Everyone has certain stereotypes based on experiences but the vast majority of people judge others on their character not their race. What an eye opening story!
What a WONDERFUL man with an honest and very important story with honest perspective where and when it counts! Please let's all stop being convinced that we are supposed to hate each other!!! And realize that we're ALL God's children. And let's learn from the perspective and experience of a man that was able to witness what happens when human beings are together with the politics and the lies stripped away and what one one brother will do for another.
A childhood friend of mines father served in an infantry platoon in Vietnam. He grew up in central Georgia. We were asking him about how the races got along in Vietnam compared to here during that time frame and his reply was “over there EVERYONE that had on an army uniform was your brother”
Right after our first buzz cut in boot camp in ‘65 a southern kid came up to me, staring at the top of my head. He said he thought all Jews had horns and asked if mine had been cut off along w/my hair. I laughed it off & we became pretty good friends, even though I’d never heard that before.
Dr King said it best: "Judge a man on the content of his character, not the color of his skin". That goes BOTH ways.....there are bums in ALL races. There are also GREAT folks in all races. If a person is a BUM and black....he's a BUM. If a white person says he's a bum, it's NOT racism. If he's a bum and white....he's a BUM. If a black person says he's a bum, it's not racism.
What an amazing story. "We were soldiers. rather than any racial..." I am so glad Mr. Chambers mentioned that. I also like the fact that Mr. Chambers mentions the names of his buddies. Especially the fallen.
Thank you sir. In my heart, there are just people. My mind knows that some of these people like to focus on people's skin color, gender, sexual orientation or gender, and lately - which political party they align with. They are still just people. However, those who focus on categorizing and tribalizing one group of people against the others, these are less than people. These are evil thats walking around in people's skin. The sooner we all recognize what those bad people are and give them no safe harbor, the sooner ALL of us can focus on loving one another instead of struggling for power over each other.
Politicians don't want this story to be told. They need different races to hate each other. Truth is....most people are kind and friendly and nice to talk to. They just want to enjoy their friends and family. I can get along with anybody. Race doesn't really matter much....it's the person.
As a Vietnam veteran, what I found to be quite surprising; was that most racial problems I encountered were from black guys in the unit southern guys mostly. I'm a Southern California, kid.
