- Happy NaNoWriMo everyone! We are done with week 1 and the initial struggle to start, and we are now fully in the wing of things. Week 1 was a bit of a wild ride for me. I struggled quite a bit near the beginning but now things are finally starting to click into place! I am ending week 1 with just over 14k words. How is NaNoWriMo going for you?
Thank you so much for watching!

As someone who struggles with first drafts, and specifically starting a first draft, I f e l t this one in my s o u l.
"I don't know how to write."
"Nothing is good. I hate all of it. I hate everything I've written."
- Me every day. 😩
My first sentence is a bunch of curse words. Lol. My main character has a potty mouth. I hate everything I’ve written except that sentence. It sums up everything. We are in the same boat.
That's good. I struggle with beginnings as well. I make sure to NOT listen to any music before I write, as music throws me off. It takes me from a calm state to an energetic one. I've long surpassed the problem with chucking a paragraph or page out if I'm not happy with it. I used to savor my word count. Now it's a click to destruction. With my first draft, I try to rob it of its gems and start over. If I can't start, I describe a place I enjoy or have enjoyed like at the botanical garden or walk certain places in my city. After that, I try to write the beginning.
I NEEDED this today. I am doing Nano and writing my first book and it is AWFUL. I hate it it's terrible and I want to throw my computer out the window most of the time. But then I will get an epiphany and I realize, like you said. It is all a process and this it the process. Thank you for this, it makes me feel much less alone in my crazy writing process!! :)
Thank you so much for your comment!! We are in this because we love it and we may hate what we write but we have to remember this is the first draft and those are never perfect!! Give yourself some grace 💛
One of the best pieces of writing advice that I've ever received is "You can't edit something that hasn't been written." and it helps me write easier and faster all the time.
That’s great advice!
start the book at the exciting part!! if it feels right to you then its right
I've been around a lot less but I took some time out to watch this 'cause I have always enjoyed your videos. Glad to see you working through your process! Also neat to finally see Gavin in a video. I'll try not to miss anymore videos from now on.
Mannnn, you give me so much inspiring vibes. Now i want to write my own book thanks to u ✨💚
Yesss do it!!
Hi Adele! I'm only at 8619 words on day 9. I'm okay with that though since its the most I've ever written in one week and NaNoWriMo. The most I've written for Nano before was 8000 for the whole month, so I'm proud of myself! I have Tentanitus in my left arm, and even though I'm right handed, it hurts a lot to type, plus my brain doesn't work like everyone else's so I can't expect to be able to think that hard every day, lol. I'm proud of myself and proud of you as well!
That's so great, Cheryl!! Not about the arm but 8k words is still amazing! Thank you and I'm proud of you as well!
Gavin is so cute 😭 you guys are so funny!
Another GREAT vlog Adele! From start to finish.
Was worried there for a second...but then you were able to pull through and complete your word counts.
For good or for bad THIS is all a part of the process (but you already know this).
You might have a quick start and a slow finish. Or things might come slow and then quickly build.
Or even, things might come at a nice moderate pace.
The BEST thing is that they come!
Your ideas WILL always come when you stay the course and keep at it.
It'll be worth it in the end and you'll have yourself a NOVEL...😊☺😎👍👏😊. (Now I NEED to get some tea). Those teas that you and Gavin had seemed GREAT!
Continued success with NanoWriMo! 🤩🤩🤩
Thank you so much!! This is so encouraging 💛
That thumbnail has the same energy as those "Me vs Me 30 minutes later for no reason" memes
Gavin is literally so cute 😂💕💕 You've done well with him, Adele 😌🙋♀️
Also - congrats on the writing progress - you go, girl!
Yayyyy for a nano vlog!!! :D I needed something good today so I'm sooo glad. Really love nano, my first nano, and ahead so far. Probs will end when the holidays come up. XD
Btw, I do a bit of both for chapters; for my nano project, it's numbers with a period afterwards with the name of the pov I'm writing. In my main wip, it's spelling out the numbers.
I absolutely despise writing first chapters. I feel you. But you always think that you are worse than you are. I hope the next day is better for you :) And it’s always great to ask for help.
Thank you 💛
Let me tell you...you were not alone at the beginning of a draft. Day one for me was under the word count, and I struggled with how to start my book. But now that we're two weeks in, the words are flowing and there's hope. I'm even 2k ahead of schedule, which is in case I have lack of motivation one day or choose not to write. Hope all is well, and writing has gotten easier!
3:20 usually i just put the number 1 but I also prefer naming my chapters
love this. thank you for sharing your process with us. you are inspiring!
I decided to to Nano the other day impromptu without anything planned out😂 I have never beat Nano and this year I'm 2 weeks late so I highly doubt I will beat it but you know what I'm still going to try
Cool you're finally getting started! First day is celebration day. :) About your question: I don't write in perfect chronological order, so I don't number my chapters in the first draft. I use titles instead to help me remember what the scene is about, and to quickly find it when scrolling the entire document (Word user... :P). If I zoom out I get to see the outline a little. So chapter titles are very useful in the first draft. ;) Tip: Definitely hop to a different chapter if you're stuck, you have pre-outlined anyway. That scene should fit in flawlessly. I hop all the time, and I am not even a full on outliner. Somewhere in the middle, but that varies story to story. As long as you get words on that page and more insight in your characters, right. Then the end result is pretty much the same. ;) Good luck!
I like the scene title idea! I've definitely gotten better at skipping around and it makes writing the first draft so much easier! Good luck to you!
@@adelexmarie Thank you! Hope it helps :)
I found your channel last year through NaNo so it feels good to see these vlogs come back :)
Today’s day 9 and I’m at 19,750 words right now! I’m having an awesome time but I’m not going to lie, the whole thing is cutting into my schoolwork a bit.
And I use numerical symbols for my chapters, mostly because I come from epic fantasy where we can get up to like, ridiculously high numbered chapters. Because although I like “Chapter One” much more than “Chapter 1”, “Chapter Sixty-Five” just doesn’t sit as well with me as “Chapter 65”
You will make it I support you Adel
I write two and one and not 2 1 mainly because writing a number recks my flow
Aw I love starting a new draft. I just full throw myself into sucking, the whole 'word vomit', the throwing out all words and ideas in my brain. I suck at revising! I just get so intimidated because I'm like 'this all sucks, what was the point of this, do I have to keep any of this, why do I do this to myself, does it count as a draft if I throw it away'
I definitely enjoy writing first drafts but it’s been so long for me that I was so disoriented at first! Still used to revising lol
I was working on my last novel for four years and I also totally forgot how to write a first draft! I couldn’t believe how awful it was. I usually get the first scene in my head so that part at least is inspired, but this time I didn’t get that so I hate what I wrote too. Just have to get through it so we can revise!
I so far, have written the chapters as: chapter 1 and then whoever's POV it is. Its random things like this that I get stuck on. I am really enjoying writing though!
I only wrote 1,045 words this month at least that’s something lol btw your so inspiring
I write my chapters using numbers!
YAS A VLOG
"I have 13997. Nevermind that's gonna bother me I need three words." haha if that isn't me. But you get enough words in that way xD
WHY ARE YOU SO PREETTTYYY IM CRYING
Hi Adele! I write in chapters for most novels, but as I work on multiple things at once I organise document titles as 'TNN, C_, D_' The first bit being the name of the novel in initals, the second is which chapter it is and the third bit being which draft it is. It may seem complicated but it works for me.
ooh I like that method!
I hate what I have written so far
Chapter name typography: it depends on the project. For the one I'm drafting, it's numbers. For another one, it's spelled.
I feel the PAIN, not liking anything you've written and having difficulty starting drafting. Yesterday was a rough one. I didn't like anything I was writing, the rhythm was off, but I pushed through and when I looked back at how much I wrote, I was okay with it. I will not reread anything of this until it's time for rewriting, and I will NOT change anything except if it's way too painful and I know I need to change it for the following paragraph or something. However, if I don't like it but am able to push through, I just write a comment in my Word document (like: THis is poop, I hate the rhythm or something).
I was doing so well and just lost 19856 words yesterday 😭😭😭
I just put 1,2,3 not chapters
Sorry I'm an hour late.
Just hit 16k words. Pretty far behind
