.... liquid sky....to current...the fight....broken....child of fire!
Great album! Check out the track Suite Sister Mary for something in less of a pop song format and more of a long-form progressive arrangement, complete with creepy choral chanting! Awwright!
Karnivool! New Day! Karnivool! New Day! Karnivool! New Day!
Keep up the good work
Best concept album ever. You have to listen to in it's entirety
Woot woot!!!! :D Deep Purple lol Great song and great video. Have a happy.
Agreed. Fates is amazing.
Saw QR open for KISS for The Warning album. QR blew KISS away. Might have something to do with the spandex KISS decided to go with.
Great guy from what i remember of him.
iirc Denny Walley got kicked out of Zappa's band for being too good
@@ba_charles I only remember him cause of the pool, had he not done that.. I would have never known who he was. I only remember seeing him 2-3 times at parties when i was really young. Hard to miss his huge head of hair.. pictures do it no justice! lol
“No chance for contact
There's no raison d'etre
My only hope is one day I'll forget...”
Before Google.... I spent the summer of 1988 asking EVERYBODY what raison d’etre meant, I was 20 years old and dumb as a rock. Finally, it was during a lost weekend visiting a buddy of mine up in Wisconsin. Met a girl who took French in college. Good times. Lol.
Chris DeGarmo was the primary background vocalist of the band and was responsible for almost all the higher notes in their vocal harmonies. Just phenomenal vocals from top to bottom during that era.
Siraly - Thy Catafalque
Blood on the Tightrope - Lunatic Soul
Where is now - David Maxim Micic
