- On November 6, 1986, a Boeing-Vertol Model 234LR Chinook helicopter returning workings from the Brent oilfield crashed on approach to land at Sumburgh Airport in the Shetland Islands. At 2.5 mi (4.0km) from the runway the helicopter had a catastrophic forward transmission failure which caused the tandem rotor blades to collide. The helicopter crashed in to the sea and sank. Forty-three passengers and two crew members were killed in the crash; one passenger and one crew member survived with injuries.
The 1986 Sumburgh Chinook Helicopter Disaster took place November 6th, 1986 and the plane was a Boeing-Vertol Model 234LR Chinook Helicopter. The registration was G-BWFC. The plane was carrying 47 occupants, 44 passengers and 3 crew members. 2 occupants survived. The main cause was a Mechanical Failure.
