I need to get this one in my hands. I couldn’t really grasp what it is Viper does from this preview, but the animations look dope and there’s enough weaving that it should be fun.
What it does? It does damage via melee lol. I mean most* jobs within a role are pretty similar it’s just the flavor of their animations that’s sets the apart. Obviously they have some differences here and there but when you’ve played this game for a decade you can recognize the mechanic skeleton of any job role you’re familiar with and figure out a new one fairly quickly.
The buffs are dmg up, haste, and the debuff is increased dmg taken. The finisher of the 3 part combo also gives a buff that will dictate what the next 3 part combo finisher your suppose to press. The second part of the combo has to alternate for haste and dmg up. So it would look something like this 1-2-1(3), 1-1-2(3), 1-2-2(3), 1-1-1(3). (3) is the ogcd you do at the end of the combo.
My nicpick is them calling it "Dual Blade" and "Double-bladed". Why not say Dual Blade and Twin-blades? They even confused themselves when they were trying to describe it, lol.

I wish they did something similar for other classes that feel like they just sit down waiting for cds an eternity, while having a class fantasy that doesn't match that aspect.
This job looks cool as fuuuuuuck, I'll definitely give it a try, but my melee dps main entirely depends on how good the dragoon rebuild is, probably won't be a "brain off" class initially though

Been using xivcombo for so long I’m glad they’re adding it in game, even for just consolidating 1,2,3 combos and things like dancer buffs turning into the nuke abilities afterwards saves SO much space and helps me with how slow my fingers are
the way they set up the hotbars on this job with the AOE on the right and single target on the left in that square block is exactly how I set up my bars. my bars are 3x4 because of mmo mouse and mine are flipped with 123 at the top rather then the bottom, but yeah. It made me happy to see them set up like this because it really helped me visualize how I can set up my own bars. The one labelled - here is the gap closer, and the one labelled 7 is the 2 minute party buff, which I usually have on a third bar to the very very right. I can picture it perfectly on my own bars watching this and I love that.
It's not like deaths design, the buffs are put on the viper, not on the enemy, the viper has 3 buffs they put on themselves and 1 they put on the enemy that's an "enfeeblement"
It's just Reaper 2.0, but instead of going Demon Mode you go Darth Maul lol. Looks cool but I feel like they could've a bit more different than the gameplay loop of reaper, at least when you go into that form.

So it looks like it’s GCD shifts depending on your burst window? It’s slower than MNK/NIN and then in its burst it’ll match NIN at least and your weaving in like GNB continuation with oGCD. Unless there is a limiter this is going to be another ping dependent job. If you have high latency you may suffer DPS in the burst window. It’ll be interesting to try but it won’t replace NIN as my main.
I absolutely hate the battle stance... I feel like it looks so casual and flat footed. The job looks really fun tho. I don't think there is too few buttons, if you add in LB, feint, anti-knockback, bloodbath, second wind, true north, etc, there is almost a full bar.
I can't wait to witness Red DPS midwits stand still and let mobs die around them while their unread tooltips languish in purgatory. Then when you say, "Hey Picto/Viper, where's your [Big Shiny Transform] SFX+VFX?" "Huh? chill, it's only dungeon" looooooool

idk, this seems boring. It's more or less the same of what we already have. They could have had a cool stance dancing class for debuffs/utility to damage cash outs so you'd have to go in and out for your rotations manually, but this is just I do damage until I go into a mode, then I do more damage until I go into another mode where I do more damage. It's flashy but leaves a lot to be desired gameplay wise.
i mean the whole design of ff14 is to deal damage.. Every class in the game is based on dealing damage. To change that they would have to remake the entire game

Rather than something like 1x to 0.8x to 2x where there's a small break phase of build up into huuuge burst. Its a nuance that FFXIV has moved away. For better or worse.

I have a problem with the identity and skill expression of a player to the class being lost by making things always go ABC. There's very little need to deviate and very little room for player expression or for skillful players to be skillful. Viper seems like a by the numbers FFXIV class where Ninja, black mage, dancer, monk (currently) and maybe Astro (in DT). Classes used to have a better identity for skill expression where viper is just ping expression.

The only part you need to pay attention to is refreshing the damage debuff. Here is the entirety of what you do as a Viper: - 123 combo that you need to alternate (the one you have to press lights up on the job gauge ofc, wouldn't want people to accidentally mess up buttons), continuation at the end - 40sec cd combo with 2 step continuation, gives gem - enshroud, press 5 buttons with continuation between each - use a gem for ranged attack with continuation If you love pressing a lot of buttons real fast with little thought, this job might be cool, for me pictomancer looks infinitely more interesting. This is just gunbreaker but without having to do tank things. Disappointing that they add 2 melee DPS to the game in back-to-back expansions with so little to make them stand out in terms of gameplay.
Man even the devs don't sound excited to show off this lame ass job, It has no identity other than "swings blade", Corsair would have been a 10,000% better option.

I can't speak on the other games raid design much but they really share little with 14 especially in terms of fight design. Destiny 2 raids had a lot of more platforming and mechanical execution involved but I wouldn't expect that from 14.
That is mainly because gw2 has a lot of build variety so there are many combat scenarios that can feel different as a result. FF14 is rigid so what you see is what you get. Evident in how samey and limited AoE attacks are and how they simply can't design healing or tanking to not be braindead and homogenized. 8.0 apparently will see jobs get another look at their gameplay identity.
GW2 raiding is all gimmicks, the first raid boss they ever introduced had players carrying rocks up a hill to throw at the boss because he was a literal invincible god that could only be hit by rocks for some reason
Viper looks like a very busy job and thats exactly what i wanted, i love jobs with a lot of ogcds.
