  • You can't come to Malaysia without having Nasi Lemak, and my local friend took me to one of Kuala Lumpur's most iconic chicken and Nasi Lemak places, Village Park Restaurant.
    The next stop was at a hidden mom and pop restaurant that makes a specialty that's rare to find in Malaysia, and that's beggar's chicken. To get it, you have to make your order a day in advance, and the cooking process is exceptionally unique like no other.
    Crazy enough, this chicken that I'm eating was covered in mud and cooked in the ashy dirt to achieve its tender, juicy flavor. I also ordered the pork and sticky rice dishes that underwent the same process, and they were equally, mind-blowingly, delicious!

    Here in Europe we have an almost identical way of cooking trout to that beggar's chicken. It's a traditional way of cooking, when you are up in the mountains fishing and you don't have many utensils with you. You clean the fish, then you wrap it in leaves and you pack it in mud and then throw it in some charcoal and cover it. It takes much less time than a whole chicken, maybe an hour or two and it tastes absolutely delicious...

      yea we here in Austria normaly cook potatoes and sausages this way. I live next to the danue (big river that crosses many countries of Europe ) and this method ist typical to cook food on the rivers beaches. During a party or fishing.

    I'e eaten many dishes from cuisines all over the world and echoing a recent video lamb biryani is almost at the top of the list, but beaten hands down by beef rendang for my vote as the best dish in the world. Cooked for hours and hours, the beef melts in the mouth. Shame that your taste of rendang was just a bite and moved on to next dish. Rendang is legendary.

    • @ryanfiesta1135
      @ryanfiesta1135 6 лет назад +1

      Sean H it is not the real rendang bro, of course he moved away, no offence to all my friends in Malaysia, but you guys should learn how to cook proper rendang before call it your own,,real rendang is come from padang west Sumatra,

    • @ahvin4764

    For years, I've cooked 'hot and fast'. Sometimes, though, that method doesn't give the best results. Lately, I've been going, 'low and slow', and been amazed at the results, Both have a place in cuisine. I wonder how the clay coated foods compare to salt-crusted? Awesome food tour, Mike!

    • @sucrefleischer5173

      I've heard of a type of northern european food (icelandic I think?) where they literally cook it in dung (ie poop). Heard about it from the episode where mike is talking to man v food guy eating hot pot.

    • @choyjoonkit
      @choyjoonkit 6 лет назад

      Clay cooking locks the flavour and moisture fully.
      Salt coated method are mostly used in grilling or high temperature cooking as the salt withstand high temperature while keeping the moisture in the food.
