That "aw hell no" @ 10:24 spoke to my soul.😂
I’ve been trying to define “resonance” for years and only thought I understood. Visually being able to see the subharmonics really helped this click for me! We need that tongue and laryngeal position to create a proper vowel shape so we can not only produce the pitch we’re singing, but also the overtones that help us perceive the pitch as balanced and clear!! Incredible!!!!
I’m a piano teacher but a beginner singer (7 months into lessons) and this video was so helpful and super interesting! Love understanding what’s happening with the sounds and the feel of the air pressure difference with chest and head voice. Thanks for such a helpful video 😊
Finally, a video that actually makes sense of formants!!! I understand the theory that different vowels are going to work better at different pitches but then get lost when people start talking about first and second formants. This is amazing, thank you!!!
The science part distracted me. I lost you.
You know how to put in words and make it understandable, definitely you have a gift beyond being an amazing singer. God bless you Gemma, thank you.
this was really interesting! please do more videos like this in the future!
Difficult but soooo interesting. Thank you Gemma!
OMG your explanations are the best I’ve ever heard! Thank you so much! Gonna binge all your vids now.
This is amazing! I would love to have more videos like these as always wanted to learn how to use my mix voice since I have a classical background
Thank you for the amazing content ❤ ❤❤

Gemma is brilliant - so glad she is sharing this!!!
Been watching singing videos all week and this is by far the most informative and interesting! Thank you for sharing
Your teaching is so strong!
I am amazed! I see this in my head! I don't know anything about music as far as notes go right now! I'm learning. But I see music in my head, and I have taught myself to sing by aiming my voice at what feels like a 4d graph that extend from my body! As weird as that sounds. And I feel where a note sits and aim my voice at that spot util it locks in!
So, hearing the music and science behind this is incredible!
I can't wait to learn more!
do you have more videos going deeper into resonance and this chart and the formants? this is awesome
1st Viewers and 1st Commenter and 1st Liker 👍🏻.
I love it, I love your channel compare to other Vocal Teachers/Coach!
What can I say 🎉 my singing improved 1000% practicing this - thänk uuu! Also for the physics part - it made so much sense - I am literlally shocked- positively 🎊
That was so interesting! If I'm reading you right.. we're already singing the harmonics.. and the octave higher.. we just need to bring it out instead of the chest note?
So fascinating! I love this
Will definitely try to do this exercise on my own
Thank you Gemma ❤
Love love love love this video! No idea about the science, but I’ll learn! ❤
Omg what a wonderful explanation ❤
i looooooooove your videos, so much gratitude. send you a big hug from argentina♥
Marvelous. so glad I have found your channel!
More of this 😍😍😍😍
Question about the exercise:
Do feel like you are pushing (chest)? Or were you increasing your CT as you went up?
Your such a great teacher thank you!
I DL'd this software..should be interesting!
Fantastic
Thank you
I love it, I just didn’t understand the use of the fry before the sound, is it to release sub glottal pressure? If so, why not using sounds that could be less misleading (as for example starting with “V” or using lips trills?) i just am worried that a beginner student could confuse vocal fry with false vocal chords constriction
Many thanks 🙏🏼
Vocal Fry has INSANE uses in bass and subharmonic singing. Also intentional distortion. It is only terrible when pushed too hard and uncontrolled.
This is awesome
Whoa this is cool...11:29...gotta go back and listen again what the heck is happening? I like how scientific this feels.
Amazing! Can you say more about your mouth shape? Teeth showing is important or is that just the way you make that vowel sound? Thanks!
Sei stratosferica, peccato che sia tt in Inglese anche i commenti,ma troverò il modo per seguire bene🥰🥰🥰
Actuallyyy, the vocal fry is used in alot of metal techniques! :)
What software are you using to show the harmonics?
Hi Gemma, great video! Is this VoceVista standard or pro version? I’d like to purchase it for my studio. Thanks!
God thats cool.,, what program is this again I had a hard time catching that info
What about male voices? Does it work the same?
please excuse my ignorance but how much is the mini-course in USD?
Ciao, whose are Your tips to cure a voice with problema to mantein the correct tune only for some notes, (not at the extremes of the range) as Natural supplements and vocale excersices ? Grazie
Does it matter if the vocal fry continues into the nuh nuh nuh? I have to push a little harder to get it to be clean which seems to defeat the purpose of setting up the correct pressure with the fry.
Hi! Are harmonics and formants the same?
Harmonics: they come from the vibration of the vocal folds and modulation of the airflow as it passes between the vibrating folds. Sounds like a buzz alone. Formants: They come from the bouncing of the primary vocal fold sound in the vocal tract and by resonance make some frequencies more pronounced than others; these frequencies are the formants.
Think a guitar: the strings do what the vocal folds do and the wooden body gives the characteristic guitar timbre (which for the voice is perceived as vowel and vocal timbre)
does this apply to males as well?
The principle yes, the numbers (and hence vowels) not necessarily. One needs to see which vowels have a formant frequency around the frequency of the second harmonic (double the fundamental frequency) for the note region where your passaggio is (where you would presumably like to find a mixed pop-like sound) and employ these vowels.
"Mode 3 is 😏 "
gemas eyes freak me out 😦
Wha? Why? Tell me more?
If her eyes freak you out so much then go somewhere else
Yea I can’t do anything with all those graphs and waves. Seems like nobody can explain mixed voice in plain terms…..as in NOBODY! Makes me wonder if mix is even a real thing. Been singing all my life and never heard of mix until about 10 years ago. Before then, you either had the range or your didn’t. Seems to me, Mix is something that doesn’t really exist in reality. Really didn’t get anything out of this video….no more than any other of the 100’s of videos on the topic over the years.
That sounds like a you problem.
First of all, the "mixed voice" doesn't exist.
You're right. :) I'm going to break this down in an email for my list. DM me your email if you want I'm. @ gemmasugrue on instagram and I'll send you the email. :)
freaking YAAAAASSSSS you are so amazing!! fantastic communication, LOOOVED the voceVista clip. now to save $400 :)
