To put it another way this setting is supposed to have existed outside of the normal world for decades. Any cultural references should be from like the the 70's or even earlier
While what you are saying is a perfectly reasonable point; its almost not relevant. The flags are not in there as part of world building etc...it is inserted at a meta level beyond the scope of the 'game world'. So yes, you are right, however it doesn't address the problem.
I'm a very progressive person myself and I think we should be respectful towards everyone, but I have to agree that the flags do seem out of place given the time period and the setting.
I think if they added a few and they balanced it with various other flags representing all groups it would seem less odd but as it stands they are giving a huge amount of real estate to a very specific political issue that has nothing to do with the rest of the game.
There are more than enough legitimate platforms to discuss these issues, and they already get a lot of airtime. I play games like these to unplug, destress and immerse myself in fictional worlds. I'll still play this one but this design decision is just plain socially awkward and weird. It's like some kind of virtue signaling, or perhaps the devs are just trying to create buzz their controversy. Either way, it doesn't look great and it probably hurts the cause more than it helps it.
I played the game blind for about a good 10 hours and what I've seen doesn't add up. People have different ways of playing and enjoying content. I like the dialog, and because it gives context to the world your in. The game takes skill to play. The skill is in how to locate the right loot and hazard type. The game punishis you for not planning ahead. It can be very hard on longer trips.
The absolute *amount* of flags is a little dumb, I agree. But more than anything, this is set in 1995, so pride flags is out of place in that regard too. It's like how by default there's a bunch of Mass Effect stuff in the sims 4. it's... out of place.
@@ruski77 I'm not hung up on anything, the game is on my wishlist and I'm buying it the instant I'm able to. I'm going to play the hell out of Pacific Drive and enjoy it the whole time.
Also, I'm genderfluid and like identity flags. I have one on my wall at this very moment.
None of this in any way changes my opinion that having over 20 of them off the bat in a game where that doesn't make sense is suddenly a good idea.
@@arkgaharandan5881 It isn't even actual representation, it's just a thinly veiled attempt by corporate to add "that flag fad" to the game so appeal to the genderqueer community.
A rainbow flag by itself would be so much better, because it wouldn't break immersion, and then you have space for the Cascadian flag which was made *in* 1995 and would be perfect.
There's plenty of good representation in games, Celeste is a damn near perfect representation of being trans. But just doing it for a quick corporate appeal is insulting almost.
@@arkgaharandan5881 I wouldn't call Pacific Drive an indie game, it feels polished and big in scope, with some noticeable jank, and console porting. So it's probably from a mid-tier studio.
Also I said corporate, not corporations. I'm referring to like the marketing team and the decision head in charge of the studio.
the gazillion gay and skin color flags made my eyes roll so bad they almost popped out but everything else that is game mechanics based was pretty much wrong.
im not going to touch on dialog and controls as thats too subjective.
the tourists arent interested in you, they are interested in light.
if you are holding a flare theyll swarm you but if you throw one in the middle of a pack of them and look away theyll swarm it.
its a cool mechanic that makes you turn off the lights if you suspect they are nearby so they dont swarm your car.
also saying that they dont do anything shows how little you interacted with the game.
if you tilt them or throw a lit flare at them they explode, its literally the only way to get thermosap early game semi consistently.
throw a lit flare into the middle of them
look away a few times until you are happy with the crowd
throw a lit flare at one and get rained upon with plastic and thermosap

I completely agree with you on the addition of these flags, and everything said about them in this video. But I’m curious as to why it would be a dealbreaker to you? They are really just a small addition to the game which can easily be ignored.

With so many games around these days, so many good games, it’s a lot easier to give something a miss due to small things.
23 flags is a statement, and that’s fine. I’m happy to give it a miss, god knows I’m tired of game characters that never shut-up and sounds like this is a problem here too. I’m sure they’ll get good sales for this game, not sure how many of them will be using those flags though.

Can we say that the flags earned them any sales? No, Not really. Can we say that those 23 flags indeed did cost them sales? well, judging by this comment section id say the flags once discovered indeed did do more harm then it did good and infact did Cost them sales, several. and those add up.

Game takes place back in 1998. Those flags were not even thought of back then. That is definitely an immersion breaker and I wish I knew about it before buying the game. Too bad there is not an accessibility option for normal people who don't care about any of that crap that will disable things like that.
the accessibility feature is built in actually! if u just go to the detailing station and pick another decal u won’t have to see those. also gay ppl existed before 1998 and had flags!

I like your input but there are several holes in your description of things, for example the tourist mannequins do exactly as you say, but they also have variants that explode when your character or car touch them, they throw resources and tools at you occasionally, and some can be blown up on purpose to collect some mid game resources. Not imperfect, but I believe you ignored some of the smaller details that the game has that I believe make it a bit stronger than your review. Thank you for your thoughts!
Where's my straight flag? Why am I always underrepresented? Then I become the bad guy when I want download a mod from Nexus Mods to remove all these worthless flags that don't represent me. Why am I the one that has to justify my existence? Maybe Instead of having over 20 different flags to try to make people happy, let us customize our own decals how about that? Once you let me add/remove/download or customize these options then I'll think of considering checking this game out. I would love to support The PNW but F off with the flags. I didn't like it in fallout, I don't like it here.

Bare in mind that I'm not trying to criticise you or anything, but the main reason for the various pride flags is that these are people who have always felt rejected from society, not allowed to be who they are. Straight people have been the cultural norm, and statistically still are, so straight people don't usually feel a huge sense of pride as they haven't had to overcome any adversity to be who they are in peace. Nobody comes out as straight, if you see what I mean.
When it comes to the setting, I agree that maybe limiting it to the historically accurate single pride flag would be fine. But the game itself is enough fun that I'm not gonna bother getting my knickers in a twist for some stickers that I'll be replacing fairly regularly with whatever new sticker I've found.
All in all these stickers are an easily ignorable and small part of the game, and represent an effort to just be nice to some people who don't get many wins in life.

I kinda agree about the whole "Flags are to much and unnecessary" But 1st thing i thought of was "well, the car is a remnant... and it trys to adapt to you? So? Fine? why not?" But at this point WHY NOT let the player just PAINT a flag of their liking, i mean now instead of 23 gay flags, YOU HAVE ALL OF THEM (and any other thing you want that isnt a falg)! And then just add some designs of your own on top.

I love The Long Drive and I thought this game would be something similar to that (with a story and a different setting) but seeing that the car upgrades and repairs aren't as tactical as The along Drive I'm a little sad
I feel like there was a boatload of cut content for the game.

As someone who is a big supporter of people including inclusivity in games and media, even I feel like the number here sounds excessive. Not because the people should not feel represented, but because it takes up so much of the customization real-estate when so many cultures and identities may not be included. This could be alleviated by having the flags in their own LBGTQIA+ section, so that it can be expanded and everyone can be present, or by having a general pride rainbow flag, and then providing a means through which people could get their individual flags if they want it. Such as through Workshop, or some sort of download and put it in a folder option.
That being said, there may be room for a discussion here. While this is a game to me, it is art in it's own way, and there may be cultural value in using your art, as the developer, to bringing the breadth of identities to the fore. Not just so people who identify feel represented, but also so that people who think exclusively in binaries might be exposed to a broader discussion in a non-confrontational manner.

@@jokinplaysgames because the developer gets to say what messages, statements, or demonstrations they make through their creation, so clearly that option isn't one they chose. As a result I was addressing the reality of the situation.
And yes, then you have the choice not to buy it. That's fine, the dev almost certainly knew that was an option when they decided to make a statement. Perhaps they even thought that was a good thing, I can't say.
So skip wasting resources on the detailing station.. got it. And yea this isn't a genre evolving title or story-of-the-year, but when you just want to do a run or two when you have the time this could be scratch to an itch.

im getting a lot of bugs on ps5 version i craft tools they dont show up i need too craft 3 4 times for it to register and give it to me tools randomly drop need to always backtrack to find them sometimes its in my hand but doesn't have the tool icon in quick slot then i change to something els and try to go back to it and its gone. also spare tires are beyond repair and it says i need some sort of tool i make it then go back to the tires and it says the weel is to destroyed for repair like wtf most of my resources wasted for stupid crap like that. and many more bugs. but the worst thing about the game by far is night time its hell every 15 seconds no jokes theres something destroying you or your car its very bad trying to do anything at night to the point were i dat to make nights quicker in game settings because i almost threw controller of the balcony its rough beware of it guys but after all that 30 fps on ps5 still boggles me why the game doesn't even look next gen it could run on a ps4 easily no question about it its not 4k no way i got a 65inch Lg c1 and games look incredible on it and tont start with that oh its the art directions they using no way the game looks 1080p to 1440 dont think its 4k especially when ps4 games look better in some cases also lode in rocks and trees dont look good sometimes it looks like nintendo switch graphics on certain things but relax guys when game works properly its good going around finding loot and crafting system is pretty big its a 7.5 out of 10 for me and i wasn't even on the hype train i saw it few month back and they mentioned it was coming to pc i just hope they fix the issues soon and hopefully we get 60fps then it might go up to 8 even 8.5
Those aren’t bugs your experiencing, they are a misunderstanding of the game’s general mechanics with how it handles inventory.
Carrying inventory “in your hands” won’t show in your inventory directly. & when you change hot keys or items it will drop it to the ground.
I almost bought that game until I seen all those fucking flags. Glad I seen this video so I didn't get tricked into giving these kind my money.
wow, love this video... subscribed just because we both had the discerning eye... already spent the money on the game before the discovery of the alphabet mafia propaganda. still like the game, but i'm glad somebody's called out the break in the fantasy land.
I wish I had watched this review before I bought the game. The loop is so boring, the upgrades are tedious and the story kinda sucks. It is not a fun game you want to play after a long day of work.

Someone actually said it. It didnt ruin the game for me, my best friends gay. But i got like 2 options for stickers that arent pride flags! Got 50 hrs in and finished story, would still recommend for a turn off your brain kinda game
thank you so much for drawing attention to this ridiculous political activism in video games. I will not play a video game that doubles as activism for a political stand. It doesn't matter what political stand it is, and it doesn't matter whether I disagree or agree with the stand. I appreciate you pointing this out before I drop my 25 or so bucks on this game. I will not be purchasing this game now. I want political activism out of my video games. It was the last bastion of hope for all of us to have some escapism from that crap, because that's why most of us game, isn't it? We don't even have movies or TV anymore, but those have been lost for a long time. activism in video games has now become the norm, sadly.
Even, and I've noticed especially, in these little indie games. I believe that by putting that stuff in the game they will get more positive impressions from the bigger ticket reviewers. You can look at the trends and see that this is often the case with these indie games. You would think that with indie games you could maybe find something that doesn't have to be about that. but the truth is, the game developer industry is bullying everyone out of it who isn't a hardcore activist for that political side. And the saddest part is that they're all losing money because it happens to be the people on the other political side, the non-derelict class, who has the money and who grew up playing video games.
Would love a playthrough of this (just to see how bad it can get later in the game) XD

I'm all for sexual identities and whatnot, but, yeah, maybe it could have been a free DLC or something. I think "jarring" describes pretty well how I felt checking out the customization stuff in the demo. I'm totally in support of people expressing themselves or being allies or whatever, but, yeah, maybe a "pride flags" free DLC would have been the way to go.
Appreciate the review, no other review I've watched so far has mentioned the mass of 'identity flags'. For the devs / designers to cram them in there, just why? I play games to escape the real world and it's bullshit. Seems like the NPCs endless dribble will get old real quick.

I really wanted to give this one a go. I've been sitting here looking at a dozen reviews bringing me to this one. No one else brought up the thing about the flags. FFS, there is no goddamn escape. While it's not in your face with "THE MESSAGE," it's still a "oh, by the way... here's some ego-identity BS you can put on your car - even though most of that shite didn't exist in the 90s." So basically... they're just another anomaly in the exclusion zone. I think I'll use my $20 and buy some mushrooms instead.
