@@IronMan-ed9vg what was shown was factual. The areas are disputed, and was a correction from a prior video. I don’t make videos to push an agenda of a particular country. I understand your view point but there are multiple sides to the dispute and I am not taking a side in my videos. Edit: I’m not sure you can tell but that was a Dutch map showing the disputed territories. It wasn’t shaded dark green but it did lightly color in the topography. So at the time of it being published it was made by your own government, not me.
What would have happened if Suriname had chosen to remain a colony in this modern age of equality, would the Netherlands have been obliged to invest in Suriname so the prosperity would be equal to that of the Netherland?
No they wouldn't have had to. The Charter of the Kingdom of the Netherlands states that every country within the Kingdom is equal. The stronger or wealthier parts should support the weaker or poorer parts. That is very vague. To see how it would be, just look at how they treat the countries of Aruba, Curacao and Sint Maarten. The Netherlands was very stingy, to say it bluntly, to come in with financial help on these islands. Eventually these countries had to take loans from the Netherlands, in which the Netherlands has a lot of say in how it should be used. It caused a lot of strain on the relationship and Sint Maarten sort of even "sued" the Netherlands via the UN, for acting neo-colonialist. Now I understand why the Dutch want some control over the money, because sometimes the islands, haven't been financially responsible with the handeling of money. So they want the assurance that their money won't be wasted. Even when we were a country within the Kingdom they weren't willing to invest in Suriname.
Awesome Country! Lived there for a year and a half in the 1980s. Back when it was real. No cell phones, just really great people to talk to. Going into the bush was quite the experience. The Cayman didn’t worry me, the piranha no problem, most of the snakes were evadable but intimidating, the monkeys were butt heads. The big cats were worrisome, but two things drove me crazy down there. The big assed spiders, and I don’t know what the hell it was but while in a rubber duck/raft, I saw something roll in the water that had to be 10 to 15 feet long because it just kept rolling right next to us and as big around as my thigh. We were deep in the jungle and the water is like tea so you can’t see down into it or you’d probably piss yourself. Anyway, I never found out what that thing was, and I’m good with that. I’ve rambled enough, Suriname is great!
There’s a Surinamese film on YT called “Wan Pipel” (One People) about the tensions between the Indian and African communities in Surinam. It plays out via the romantic choices an African-Surinamese man makes between his Dutch and Indian Surinamese girlfriends. It was made in 1976. I saw it many years ago on TV in the UK. It’s a really good film, highly recommended, with English subtitles.

I found out about Suriname when l was visiting Holland in 1983 while in the US Air Force stationed in England. I had met a girl from there named Astrid, very beautiful
I am Dutch-Surinamese, my parents stayed in the Netherlands after independence. Its funny how more English speakers are getting interested in Surinam history. The Netherlands are amazing but our institutions should do a better job with this side of history and also in general. Especially outside of the bigger cities certain native Dutch people feel like Dutch people with a colonial background aren't really Dutch because they are black or a other a ethnicity while these were historically all born under the Dutch flag (pre-independance). What they are forgetting is that their are also white people with a Colonial background which they do recognize exposing the hypocrisy. And these have a carribean mentality so they expose that openly.
It goes both ways. In school we had 2 brothers from Suriname but the coloured people did not accept them as being Surinamese at firtst since they were too white. Digging into history can realy enrich peoples views, as long as we don't turn a blind to the dark sides of our nations. (And we Dutch have a fair share of dark history.)
@@hotdognl70 Yes but that isn't institutionally and white Surinamese are recognized as an official ethnicity (de boeroes). But within the Netherlands we are not officially recognized as a 'Dutch ethnicity' we are 'allochtoon' which is strange as most Surinamese always had a Dutch nationality as first and only (being part of the kingdom, also goes for Curaçao, Aruba, Bonaire, Sint Maarten), not different than 'native, white Dutch people'. Wether that is racism or not, or just the system being outdated within that view is up for debate. Not only that we are 'non-western allochtonen' but that is very contradicting, because someone from the USA is considered a 'western allochtoon' but does that also go for black people from the USA, specifically the 'foundational black Americans who are their just as long as the' foundational white Americans'? Because how come that a black American be considered a 'western allochtoon' whole not even knowing about Dutch culture, while Black Surinamese people and culture is a product of the Dutch kingdom. Dutch is still our 1st official language, culturally and economically, yet institutionally we are being very disenfranchised from official Dutch recognition as being considered allochtone like that relationship in history means nothing. And if Black Americans aren't considered non Western and White Americans 'are' than that is up for debate as well. It's gives a Subliminal message to our society that being 'Black' or Afro-centric means your are 'not really Dutch' or it's purely a 'foreign or exotic' thing, non-western by default. While Dutch culture as many outside influences. Sinterklaas isn't a Dutch event either and Black Pete is just a late made up interpretation based on black the servant or demon but for no reason chose to give him negroid characteristics, and even slavery wasn't an excuse because why did other countries who also have St Nicholas day didn't adapt it in the same way even if the servant is black (till this day, other fully painted black servants still look totally different and looks more like Judeo Christian demon) But our race relations will always have some issues, even Surinamese people don't always get along. The Creoles and the Marrons can have common social conflicts and can be very discriminative towards eachother while these are both African descendant groups. So it's not about being perfect, and I do think some are just too much into victimhood mentality, but our institutions could do a better job. Thanks for replying, have a nice day🙏🏽
From the bottom of my heart i want to say thank you for reviewing my country🙏🏾❤️
Love and support from Suriname ❤️🇸🇷 🇸🇷🇸🇷
Thank you for watching! I'm happy I was able to make such a well received video on Suriname!
If you’re from Suriname 🇸🇷,then you can’t like the video, that starts with false information of our country Map! The Map he’s using is not the right one!
@@IronMan-ed9vg did you watch the whole video?? Cuz if you did you’d never say this, he explained everything (according to my level of understanding)
I'm from Suriname, thanks for the video, Suriname is very underrated 👏👏👏

jamang,i love seeing video's like these about our beloved country🇸🇷🇸🇷🇸🇷
What would have happened if Suriname had chosen to remain a colony in this modern age of equality, would the Netherlands have been obliged to invest in Suriname so the prosperity would be equal to that of the Netherland?
Neighbouring French Guiana (like Martinique and Guadeloupe) does prefer to stay a colony.
@@Blaqjaqshellaq France is less of a wellfare state than the Netherlands. (Scandinavia even more wellfare)
@@Zero-oh8vm really? Have you ever seen poverty ridden Saba?
@@apeman9238 I see you're right, 40% of Netherlands Carribean inhabitants earns under the minimum wage.
I'm from the US but grew up partly in Suriname. I learned quite a bit from this video.
Probably an Anaconda snake.
Great to see people talking about my home country 🤎🇸🇷

nice to hear about Suriname is a country where i live
There’s a Surinamese film on YT called “Wan Pipel” (One People) about the tensions between the Indian and African communities in Surinam.
It plays out via the romantic choices an African-Surinamese man makes between his Dutch and Indian Surinamese girlfriends. It was made in 1976. I saw it many years ago on TV in the UK.
It’s a really good film, highly recommended, with English subtitles.
Thank you so much for making and sharing this video. Mostly of the people across don't know anything about Suriname. I have even met people who doesn't even know that there is a country in South America named Suriname. I'm glad seeing my country getting famous I must say... Thank you so much. 💓

Still think the Dutch had the best deal with Surinam.
I found out about Suriname when l was visiting Holland in 1983 while in the US Air Force stationed in England. I had met a girl from there named Astrid, very beautiful
So nice story about Suriname
I'm from Suriname but I live in America now, Virginia beach va. Might move back soon maybe idk.
Hey a fellow Virginian!
Sinterklaas isn't a Dutch event either and Black Pete is just a late made up interpretation based on black the servant or demon but for no reason chose to give him negroid characteristics, and even slavery wasn't an excuse because why did other countries who also have St Nicholas day didn't adapt it in the same way even if the servant is black (till this day, other fully painted black servants still look totally different and looks more like Judeo Christian demon)
But our race relations will always have some issues, even Surinamese people don't always get along. The Creoles and the Marrons can have common social conflicts and can be very discriminative towards eachother while these are both African descendant groups. So it's not about being perfect, and I do think some are just too much into victimhood mentality, but our institutions could do a better job.
Thanks for replying, have a nice day🙏🏽
DIT IS ALWEER ALINEA 2😡;
