Soooo...your driving along briskly and you can't change out of 3rd gear?
Here why, the selector moves to far over 3rd gear and lets the keys pop out and prevent the selector from moving.
Broken parts are the selector fork as it has to be forced out which brakes the roll pin.
You can't get certain replacement parts such as selector keys and selector fork arms so not much else to do bar replace the entire box or get another box and use that for parts.
This is a common issue and the gearboxes affected are all 020 rod change gearboxes

After doing the same mk2 abf engine i put a 020 box off a mk3 golf td no issues after 6 years

Is the low oil 5th gear issue solvable on the 020 2Y gearboxes, can’t use the 5th gear

To be fair I've not heard of any low oil issues on the 2Y box
