Colorado will be beautiful! Just bring bear spray, keep your car locked because bears can and do know how to open unlocked doors (it's on video). Higher elevation... take it slow and stay hydrated. Otherwise, glad you'll be travelling with some besties. I'm sure you'll have a blast and enjoy the phenominal scenery. Just be safe!
Gila National forest is paradise, It's just outside Silver City.New mexico which is a wonderful little city, Fork's campground is right on the Gila river With lots of other free camping options in the area As well as paid campgrounds with Hot Springs. Trail of the mountain spirit scenic by way is one of the most beautiful drives in america

If you like bbq, try Serious Texas BBQ in Durango. We also stopped at a brewpub when there but can’t remember the name. Pagosa Springs was nice, there is a public ‘bath house’ in the downtown area where you can soak in individual tubs, even on the roof looking at the mountains. The cost was reasonable for a 1-day pass. If you do venture further north, beware that Highway 50 at the Blue Mesa Reservoir west of Gunnison is currently closed due to bridge repair. The detour is on gravel to bypass that area, and it’s open at certain times of the day to accommodate westbound and eastbound traffic.
I love Western Colorado, we vacation and cabin camp in the Flat Tops Wilderness Area and White National Forest north of Glenwood Springs.

Oh wow! Cool!! If you haven’t been to Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs that is a must to see!! I’m not sure about the camping areas however. We lived there for 5 yrs. No camping tho. I’ll be following!! Yaayyyyyy!!
That trip to Garden of the God's sealed the deal for me to move to CO. 🤗 I moved to the northeast... wish I were closer to the front range, but it's too expensive.

New Mexico State campgrounds are cheap. Full hookups for $14.50 a night or you can buy a year’s pass. I hope you and Winston have Fun!!

Bluewater Lake State Park has a really nice hiking trail down into a canyon and along a river and their cliffside campsites have great lake views, if you stay a night in Albuquerque taking the Sandia Peak tramway is a great way to escape the heat and there's gorgeous hiking trails up there (service dogs are allowed), Jemez Falls Campground has a three mile roundtrip hike to Macaulay Warm Spring and there's a waterfall there too, Las Conchas trailhead in Jemez Springs area is a really beautiful and easy hiking trail along a river. I just did the drive north from Arizona through New Mexico to Pagosa Springs Colorado and those were the highlights of my trip. Just check websites to track where the wildfires are at, there's quite a few active ones right now.

Are you a member of the Auto Club?? They have now loaded all their tour guides, camping books, etc online and you can get all their info on their website. Sadly, they don't print books anymore, so if you come across one in a thrift store, you might want to grab it. Good luck!
I live in Southern New Mexico, and there are many beautiful state parks in New Mexico that you might enjoy - especially in the northern part of the state. One of my favorites is Navajo Dam near Farmington. I'm sorry, but I have issues with the person that posted a blanket statement saying northern New Mexico isn't "safe." I realize you're trying to follow cooler temperatures for you and your sweet pup. There "is" an annual park pass you can purchase, but if you're considering it act quickly as it's going to be phased out in the near future. You seem pretty level headed so I'm sure you'll figure out what's best for you and Wynston.

You need to be careful in the north NM. I lived there for a while and it isn’t real safe . I would try getting up to southern colorado, Durango is great .
A lot of hiking there .
I dont know none of those areas just u both b safe have a good time and I hope5he storm that hitting between new Mexico and taxes is long gone before u both get there
