Indian elephants are native to places that do snow. Since these are African elephants though the cold may effect them differently. Considering that they both have similar amounts of body hair and African elephants are larger (meaning they generate more heat), I would assume they would be okay just like their Indian cousins are.
@@moshpitjo1146 Not quite as much as the Asian Elephant. One of they key reasons why mammoths were successful in colder climates had to do with their ears. Asian elephants are adaptable because their ears are smaller and do not help them keep cool so much but rather a bit warmer or the ears allowed them to loose heat at a slower rate. African Elephants ears are so big because it helps them cool off. But the baby should be fine as long as he isn't out there for too long.
Super Awesome Space Paladin yes, but other factors like elevation and overworking were at play there. Especially because his army was under constant attack by the Romans and Celtic peoples

Thank you for showing the world that elephants DO love to play in snow, and DO thrive in cold weather climates when they live in good zoos like your zoo!
Don’t know if they get the chills or not,but they certainly are having a ball,i liked the throwing snowballs comment can’t even imagine the chaos that would involve xx
Indeed, he is the cutest thing. Not be a negative nelly here, but perhaps with more space and more elephants (a herd) to interact with, it would be an even better environment. But anyway, I have no doubt that his keepers love him very much.
serious question, how can en elephant adapt in that environment. Africa is a typically hot dry place and that is the kind of place elephants are designed to live in. how do they react in the cold wet snow when they aren't made for it?
Brenna Spaulding There are also African elephants that live in cool to cold mountainous regions, in fact, elephants have been known to roam the freezing alpine areas of Mount Kenya, which is the second highest mountain in Africa. So, there are populations of African elephants that are not unfamiliar with cold, because elephants are not designed for one kind of climate, they adapt like most mammals.
@@ThePanther97 If that is the case, then why did the Toronto Zoo give away its African elephants and the Calgary Zoo its Asian elephants? Everyone was protesting it was too cold for them.
@@borissavic4176 It's most likely due to them not knowing how adaptable elephants are. They just see it as a tropical animal that can't cope with winters, even though African elephants once lived in mountainous areas that got cold in winter, like the mountainous Lesotho or areas in South Africa, not to mention tropical mountains like mount Kenya for example.
Elephants are actually adapted for the cold. They also aren't forced to go out into the snow. They have a heated indoor area that they aren't forced to leave. They CHOSE to go out and play in the snow, and they can go back in whenever they please.
For anyone curious there are lots of mountains in their origin countries and at night it does get quite cold, they can be let out for periods during the day in the snow but need access to their warmer area if they need their enclosures cleaned it has to be done speedy so they aren't forced into the cold for a long period with no respite and as long as they are dry when first let into the snow they are fine, so no letting them run around in the snow after a bath, but that's also just common sense. And with the people wanting them out in the wild in an ideal world they would be but consider them refugees as their home environment isn't the safest or kindest to them right now, i would happily displace my town for a sanctuary but i don't make those kind of decisions the people who do are in positions like donald trump and one of the first things he did in power was make all that hunting and trophy shit more legal and lenient than ever..
Are you insane or what? Care to explain exactly how Donald Trump had anything at all to do with trophy hunting in AFRICA?? Lmao, as if he had any control over the decisions foreign countries on another continent make about THEIR wildlife. 😂😂😂 My God, anti-Trump delusion syndrome is real, folks.
+Southern Cowboy not typically, although in some regions of Africa it does get cold at night! We give our African elephants access to the outdoors during the winter if they want to go explore and play in the snow :) And apparently Lucas loves it! Thanks for watching!
The north African elephant that is now extinct did tolerate the cold rather well because of the freezing winters in the Atlas mountains, Hannibal used the species to cross the snowy Alps between France and Italy to invade the Romans
The Toledo zoo does NOT treat their elephants well, doesn't anyone remember the elephant attack in 2010 due to the use of the bull hook applicated by the trainer? I'm afraid that this baby is being abused in private too.
Thanks for sharing your concerns. We care deeply about all of our elephants, and that's why we take such good care of them. You can learn more about our elephants' care and enrichment at www.toledozoo.org/newsroom/PDF/Tembo_Trail/Committed%20to%20elephant%20care.pdf
Toledo Zoo There's a conspicuous lack of information in that PDF about bullhooks or free-contact handling. Does the Toledo Zoo still use bullhooks? If so, why? If not, when did it stop?
The surveillance video from the 2010 attack shows that the elephant was acting aggressively before the hook was used. In fact, he was being fed at the time. Since the 2010 attack, Toledo Zoo no longer allows free contact between the elephants and the keepers. Baby Lucas was born after that incident, and has been raised only in a protected contact environment with a barrier between the animals and keepers at all times.
If you watch it, it clearly shows that Red Fox agitated Louis and instead of leaving it alone, he entered again with a bull hook to intimidate Louis, who even covered down in fear of it, then attacked. So No it was provoked and out of order

You do realize that it gets super cold in Africa, right? Elephants are adapted to handle the cold. Also, they have a heated indoor area that they can stay in. They CHOOSE to go out in the snow. My dad also told me that in Canada, they'll go out to the water and break the ice so that they can get in the water. They don't mind the cold.

What an adorable video! I love the end where he ran up to you and plopped down in the snow. So precious :)
His trumpet makes it sound like he's laughing in the snow!
Lucas looks like the only african elephant baby to play in the snow and he seems to love it

R.I.P. Lucas you will be missed. run free big guy.
What happened to him? Why he died?
He died of EEHV, a herpesvirus that occurs both in the wild and in captivity especially in young elephants.
Total cutie! So glad he's here and safe, where no baddies with bang sticks can get to him or his momma.
That's so wonderful.
Maybe you guys could teach the elephants how to make and throw snow balls! ❄️☃️🌬
And he’s in _Lucas_ county too :)
so fun to watch and what a loud trumpet sound! Is the snow good on their feet since they come from Africa and no snow there? Just curious
Their feet are mostly bones- he looked pretty happy to me
How is he not cold? Maybe in his mind hes a mammoth
Well they live in all kinds of climates. As far as I know, it can get chilly in the deserts at night.

Southern Cowboy I'm sure on some ancestral level. They are descended from mammoths after all. 🤔
No, mammoths were a different branch. The African and Indian elephants of today aren't even in the same genus!
Considering the amount of body heat those things generate, they're probably not too badly off.
