Man, this was before the hide and seek icons were the eyes inside of blocks and magnifying glasses icons respectively, before the exploit where entering first-person mode keeps you from drowning for some reason was discovered, and when SmallAnt could talk about collector's anxiety.

Nintendo needs to just make this a reality already. There's so many characters you could use for the additional characters.
You could use Luigi and Toads and Peach like in the New SMB Wii games and 3D World. You could do all bros with Luigi, Wario, and Waluigi. Heck, you could have character selection like the Kart/Party/etc games!
And that's not to mention you could give different characters different attributes and abilities. It's obviously great with everyone moving like Mario in Odyssey, but you could have other ways for different characters to navigate and such too, which would make it even cooler.
