When I first saw this episode I had my own thought that the Emperor meant for Consort Yu that she is not his in respect to the fact she had not only shamed and lost her face but also the Emperor’s. And any troubles she commits as Forbidden City’s Consort Yu will no longer be attached to the Emperor and thus stain his reputation. Since she was also a part of maintaining the Royal Family and Palace’s good image and reputation.
Since Consort Yu was from a Mongolian banner, the emperor has to keep her alive to keep the alliance. He can break up with her but can’t throw her out of the palace or kill her because her family would be upset. In order to keep the peace, he keeps her alive for political backing from her family.
