Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8, Houston Hobby HOU Miami International Airport MIA, Trip Report

  • This is a domestic flight trip report from William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) in Houston Texas to Miami International Airport in Miami Florida on Southwest Airlines 1639 (plane model: Boeing 737 MAX 8; N8796L) that departed at 10:52 a.m. US Central Time. It was a full flight (all seats were occupied).
    Snacks and drinks were partially served due to unknown/spotty turbulence throughout the Gulf of Mexico. Flight attendants were not able to get up and serve due to the captain order. Once the plane arrived near the coast of Florida (near Tampa area), the captain allowed flight attendant to move around the cabin. Passengers at the front row were able to get snacks and drinks, but everyone else from the middle to the back were not served.

    14:15 WOW! The pilots took off with just enough room in the nick of time. I say that because you can see the opposite runway threshold as the plane took off. Absolutely incredible. Great review like always so far by the way!

      SWA calculates stopping margin for every takeoff based on runway length and condition code, weight, flap and thrust setting, current METAR and a whole list of other variables. If there hadn't been sufficient stopping margin to allow a reject at V1 they wouldn't have been authorized to attempt that takeoff. It's never a question of "just in the nick of time" It may look that way to a casual observer, but it's not. Ever.

      @@thanos8039 I'm saying SWA crews calculate available stopping margin for a rejected takeoff prior to leaving the gate using actual weight and real time conditions. Every. Single. Time. They will never initiate a takeoff if there is not sufficient runway to allow a reject at V1 (we don't use the term abort anymore)
      If the runway assignment is changed by ATC after pushback, we are required to stop the airplane, brief the performance numbers for the new runway (along with any changes to engine out turn specials, SID transitions etc) and run another checklist. If ATC turns the airport around and we hadn't requested performance data for the reciprocal runways, we have to request all new performance data and ensure sufficient stopping margin for a reject at V1 on the new runway. Every. Single. Time.
      Also, keep in mind Vr can be quite a big after V1, and sitting in the cabin, you have no way to tell. SWA procedure is for the PM to call V1 5 kts prior to calculated V1 in order to ensure the PF does in fact initiate the reject PRIOR to or AT V1, to ensure legality and to meet stopping margin requirements.
      So it may look like there was "0 runway left" but there was. Or the crew couldn't have legally initiated the takeoff.

      @@thanos8039There is never enough runway for an aborted takeoff at V2 rotate, no matter the situation. At that point it’s takeoff and return. The pilots are only authorized to abort takeoffs until V1 which is about half the runway. This 737 was cutting it a little close though, must’ve been the short runway at Hobby airport.

    Now I know SWA carries a LOT of people every day all across the USA but for them to upgauge to a 787? Wow! SWA made a smart investment! :) Sarcasm over--enjoyed those landings at HOU before your launch--wondering if HOU was a one-runway operation that day? I was hoping for a high-altitude shot of Galveston and I believe you were close, just as you were about to cross I-45, you cut to the turbulence cabin shot. Never have been to Florida much less Miami and am in no hurry. No doubt you're here to document Miami light rail /bus operations and hopefully we'll be treated to trip reports about Brightline which I believe goes to Orlando. AA pretty much owns MIA and am glad you chose to give your business to their competitor on this route--wish you could've continued on to MDW!
