I can't tell you how much us RC flyers appreciate your U-Tube video's. You should be a teacher by profession, you are detailed and at the same time easy to understand. Your calmness and verbal lessons are well received and well done. Great job! I can't wait to fly my Valiant once I build mine which arrived yesterday.
Maidened tonight! Flew it in low dual rate, didn't load the SAFE. It's been over 20 years since I've flown, so I kept it simple, but this thing is FAST. Managed to land in one piece, but came in way too fast, ran into the gravel, made another approach and landing attempt, had a fence reach up and snag the wheel and toss it to the ground - no damage though, 3rd time was a charm, but I still need to slow it down more. You're right, this thing flies beautifully. Looking forward to trying again when it's a little lighter out though. I flew right after the sun went down, my old eyes had trouble judging distances when coming it to land.
Well this is what I went with for plane #2 otw. My other one is an Aeroscout and I love it. I'm getting more comfortable with the sticks everyday. No depending on safe anymore! Anyway, thanks for the work you and camera crew put in, God Bless Yall!
Very nice! Glad you're making headway!!! Flying is HARD to learn, but WELL WORTH IT!!! Keep at it. This is a skill that can't be bought, and that's one of the reasons it's so dang appealing to me ;) Thanks for being here with us!
Really appreciate the commentary and letting us know how much power you’re using in the various maneuvers, landings etc. I’ve progressed from hopping my planes on landings to smooth and confident thanks to your videos.
The Valiant is the best kept secret in the Horizon lineup. It has an near-symmetrical wing profile and almost no dihedral, which makes it extremely aerobatic. There are two weaknesses I saw in my Valiant: 1) The tail seems very flexy to me. Some stiffening in both horizontal and especially the vertical would be helpful. 2) Historically, the motor mounts have not been glued in well, and it will fail over time if you don't beef it up in the beginning (i.e. more glue/epoxy). If your Valiant starts getting noisy for no apparent reason, you can bet your motor mount is on the verge of letting go. Oh yeah, and watch the prop. It's big and there is scant little clearance with the relatively short landing gear struts. Prop strikes can occur easily and the prop is a bit different than most. If I was a new buyer, I'd be sure to order some extra props immediately. One more piece of advise: I wrap a nice, clean piece of clear packing tape around the leading edge of each wing (from tip to root). It really adds a measure of protection against inadvertent bumps. It will save you some dings in the leading edge. Other than these issues I find the Valiant to be a heck of a lot of fun. As always, thanks much for sharing. Steve
Yes! Only issue I've had with leading edge tape, is that if you use a thin tape, it can get a bit "Uglified" over time ;) Also, here's a trick - if you want to strengthen the wing...use TAPE along the top, prestress the wing (Hang it between two chair backs, and make the fuse heavy), and apply the tape, and it will HOLD as you unstress the wing (take the weight of the fuse) - works almost as good as a SPAR - Actually, it's pretty cool to see work ;) I did this on my ARCUS M, but it was just not quite enough on that plane. Same dilemma as above, it will get "uglified" eventually in the wrong conditions ;(
Dang bro you are so right... my tail is flopping all over the place. And tonight doing touch and goes the whole nose piece just came unglued from the foam and was just hanging there propeller and everything.... I don't have multiple planes anymore because I usually only fly one at at time and I run 3 batteries a day on them. That being said they fall apart now before I crash them... I guess that is progress if your am optimist. I had my valiant for 3 weeks. 3 battery packs per day. She lasted 21 days... I will get out the medium 2 part epoxy and mix some fiberglass into it and put her together tomorrow. The whole battery tray came out already once on a rough landing and she patched right up. I think I might have to start looking into a balsa plane. I need more durability now that I am advancing...
Agreed, I love my Valiant! Mighty capable and stable! You have to try really hard to wreck it. That being said, that beautiful blue paint WILL get nicked here and there. If anyone knows the correct touch up color, please let me know. Also, if you have an NX 6+ controller and a programmer cable, I highly recommend setting up CROW mode for your landing flaps. It will take your landings to the next level. It’s tricky to get it working tho, read my conversation with Brian Phillips above.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO - Keep everything and you'll have spares for the next go around. Seriously...should see my surplus of "Dead" parts - it gives my wife a headache just thinking about it ;) LOL!
@@BrianPhillipsRC LOL, It's all good. I bought a new servo for $4 using my Horizon credits and the wing corner was a clean break so easy to repair. The masking tape I used pulled some paint off so I'll get some spray paint. Other than that from 6 feet away the plane still looks brand new 🙂
Potential Buyers. I am possibly an intermediate pilot this is my third plane I owned over 1 meter. This thing is a super champ. Center of Gtavity gave me a hard time so I sliced the foam out of the back of the battery tray and shoved a 3 cell 3300mah 30c battery in halfway in there for 7 minutes of full throttle flight. And about 3-5 minutes of slow full flaps landing practice. This plane is fun fun fun. One of the only planes I've had that I can go from SAFE to AS3X without changing direction or flight path. Might be because I watch Brian's setup videos.. keep watching
If you are a NEWBIE or VETERAN this PLANE is for YOU! My absolute favorite all around super dependable amazing flyer. What you see in the video is 100% how it flies. Under looks very warbird, over it will flip, flop, fly no matter what you do you'll love this!! Thank you Brian Phillips RC and Camera Crew :) Your videos inspire FLYING!!! :)
Thank for all the great info. Im new to flying and having fun. Learning to repair is a big thing at this point . Your videos helping me with everything. Thanks ..
Hi Brian! I follow your videos since the beginning (Delta Ray 1 and P-51 UMX etc) and really the info you bring is allays great before making a decision getting a new plane. This Valiant is a wonderful model with floats. That's another checkered box in favor of the Valiant. Thanks for your teachings and advice. :)
Had a prop strike, put a 10/6 apc on it and its amazing. 76 mph, and can still hover into the wind. Imo, the best high wing 3s plane you can own. My son learned on this plane, so safe performance is way better than most. We can't go flying without it.
@@BrianPhillipsRC not at all, and like yours, I still get a phenomenal amount of flight time. Moderate throttle use easily gets me 15 mins or more. I found the apc to be lighter than the stock prop too, so I'm sure that helps in many areas. Thanks for your time, it's always appreciated.
I have the version 1 Valiant. It's excellent! Mine did not come with floats. But, I do throw on some Dubro skiis for the winter and it's a joy to fly off of snow. Now I gotta charge my batteries after you watching fly again.
I came here after reading a comment in a buyer review, he suggested watching this video so I would know the correct screws to use and how to set up the plane. I am now afraid to even try flying it, and it hasn't even arrived yet! Put it this way... the last time I flew R/C I was flying jet style gliders off the cliffs in Palos Verdes. My Futaba 4 channel had a telescoping antennae about 48" long, and the receiver wire was about 36" long, and I had built a Bridi Flipper just to play around with when I didn't want to go up to PV. In fact, I have just built a Bridi Flipper from a set of plans - it's built, I just ain't covered it yet, have a (newer) Futaba 4 channel for it, and I bought this Valiant and a Spektrum 6 channel so I could get in the air again since I got the bug again. Then I watched the part about programming the radio..... (?) ..... and got totally lost. Maybe once it arrives and I can read the directions I'll understand it better. Wish me luck!
Don't get overwhelmed... it's a lot easier than what you were doing in the old Futaba days. It's hard the first couple times and then it gets easier. Just work through the entire build with us when you've got everything in hand. Don't be afraid to pause or slow down the video. You can do it! With your past experience, you'll be back in the air in no time.
@@BrianPhillipsRC Thanks Brian. But, heck, the building part don't worry me none, I saw some comment on Horizon's page about some confusion on what screws to use, and he recommended this video. I'm still awaiting delivery, got the radio already, so I'll watch your video again once I'm ready to assemble it. My concern was the programming and menus and settings I would have to figure out with the radio. Hell, trying to learn about batteries, charging them, discharging them, storage voltage, charge rates, etc, etc, etc.....AAArrrrggghhh! That's why I liked glider - two channel, no motor, not batteries to worry about (other than the receiver battery), throw it and fly it!
Brian, I am watching your assembly video as I type, my Valiant finally arrived. Let me give a shout out to Hobby Horizons, I had received my radio I had ordered at the same time, over a week and a half ago - but no plane.....? Contacted them on their chat line, and they said something had happened in shipping and it had gotten held up. I'm old enough to know that 💩 happens, I ain't the Karen type, Michael, who was on chat support, said he'd take care of it, I received it the next day. Great service! Oh, and thanks for the advice on that XBC100 battery checker - got one of those too. Anyhooo.... I've got the landing gear on, appreciate the binding cord warning, and I was just starting on the elevator and rudder, just been checking, again, which screws are which - you're right, they do not have very good (none) instructions telling me which screw is which, so popped in to make sure. Back to the assembly! BTW, I used just a tiny dab of vasoline, just enough to give a shine on the first 6" of those rods - they slid right in smooth as silk. OK. All assembled now, now to watch your radio set-up.
AWESOME! So glad we could help a tiny bit ;) Also, thanks for the shout out to Horizon Hobby - you're right, stuff happens, but they will help make it better - one of the main reasons we love working with them!
@@BrianPhillipsRC Yeah, like I said, I'm old enough not to be a Karen about it, they took care of me. Unfortunately.... you lost me on the radio set-up. You had an 8 channel, I have a 6, and the very first thing you pulled up was creating your model. Ohhhhhhkaaaayyyy..I ain't got that function on my radio. And, to be really honest, I am TOTALLY lost trying to figure out all the bells and whistles in this thing! Dual rates. Exponentials. Coupling. 🤯 I'll go through the manual (gasp!) and do the set-up as it shows in there. Thanks for your help.
just bought the valiant.still a beginner but ur channel sure helps me out.great job doing the videos so us newbs can learn ,and camera crew does awesome cause filming these planes isnt easy...thanks again for ur awesome videos.
Hey Brian, managed to get a valiant from someone leaving the club, its our first plane, love how it flies, only taking off from grass is a little tricky as a tail dragger and theres only grass at the club, I swapped out the wheels for timber wheels! Much better!
@@BrianPhillipsRC here in oregon, wind is always unkess i fly after 10pm or before 0700. Its the windiest city in usa. Even more than chicago lol. So i went flying this evening and flew an ultra mini arrows something lol. It tossed around good, was a handful so thats why im getting the valiant. Im going tomorrow early early. Live your videos btw
And on maiden it flew into a 60 foot pine tree. A permanent feature now. Its so buried in the tree and so high its there for good. Even if a hurricane came it woukdnt come out. So thats 2 of my 3 planes on maiden. Im done spending money on sonething i cannot do. Im un subbing from all rc channels and selling off my stuff
Sure is! It's scary when these planes show up as "Discontinued" and I'm like - NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, then 5 minutes later, I realize they just made a 1# change to the part number ;)
I loved mine. Dumb crash. Came out of safe low in a full bank turn. Rolled into the payment. Did I feel stupid. Will buy this one. Best plane they make for the money
I have both, I would say this. You can fly it in smaller spaces, and it truly is, imo, one of the best flying planes ever. I do t always take my timber when I fly, this is the first thing I load up every time.
Like I outlined in the video, there's pros for each, but really depends on your situation, budget, vehicle for transportation, where you fly, and if you want floats... Best answer would be BOTH ;) Timber bit.ly/3cEjplB Valiant bit.ly/3rUTtsn
Sure do!!! Fall is beautiful around here, but I want some Maple Trees that turn bright yellow and orange to go into our forest - that would be very cool
Hello Brian, quick question, is there anything wrong with the bnf template? I dont see anyone using them. Are the settings on the bnf templates not editable? TIA
Jose, the BNF templates are fine, I suspect, but when and if you have issues, I won't be able to help. The MAIN reason I don't suggest using them, is for the simple fact that it's a 1-2 minute process to build a new model, and if you're used to doing it, it get REALLY easy, then you KNOW how to use one of the most expensive tools in your RC tool bag. If you disagree, no problem, just give them a shot and let me know if you have a good experience.
Hey great vids, have watched several. I'm new to the plane hobby, been doing drones and Rc all my life but late to the party with planes oddly enough. Grew up flying with my dad in the Cessna's etc not sure what took me so long. My question...I am learning to fly now. Several hours spent on the Sim and one flight with my apprentice STS, was on the fence whether to get this one or the Carbon Cub (either the 1.3 or the 2.1) to have in my hanger for when I'm ready and as an additional plane. Which would you recommend or what's the diff in flight between the two? I'm fairly confident and will progress slowly but both of these planes appeal to me. The Draco really looks awesome but I'm waiting my turn on that one Lol. Thank you.
Thanks, and glad you're here with us!!! Okay, if you can tolerate the additional expense, and SIZE...get the Carbon Z Cub 2.1m - but full disclosure, she's a VERY capable plane, and might be pushing your limits...but it's RARE to meet a "newb" who asks...and to be honest, if you flew RC planes years ago...then this will be no problem for you. bprc.me/CarbonCubS2 - Probably a "better" choice...and a lot cheaper, but you'll want to watch the videos we have about BOTH. bprc.me/CZ_Cub - If you can tolerate the additional cost of batteries and plane and SIZE - GET IT!!! bprc.me/Draco - save this for later...it's like a museum piece, and flies great too, but wait till you can get her flying without a lot of new pilot mistakes...hangar rash will BREAK YOUR HEART on this beauty. Plus she's HEAVY! Also, here's our "beginner list" - www.brianphillipsrc.com/beginnerplanes
@@BrianPhillipsRC Thanks for your reply, much appreciated. Was also considering this Valiant in the mix as well, not sure if you caught that. Would you still recommend the Carbon Z over the Valiant or just personal preference?
Brian Is there any kind of checker that you can use on a modular. battery, a battery that does not have a main lead and a lead for balancing cells. Will tell if something is 3.7 or 3.8 storage charge or 4.2 full charge.
If you need more throw, lengthen the servo arm or increase the throw in the transmitter; don't shorten the control horn. The linkage won't have as much leverage over the surface and it will be more likely to flutter..
Brian would you recommend this or the Cub S for a first trainer? I like the Cub but I don’t like the receiver and all the hassle of adding flaps without being able to use the flap function on my NX6. I want to train with all of the functions that I have in my T-28. I can fly well in safe on my small foamies but I’m ready to graduate to a bigger plane, I’m just hesitant to move to the T28 yet because I like it so much.
This plane is a great plane, but it's a bit harder to fly. I think you would be fine, if you choose to do this plane, but you might setup MORE Expo at first, since it's a more agile plane than the cub. Valiant bit.ly/3rUTtsn Good luck!!!
Hi Brian, ditto on the compliements for your videos. Tremendous enjoyment and instruction! Question re: a Valiant receiver issue. Don't know if you field these so sorry if not the right place for it. I acquired a Valiant from my club - needed repairs and ultimater, a new fuselage. So obviuosly had to move the receiver over. All back together and ready to fly EXCEPT - the 6 channel functions all seem to work just fine. However, even though when I think I've bound it in SAFE mode (two twitches), neither SAFE nor AS2x work. The surfaces don't auto-react. I've thrown the question out to a couple sites and predominant response is throw it away. Like I said, it functions normally in all respects, just no SAFE and as a beginning power pilot, I'd like to have that. If you have any ideas or could point me in the right direction, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks again for your informative videos and all the work it must entail to create them.
Just because it's ACTIVATED, doesn't mean it's ON. You have to ACTIVATE the feature (two dances at startup), but then figure out WHICH channel you have it on, and actuate that channel to see the difference ;) You're RIGHT there...just step over the finish line ;)
Hi. Thanks for all the good information. My question is, as a neebie in airplane pilot, if l’m already a drone pilot in freestyle, can i consider to be intermediate in this style of flying ? I’m very interested by the Valiant V2 as you showed up. Thank you.
Another cool 3S 2200 plane. (I have 3 and another on the way) If a guy wants to have a variety of planes and one size pack for all that is the way to go. You can even fly the 360 Fusion Heli on the same battery.
3S 2200mAh is a great starters size for sure....but seems to be so many more planes are taking 4S, and that would be another important size to pick up, in my estimation.
@@BrianPhillipsRC Agree. I have bigger planes too but this size plane definitely has a place in my hangar and my heart. No field assembly.. just toss 'em in the car and go fly.
Hi, Another great video! Which RTF RC plane or wing under 250g would you suggest for a somewhat experienced drone pilot for his first rc plane? I have a jumper transmitter and would like to be able to use that with it also.. budget is around $200. I'm curious what you think is the best in that price range. Thanks!
Ii just bought an eflite Valiant. During unboxing the esc was just setting inside the receiver area not fed under the battery tray. Is this normal? Should it not be secured under the battery tray considering it can pull a lot of g force?
Great review as usual. I've used the V1 to recover some flying skill after a 12 year or so layoff and it's a great model. Of course as you get older you learn 10 or 12 years can't be recovered but it's fun anyway. The ESC in my V1 is strictly a no label, black shrink wrap only unit paired with the AR 636A. I think the newer ESC , or something else must have changed because the flight times you are getting are just crazy. My question has to do with the battery. In your original reviews you ended up liking the 3S 4000 smart battery. I've been using it because it seemed to add some beneficial mass (inertia) to the plane. For me it required a little bit of extra weight in the tail for the CG although it was more or less OK without it. But seeing how the V2 performs on 3S 2200 I'm rethinking the 4000. It does really make me think something is a little different in the power train. Any more insights? Of course like any learner, or re-learner plane, my V1 is getting really beat up. So I think it may be time to refresh with the V2. Sorry for the length of comment but I did get a Timber Evo after watching your Timber review. It is a great plane and my first thought was it flies like a big Valiant, not a bad thing. However, I notice that I am just getting 7 minutes on the recommended 4S 3200 smart packs and the ESC gets very hot to the touch. I've moved the ESC all the way forward per the safety bulletin Horizon put out on the heating problem. But still it seems to me it is not getting enough air flow from that small opening at the front of the rather small, tapering cowling. Also I think in real life those turbo exhausts are shaped to have external air flow lower the pressure drop across the exhaust to help reduce turbine back pressure (just a guess). In other words in this model those two scale exhausts (they are open) may be actually pulling a little air out which would mean shunting a little air flow from the path over the ESC. I'm thinking about taking a little scallop out of the bottom aft part of the cowl to get the pressure up a little ahead of the ESC. (I also wonder if plugging or popping out the exhausts wouldn't also help. They do pop right out.Have you or any of your many viewers noticed anything like this? Joe Gist
I honestly can't recall recommending a 4000mAh for the Valiant (v1) but I'll take your word for it. I'd stick with 2200 3S, but only because I ride them till they're EMPTY - LOL ;) As for the cooling on the ESC in the Turbo Timber Evo...I've heard of issues people have had, but I've never had this issues myself...the builtin cam our AFTER we were done with our review and we had moved on to the next planes well before this came up. I would avoid over complicated solutions, but if you think cutting in holes to make the exhaust vents work better, that would be very cool!
@@BrianPhillipsRC The discussion of the 4000mAH battery was in the Valiant second thoughts video of 28 January, 2021. You suggested the larger pack might be good for winder days. However I flew my Valiant yesterday with the 2200 pack. I flew very well all things considered so I'm with on the 2200 pack being just right for this plane. Thanks for the great reviews!
Looks like a real sweetheart to fly. Very beautiful plane. Definitely not going to be the battery companies favorite 😂. As always, another enjoyable video.
Hey Brian, were you able to set up CROW on the valiant? After moving the left aileron from the original Y cable to its own channel (ch 6), and changing the aircraft type to 2ail-1ele, I got crow to work in the flap system menu, but SAFE no longer works on the left aileron. Just the right aileron. So the right wing still tries to level the plane and stabilize, but not the left. Crow works just fine tho. I'm using an NX6, and the original receiver that came with the VALIANT V2. It does not have all those extra forward programming menus like on your other vid. I know I can unlock the programming on it if necessary. But, can SAFE work on the stock receiver/programming?
SAFE can still run this plane on ONE aileron, but the effect may appear to be muted, same is true for AS3X. If you want to REALLY make it work, you have to FACTORY RESET the AR631, then go all the way through setup as though it was a PNP plane. You MAY have to update firmware on the AR631 to do this, then the choice should be available from Forward Programming. Since I haven't done it myself, I say "Should"...sorry I can't speak from personal experience on this one.
@@BrianPhillipsRC no worries! I had the programmer cable so I did the reset yesterday, and yes I had to upgrade(downgrade 1 version) to get it to kick off the factory reset. All worked well after re-learning the service configuration in forward programming. Thanks!
Hi Brian! I have one question for you. Do you think is possible to use the receiver that comes in the Valiant and place it in the FMS Sky Trainer Cessna 182? Thanks
V1 or V2? Might need to flip a direction of output, but should be able to do it. If V1, and if you need to do this, flip a direction of output, use one of these... I just picked up a Valient used from someone... my question is, to what extent will I be able to set up my DX7 DSM2 (old school) transmitter to take advantage of the different AS3X and SAFE modes? I don't have near the options of an NX8... I can tell you that I have set up the Eflite Micro Cub S2 to be able to take advantage of the 3 different flight modes. Do you have any suggestions or video recommendations... other than the obvious which would be to upgrade my radio? Thanks
You should be able to make it work. Just setup the radio and you can activate SAFE Select with the binding procedure... AS3X will be on no matter what.
@@BrianPhillipsRC Thanks Brian. Yes I did get it working. I am bummed that I can't set flight modes or be able to turn as3x off... I am really now considering upgrading to the NX8 and call it a day!
As usual an outstanding and very thorough flite, build and setup video. 👍 Great filming. Brian, you left me confused (! 29:00) your recommended slats if one were to get the TT EVO but then talked about extra sensitivity if you used the slats. So, what do you recommend slat wise for the TT EVO slats or no slats. Pros and cons? Wish they didn't have to be glued on. I have them on my UMX TT and wish I could take them on and off to make flite comparisons. Thanks.
Hey Brian. Do you know if a new Night Timber is coming out soon or any other plane that lights up like that coming out soon? If not then I guess I'm going to buy the old one. Thank you.
If you're pouring concrete, you'll want to plan for a lot more than a Valiant. If you can handle the cost, I'd do 300 feet. (Ours is about 275 with a little grade change.) Width matters roo. Ours is about 10.5 at the narrowest and it's tight. You can land a Valiant in probably 100 feet though.
Love to see you fly in craaazy wind someday. I really enjoy it. Hovering and flying backwards is kinda fun to try. Would make a great video. It’s the night Timber for me on a windy day .🥰
We have some "Dungeon Tours" if you're curious. We haven't done one in a while, since we're just completing a construction project in our basement, and getting ready to start the next one. ruclips.net/video/BaJ7xT5T7_U/видео.html - This one is the most recent, but it's still a lot of planes ago. ruclips.net/video/zb38racmZTs/видео.html - One from before this... ruclips.net/video/KjwRvPbITMg/видео.html - Older still, right when moving to our new place... ruclips.net/video/FeigMSWCGcs/видео.html - From the old house...oldest still... We are considering making another "Dungeon Tour" update video soon, but it will be a bit more involved, since we're more spread out now due to recent and upcoming construction projects. Keep an eye out.
Great video as always. I am with you 100%. How hard is it to tie the screws/bags to letters and label in the manual. Geesh. Looks like a nice plane. Still deciding between it and the Timber Evo.
Love the look of that plane and i know they fly amazing but i passed on it cause of the bottom loading battery nonsense! quite making those type plane battery locations eflite
@@BrianPhillipsRC my buddies kept on telling me to get the Timber Get the Timber over n over and i said i will when they wise up and make it a Top Loader. So now the Evolution Timber Forces me to Commit Now! Damn it.
Hey Brian nice flying as always! I have a stupid question that I've been embarrassed to ask for some time now but I gotta know because I'm getting ready to go fly my FMS 182 Cessna after I crashed it and repaired it. BTW I took your advice and went with a Spektrum AR630 for the Cessna running it from my NX6. So my question is...what are "take off flaps and landing flaps ", what do they look like on the plane? I set up my flaps with a 2 second delay following a tutorial on RUclips I just hope I'm putting them in the correct position at the right time. Thanks in advance buddy
Nice video (of course). You spoke to battery safety and I agree Spektrum is an outstanding battery. Curious... you have many many batteries and you keep them in your kitchen area. If one unfortunately caught fire (heavens forbid) it would do more harm in the living area of the house than in the basement or garage areas. Your thoughts as I keep mine (spektrum :) ) in the basement.
Where they're seen, they will be noticed. Where unseen, they will be missed. Better to see a problem and know how to respond than let a fire burn away for about 30 minutes or 1 hour before you realize it's going. That's how people get killed. My grandparents had a fire in their basement and thank God they were able to escape, but they did lose the house and lots of personal items. If the fire would have started in the kitchen, my Grandpa would have know about it. That's also to assume we'll have a fire, but I get what you're saying too... Just my 2 cent's. Don't want to make recommendations to people about this sort of life or death item, since I don't want to have that on my conscience if someone would ever get hurt in a fire.
Yes, but it's not as linear a correction as you might think. There's lots of occasions that throttle is not speed sensitive enough to prevent a porpoise effect.
Great showcase flight with wind. 😊 V1 Valiant has been in my hanger for about a year - sweet, smooth flyer. Hey Brian, any chance you could do a video on TX switchology? That is, switch selection, direction, best practices, etc. Would really like to understand your process & setup for this.
I kinda DO that already with Radio Setup, but honestly, it's more a preference thing, and what I got used to over the years, so kinda easy for folks to adjust to their own preferences I hope.
Receiver. Old was AR636A or AR636AB and new is AR631 with Forward Programming and more telemetry data. I also can't honestly remember if the old one included floats or not...
I'm not a fan of the Evo 1.5 is to large for me. I like the valient and the night Timber I just can't make up my mind what one I like better as a second plane from my Aeroscout
It absolutely blows my mind that a company like this does not label the screws. I can only guess at how many brand new planes were ruined because of using the wrong screws.
I didn't have any issue with the wing screws...BUT I don't take the wing off and put it back on every time I take it out either. Some people do, I suppose.
I hesitate between the Valiant and the Cherokee, I mostly fly motorgliders and there is a 60 dollars difference between the 2, I can't make my choice between these 2 planes, the Cherokee is more beautiful, the Valiant looks more manageable and universal. Who can help me?
The Valiant is a more "capable" plane, while the Cherokee is more detailed, scale looking, and flies so good slow, which I really enjoy. the Valiant, is more aerobatic capable, and will land in more a grass clearing then a runway, while the Cherokee will want a pretty decent runway to keep the nose gear in good shape. Brian I love what you've got going on. What a great hobby that I've enjoyed since I was a young kid as well. Do you work in the model airplane industry? And are you on Instagram? Thanks Ryan
I'm an industrial scale technician by trade and do this full time (50-60 hours a week), but some would say we work in the rc industry from our RUclips channel. I would like to make the later my "Full time gig" but we're not quite there yet ;)
BrianPhillipsRC - insta, but I don't do much on it - We have the link in the RUclips banner on our page....just click on my FACE and you'll see the link ;)
Thank you! We work hard to produce helpful content, that also shows my very real enthusiasm for this wonderful hobby!
Keep at it. This is a skill that can't be bought, and that's one of the reasons it's so dang appealing to me ;)
Thanks for being here with us!
Really appreciate the commentary and letting us know how much power you’re using in the various maneuvers, landings etc. I’ve progressed from hopping my planes on landings to smooth and confident thanks to your videos.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks Philip!
The Valiant is the best kept secret in the Horizon lineup. It has an near-symmetrical wing profile and almost no dihedral, which makes it extremely aerobatic. There are two weaknesses I saw in my Valiant:
1) The tail seems very flexy to me.
Steve
Thank you.
Yes! Only issue I've had with leading edge tape, is that if you use a thin tape, it can get a bit "Uglified" over time ;)
Also, here's a trick - if you want to strengthen the wing...use TAPE along the top, prestress the wing (Hang it between two chair backs, and make the fuse heavy), and apply the tape, and it will HOLD as you unstress the wing (take the weight of the fuse) - works almost as good as a SPAR - Actually, it's pretty cool to see work ;) I did this on my ARCUS M, but it was just not quite enough on that plane.
I decided to go for it. It came in Friday night and I was flying Saturday at noon. What a nice flying plane!
Already cartwheeled it. Needed a new servo horn and trying out your foam tac repair.
NICE! Thanks Kevin!!! Glad you're getting good clean transitions from SAFE to AS3X - that's a sign that your mechanical trims are SPOT ON ;)
If you are a NEWBIE or VETERAN this PLANE is for YOU! :)
I love mine. I’m going to my club In a few minutes to fly it. I recently painted some checkerboard on it and I swear it goes faster now!
LOL - Nice, like on the Ragers ;)
Thank for all the great info. Im new to flying and having fun. Learning to repair is a big thing at this point . Your videos helping me with everything. Thanks ..
Awesome! Glad you're here with us, and if you like seeing repairs, I'm you guy - LOL ;)
Thank you so much for this video. I just got a nx8 and was lost after reading the manual. This was a lifesaver!!!
I’ve had mine for a couple years now. I put foam inside my wheel pants it made it so quiet it worked great. I love flying the valiant. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
NICE! Like the idea. I need to try it out!
Brian, you may be the hardest working RC reviewer on the planet. Seems there's always a new video waiting for me from you!
Thanks! More coming - We have about 6 new boxes, plus the one that we did yesterday, and another on the way shortly thereafter ;)
Brian is the best, by far! I enjoy his videos and generous "how to" instructions.
Awesome! Glad you've been with us for so long! Thanks for your support, and glad we can be of some assistance, even after all these years!
Had a prop strike, put a 10/6 apc on it and its amazing. 76 mph, and can still hover into the wind. Imo, the best high wing 3s plane you can own. My son learned on this plane, so safe performance is way better than most. We can't go flying without it.
Nice! That's a good size prop!!! Does your motor get hot?
@@BrianPhillipsRC not at all, and like yours, I still get a phenomenal amount of flight time. Moderate throttle use easily gets me 15 mins or more. I found the apc to be lighter than the stock prop too, so I'm sure that helps in many areas. Thanks for your time, it's always appreciated.
I have the version 1 Valiant. It's excellent! Mine did not come with floats. But, I do throw on some Dubro skiis for the winter and it's a joy to fly off of snow. Now I gotta charge my batteries after you watching fly again.
Thanks for reminding me!!! I was seriously unsure, and felt bad for not knowing ;)
Coupling. 🤯
I'll go through the manual (gasp!) and do the set-up as it shows in there.
Thanks for your help.
just bought the valiant.still a beginner but ur channel sure helps me out.great job doing the videos so us newbs can learn ,and camera crew does awesome cause filming these planes isnt easy...thanks again for ur awesome videos.
Glad to hear it! Thanks for the feedback! Great plane, by the way. Glad you have this beauty!
Hey Brian, managed to get a valiant from someone leaving the club, its our first plane, love how it flies, only taking off from grass is a little tricky as a tail dragger and theres only grass at the club, I swapped out the wheels for timber wheels! Much better!
I just bought this. I cant wait to fly it. Such a great plane. I live in a breezy area and have no choice but to fly in 10mph on average winds
You'll be fine. If you fly around sunset, and sunrise, you might be surprised how much that improves your circumstances. Good luck!
Glad to see that they made a V2. This is one of my favorite planes of all time!
Sure is! It's scary when these planes show up as "Discontinued" and I'm like - NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, then 5 minutes later, I realize they just made a 1# change to the part number ;)
Wow that kit has beautiful details in the wing Revit ECT wow i'am going to purchase one soon 🎉
Thanks, and when you do, here's our link, if you'd like to support us.... bprc.me/Valiant
Brian Thank you for the recommendation on this plane. I'm glad I built it before you posted. Saved me $20.00. 😉
You're welcome ;)
I loved mine. Dumb crash. Came out of safe low in a full bank turn. Rolled into the payment. Did I feel stupid.
Will buy this one.
Best plane they make for the money
Sorry to hear about your loss!!! Glad you gonna get another.
I have the V1 of this and it’s my favourite plane. It does pretty much everything well.
Totally!
My friend just mastered the aeroscout what would be a good next plane the turbo T Evo, Valiant, or air tractor?
I have the Conceando and a UMX Turbo, would you pick this V2 or the Turbo Timber Evo for next plane?
I have both, I would say this. You can fly it in smaller spaces, and it truly is, imo, one of the best flying planes ever. I do t always take my timber when I fly, this is the first thing I load up every time.
Like I outlined in the video, there's pros for each, but really depends on your situation, budget, vehicle for transportation, where you fly, and if you want floats... Best answer would be BOTH ;)

I can see the corn 🌽 is still standing there.

I love the Valiant Looks good fly's great Nice flying Brian Great job as always Camera Crew 🔥👍✌️
Agreed, and Thanks Erric!
V1 is the bird i relearned to fly on! Owned it for 1 month! 🤯 THEN went straight back into acrobatics & 3d. Aint l👀ked back since! 😁

YEP - This plane is a keeper!
Great video on the Valiant. Thanks.
Thanks!
Would this be good for my #2?? it has the features I've been thinking about for my next step..
Sure. It's a great plane!
bprc.me/Valiant
Watching that plane almost makes me wanna buy one of the Hangar 9 versions as I never done balsa
I want it too ;)
Wow I am really loving this one! My colors and it looks beautiful flying. One day I gotta get me a fixed wing.
It's a good option, for sure!

Is there any kind of checker that
you can use on a modular. battery,
a battery that does not have a main
lead and a lead for balancing cells.
Will tell if something is 3.7 or 3.8
storage charge or 4.2 full charge.
I'm sorry, I don't understand your question...
Simple 2S/3S Charger amzn.to/2ruHHKe
OR
XBC Checker & Servo Tester bit.ly/3e8mnA6
???
I use a long flat 3200 mah in my valiant. Fits snug in the battery compartment and cg balances perfect. And get a much longer fly time.
Great! If it fits, it ships ;)
If you need more throw, lengthen the servo arm or increase the throw in the transmitter; don't shorten the control horn. The linkage won't have as much leverage over the surface and it will be more likely to flutter..
This has not generally been my experience.
THX for the helpfull Video. Could you show an DX6i setup/programming the flaps? I think there is an misstake in the manual.
I don't have a DX6i, very sorry, so I can't answer your question. Very sorry to report this.
Valiant bit.ly/3rUTtsn
Good luck!!!
You have to ACTIVATE the feature (two dances at startup), but then figure out WHICH channel you have it on, and actuate that channel to see the difference ;)
You're RIGHT there...just step over the finish line ;)
Thanks for the info and encouragement!
Hi. Thanks for all the good information. My question is, as a neebie in airplane pilot, if l’m already a drone pilot in freestyle, can i consider to be intermediate in this style of flying ? I’m very interested by the Valiant V2 as you showed up. Thank you.
If you can fly a simulator plane then yes
Another cool 3S 2200 plane. (I have 3 and another on the way) If a guy wants to have a variety of planes and one size pack for all that is the way to go. You can even fly the 360 Fusion Heli on the same battery.
3S 2200mAh is a great starters size for sure....but seems to be so many more planes are taking 4S, and that would be another important size to pick up, in my estimation.
@@BrianPhillipsRC Agree. I have bigger planes too but this size plane definitely has a place in my hangar and my heart. No field assembly.. just toss 'em in the car and go fly.
This plane is such a sweet heart. I wonder what V3 will be like. I picked up the dubro park flyer skis and plan on getting in a bunch of snow ops.
It really is, and I hardly ever it out!!! I wish I had more free time to fly...and it wasn't dark at 4:30-5PM! Spring, where are you??? ;)

Guys, awesome video as always. Thank you.
Thanks Stephen!
Thanks!
Sub 250g? I'd get the Timber UMX if you're going for Sub 250g... Jumper will be a bit of a pain to setup, but you CAN do it.
Timber bit.ly/3cEjplB
I'd stick with 2200 3S, but only because I ride them till they're EMPTY - LOL ;)
As for the cooling on the ESC in the Turbo Timber Evo...I've heard of issues people have had, but I've never had this issues myself...the builtin cam our AFTER we were done with our review and we had moved on to the next planes well before this came up.
3S packs, and still almost unlimited vertical! Amazing, right?!!?

If V2...use forward programming to DEFAULT the Rx and then just set it up like a new PNP model!
Brian I noticed the push rods tubes for elevator and rudder rods move when you give inputs. Mine does the same. Is this normal?
It CAN be normal. If there is any issues with controls, I would brace them, but in this case, this plane is just rock solid.
Maybe set the full flap (Landing flap) position down more for slowing it down more on landing since it seems to really float so well?
sure - I could do that. I was concerned it would look dumb, but I guess, who cares if it flies better.
does this plane fly well slowly? like could i fly under 50% throttle with flaps down comfortably?
Hi would this be a better option over the eflite t28 1.1 for my second plane?
As usual an outstanding and very thorough flite, build and setup video. 👍 Great filming.
Brian, you left me confused (! 29:00) your recommended slats if one were to get the TT EVO but then talked about extra sensitivity if you used the slats. So, what do you recommend slat wise for the TT EVO slats or no slats. Pros and cons? Wish they didn't have to be glued on. I have them on my UMX TT and wish I could take them on and off to make flite comparisons. Thanks.
I recommend installing slats, but they do make handling the TT Evo harder.
Hey Brian. Do you know if a new Night Timber is coming out soon or any other plane that lights up like that coming out soon? If not then I guess I'm going to buy the old one. Thank you.
Night Timber X is already out...
Brian how long a runway do i need for the Valiant 1.3 I am thinking of pouring concrete thanks
I was just thinking.....maybe I should pick this up.....here's the video. Scary. Lol!
I think I'm missing something...
Watching in school!!
GOOD! Finally learning something useful from there!!!!
@@BrianPhillipsRC Hahaha 😂
Love to see you fly in craaazy wind someday. I really enjoy it. Hovering and flying backwards is kinda fun to try. Would make a great video. It’s the night Timber for me on a windy day .🥰
I've done it a few times - I LOVE slope soaring, btw....but finding a site NOT controlled by the Army Corp of Engineers is not easy in Iowa.
Haha up here in Colorado we've already lost most of our leaves Brian, and I need to bust out the gloves to go fly this morning 😅
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! No speaking of winter ;)
Wait, No Crow Setup for the 37 feet….? Let’s see it! Looks super cool when setup on the valiant. 3s makes me kinda want it. Looks fun.
Nope - LOL - Maybe some day ;)
I have a 40 acre off grid second home. Is this plane suitable for dirt road take offs and landings?
For RC planes??? I would sure hope so!!!
@@BrianPhillipsRC I was thinking I might need to remove the wheel pants and install Timber tundra tires.
Do you have a video of your hanger?
Damn that plane is beautiful
Great video as always. I am with you 100%. How hard is it to tie the screws/bags to letters and label in the manual. Geesh. Looks like a nice plane. Still deciding between it and the Timber Evo.
Amen - Exactly! Used to be there was an ACTUAL size drawing for us...like IKEA furniture ;)
I still love the plane ;)
Love the look of that plane and i know they fly amazing but i passed on it cause of the bottom loading battery nonsense! quite making those type plane battery locations eflite
Can't blame you, but this plane is sooo good, to pass over just a bottom loader :(... Either way, thanks for being here with us!
@@BrianPhillipsRC my buddies kept on telling me to get the Timber Get the Timber over n over and i said i will when they wise up and make it a Top Loader. So now the Evolution Timber Forces me to Commit Now! Damn it.
Have you ever used that ix20? Or wanted to? I been watching a master series and they look super user friendly.
I want to use an iX20, EXCEPT that most RC fliers are not on the iX'es yet, so for now and a while longer, NX8 for me ;)
@@BrianPhillipsRC me too then. Just for now but I think I want one. I'll get it as soon as I see one in your hands.
Can I bind my NXS from a rtf aeroscout to this plane
yes
I have recently got this. Is it just the different receiver between v1 and v2. I got a great deal im wondering if I got v1
If it's a V1 you'll have an AR636B...if it's V2 you'll have an AR631
@@BrianPhillipsRC Brilliant thanks. Yeah I double checked I have the V2 as it has the AR631.
Brian explained it from here: 1:28:00
Nice video (of course).
@@BrianPhillipsRC Great response and makes perfect sence.....cents too ! Best to the camera crew too !!
It’s amazing plane ✈️
Power equals Climb. Pitch controls speed. Us private pilots know the nose always pitches up with power.
yes
Why would anyone thumbs down this chanel or plane. Please leave.
Love it Terry!!! You da man!
Can one add a mix of down elv to thr at high settings to give relief of unwanted climb?
All depends on your transmitter if it's a computerized one you can do anything you want with it
Yes, but it's not as linear a correction as you might think. There's lots of occasions that throttle is not speed sensitive enough to prevent a porpoise effect.
HI BRIAN AND CAMARA CREW 👍
Hey there!
I am flying an apprentice. It's my first plane.
What do you think is a better second plane?
Valiant or Turbo Timber Evolution?
Valiant is much easier to fly imo
Did anyone figure out what to do with the loose ESC - I don't understand why it is not secured in place
Whats the difference between this and the v1 besides the reciever?
Nothing that I know of.
13. Going to the bowl
Nice!
How do you fly this plane I’m so bad I lost all of my props for the volantex trainstar even the spare propellers 😢😢
Mini trainstar not tiny trainstar
You think the trainstar is bad stay away from its war bird cousins....
What do you mean??
Get a simulator and practice. There is no other way. You need to do the work but good news is it’s fun!
Ok
Good first plane?
You could pick a lot worse, but it's pretty capable for a beginner plane, in my opinion.

Haha love the video.
Hah u so reminds me of a Jack Black voice over 😂😂😂😂😅
I get that all the time ;)
What are the differences between V1 and V2 please?
Some think they're too impractical to transport...but if you ever get a chance to fly them, please do take it (or maybe you have already???)
@@BrianPhillipsRC no not yet. I do here great things about it. Having the battery top load is miles better then the old ones
The batteries are like. the ones that
go in the XK127 helicopter..
Really?
It absolutely blows my mind that a company like this does not label the screws. I can only guess at how many brand new planes were ruined because of using the wrong screws.
cant agree more on that!
Is it really a deal breaker though? 😂
If it means there's a chance of putting them in wrong and having the plane crash on the maiden, then yes.@@Apollo_Music
What do you mean V2? Is there a V2 of this plane?
Yes - V1 had the AR636. V2 has the new AR631 - not a ton more different, but a lot more telemetry on the V2.
@@BrianPhillipsRCThank you very much Brian. I love your videos, very helpful. I am buying this plane (v2) next week.
I feel the urge to buy another plane
OOOPs ;) Did it again!!!
I surely hope they fixed the wing issues. one of my favorite planes but the wings are a nighmare. screws are easily stripped.

I'm going to miss brians videos when he's in prison locked away....it's only a matter of time the lipo battery police get him and toss away the key.
LOL!!!! Maybe I could build a Dynam or Two - LOL ;)
Brian I love what you've got going on. What a great hobby that I've enjoyed since I was a young kid as well. Do you work in the model airplane industry? And are you on Instagram? Thanks
