Michael. One of my favorites before your time was Them (giant ants take over the world) and a 3D one called House of Wax which scared the hell out of me. I did enjoy your categories and the whole booktube!
The scariest movies (to me) not on this list are as follows: Let's Scare Jessica to Death Burnt Offerings Ghost Story (1981) Midsommar Magic Tourist Trap The Stepford Wives (1975) The Thing I agree with your rankings/categorizations for the most part.
This was a fun video Michael. I started to watch it yesterday, and then last night I actually had a dream about being chased by alligators! I was in some kind of a paddle boat and they were coming to get me!
Loved this video. Some random thoughts. First, "Nachos are not served at funerals, for example" is a great line. Second, my own favorite horror movie shots: Danny Torrence riding his Big Wheel (couldn't agree more) and two shots from The Changeling (1980), which I was surprised was not on the list. I shared almost all of your conclusions, except Get Out, where you really surprised me. Although I never saw the Stepford Wives, so I guess I'm just more able to put Jordan Peele's masterpeice (IMHO) on a pedestal.
Love your categories Michael! 🤣 The entire Evil Dead franchise is so much fun! I also had a blast with Nightmare on Elm Street, not usually into slashers but this was awesome. Some of the sequels are also super-creative. Disagree, Drag Me To Hell is fun, belongs in Nachos. At least we agree with Dawn of The Dead, absolute masterpiece. Noooo! Get Out?? Really?? Anita is absolutely horrified that you turned that masterpiece into Ice Cream. 🤣🤣 The Descent is definitely one of the scariest movies I have ever seen. The Wicker Man is a classic, the remake with Nicholas Cage not so much.
Sorry Anita🤷But I'm glad you were able to appreciate the movie. I'm not protective of much from my childhood, but apparently The Stepford Wives is one property I don't want touched.
It is a pretty good set of movies. I love a lot of them. I have a great time watching horror movies. There is a lot of fantastic music in the horror genre.
The Exorcist III deserves to make the list. Ditto for 28 Days Later, and the underappreciated horror classic, The Entity starring the outstanding Barbara Hershey. Other than that, I thought your reviews and categorizations were spot on.
@@Michael_Wertenberg Honestly, you might want to give Exorcist III a shot. It's mostly a creepy, suspenseful serial killer story, and not as 'exorcisty' as the first one. Also, forgot to mention The Strangers. Have you seen it? You might find it silly, but it genuinely creeped me out.
This is the craziest ranking I’ve ever seen 😆 Love your voice so I enjoyed this video but I highly disagree with the ranking. In what parallel universe is blear with project more scary than hereditary???? 😂
@@Michael_Wertenberg completely respect your opinion but again I highly disagree 😆 For me it was building the tension till the scene that you mentioned and after that things just escalated and got crazier and more scary and we started to learn more about the family and secrets… for me it’s one of the best newer horror movies.
@@Michael_WertenbergI agree. The first person on RUclips to put hereditary where it belongs. Blair is definitely scarier. Also yes thanks for pointing out the flaws in autopsy of Jane doe. Imo the 2nd half devolves into horror tropes and that really disappointed me after a stellar first half
Love the categories, lol. The Exorcist terrified me when I was a kid. My mom had to sit with me at night for months. Another one that really scared me as a kid was one called Race with the Devil (I think?) ... it was disturbing. Probably wouldn't have the same effect if I watched it today though. Love Psycho, and The Shining!
There's always a film missing from lists. Two that occurred to me were The Thing (My favourite) and It Follows. Agree with you about The Babadook. I didn't get it. It's personal though, innit?
Three Musketeers, really gross? Oh Michael I'm not sure we can be friends anymore! 😂😋 My top 5: Burnt Offerings Alien Aliens The Thing Saw (first one) I don't watch alot of movies anymore. Fun video, something different! 😎❤️
You are right. "1408" is insulting on all levels. As what usually happens, a studio buys the rights to a story and believes they can do better, so the plot is totally changed, and "scary" effects are added. So bad. A complete travesty perpetrated upon an excellent short story.
Unfortunately, that happens far to often. But every now and again a film maker manages to add something to great source material. 1408 is not one of those cases though.
This is my list of my all time most fave horror movies in no order: Legend of Hell House Shadow Hours From Dusk Till Dawn Dead and Buried Cannibal Holocaust Innocent Blood Kwaidan Dawn of the Dead 1978 The Horde Zombie Suspiria Near dark Creepshow The Fog The Exorcist An American Werewolf in London The Hunger In the Mouth of Madness Prince of Darkness 1408 Agnel Heart The Shining The Mist Salem's Lot The Addiction Bliss
I would not digress a lot from this tier ranking... but where is The Thing? A masterpiece! Also, The Shining is a good two notches lower for me... I'll give it credit for isolated elements, but it left a lot on the table, and the blood gushing elevator always completely throws me out of it.
well the horror movies that really scared me as a kid in the 70s was the Exorcist and the Sentinel, watched those ovies with my eyes closed for most of the movies.
Ok, let’s see. Do read “1408”. It’s completely different, very like Aickman or Blackwood. The original Halloween is so much better than it had any right to be, like Casablanca. Jaws didn’t scare me at the time and doesn’t now. But then several generations of my family lived near the Pacific Ocean. About Children of the Corn: Arthur Miller got there earlier. :) The Omen has Pete Postelthwaite and his Italian accent. What could be scarier? :) Best final shot in a horror movie is the elevator descent in Angel Heart as the credits roll. Dawn of the Dead is so good, and rights holder is sitting on it so he can remake it in 3D. Idiot. The Lodge was great. The other night I saw Lovely, Dark And Deep, and I think you might enjoy it as much as I did. The main character is a national park ranger who finds out what’s going on with disappearances there. It really avoids the sin of over-explanation, knowing when a few evocative word are enough, and a superbly chilling final scene.
Thanks for the recommendation! I'll check out Lovely, Dark, and Deep. The Angel Heart closing shot is a good one, too. (I still prefer Blair Witch, but it's in the conversation along with Invasion of the Body Snatchers)
Already offended by the anti-icecream comments. You did, however, give me the great idea to demand in my will to serve nachos at my funeral. This might also guarantee a few attendees. There are quite a few classics that I've never seen (like Jaws and Alien). Cabin fever sounds like the Troop, which makes me think I would like it. I think I was in highschool when blair witch came out, and I believed it was real at the time. I was genuinely scared of the tree outside my window after that. Also saw it in the theatre, and part way through the machine broke, which only added to the experience.
Oh, so you're one of those? One of those 'ice-cream apologists'. I think you're camp is winning the war; ice-cream is everywhere and a beloved food substitute. You're camp is winning, for now! Nice how you were able to turn a broken projector into a positive! Nicely done.
