- OFF THE RAILS is the true story of Darius McCollum, a man with Asperger’s syndrome whose overwhelming love of transit has landed him in jail 32 times for impersonating New York City bus drivers and subway conductors and driving their routes. As a boy, Darius found sanctuary from school bullies in the subway. Befriended by transit workers, who taught him to drive trains, Darius drove a packed train 8 stops by himself at age 15, making all the stops and announcements. Over the next three decades, Darius commandeered hundreds of trains and buses, staying en route and on schedule, without ever getting paid. Although Darius has never damaged any property or hurt anyone, he has spent 23 years in maximum security prison. Darius’ recidivism embodies the criminal justice system’s failure to channel the passions of a harmless, mentally challenged man into a productive career and purposeful life.

How the heck do the NYC people not think to just hire him? Give the man a route and a schedule and he'll do it for the rest of his life, costing you less than he would in prison and providing value to the community. Maybe there's more to the story than this documentary shows, but as-is that seems like a no-brainer.

It really sucks to be/have a disability. They should of taken that in to consideration. He would of been fine @ the museum bc he was happy working, that's how he seen it, there. No one would of known he had been in jail if they keeped there mouth shut & told him the same thing. Government does it all the time.

i feel like a big part of his obsession is the recognition in the media, as was mentioned hes a narcissist. he is way to unstable to be trusted to be responsible for peoples safety. dont get me wrong i loved the doco and he is a very interesting man but the answer is no.

yeah, why didnt the transportation companies ( trains and bus companies ) why didnt they train him, certify him and give him a job especially early on when he was volunteering las he clearly showed so much promise, dedication and skill and knowledge on these machines and the systems !!! now hes actually in a mental institution indefinitely.
This was such an easy fix. He did not have to end up this way and it is shame on NYC for ignoring the solution. He could have worked as a volunteer and then shadowed a drive a few times a week.

I’m a bus driver and he needs to come to work for us. My company desperately needs him cause our drivers get burnt out quick and stop coming to work. Driving the bus is extremely stressful but he seems like he would come to work everyday.

My heart heart hurts so much for Darius after watching this documentary. He should NEVER have been jailed when he was 15. The MTA employees not only KNEW he was working on the Subway, they would phone him at 5 am and ask him to do a shift. They trained him how to operate the trains and then they abandoned him and he was imprisoned, starting off this tragic chain of events. The Authorities failed miserably, I don't see that he was a danger, he was definitely on the spectrum and was very meticulous and thorough.

The judge that gave him 5 years is unbelievably SHAMEFUL for looking up Asperger’s on the internet,(!!) and then identifying him as not having it!! Who his she to say that?? She IS NOT A DOCTOR!! A complete injustice to this man! Disgusting! He is so sweet and kind and if you understand Asperger’s syndrome these people are HIGHLY INTELLIGENT and fixate on one/two things in their lives. Take a look at Oprah's new documentary about the Healthcare system. White people can have Aspergers but not black people. Blacks are seen as criminals period. Drug addiction was seen as a crime when black people were addicted and thrown in prison. White soccer moms who are addicted are treated like they have a medical condition. No jail.

Asperger’s doesn’t cause you to commit felonies. What if he stole a bus and ran into you killing your family members? Would you say the same thing or would you be mad this untrained man wasn’t stopped?
Common sense tells me this is a decent man with a passion to work in transportation, could someone please assist him in being a certified driver. That Judge who sentenced him to 5 years after disregarding his condition needs ito be sentenced herself.
Imagine if an attorney in her court claimed to be an expert on a subject based upon hm/her "reading a web site"! The judge would have lost her mind. But SHE can do such a thing. I hate people!
I live in NYC, and, yes, the public transport driver can make a difference in a person's day. This man is the sweetest, absolute best man. I'm just....in awe. He's such a sweetheart. CLEARLY, needs to be hired by the MTA or other transportation system nearby and PAID and will live happily ever after! Please!!!!
Darius! After seeing Off the Rails i wrote to him and we became pen pals, i lost track of him when i moved but Darius is such an amazing person! I also have a cousin with autism and he is a lot like Darius, the ability to be soo dedicated and committed to a singular focus is truly inspiring.

Unless one tries to work with people with learning disabilities, they'll never understand their vulnerability. They are so many like Darius with different abilities and would be purposely given roles under supervision and would do a great job.

The Systems failed him horrifically because they failed to find a way to develop an individual structure geared towards his Disability of the Autism Spectrum Aspergers. The money that was spent on him being incarcerated could have been redirected towards a remedy geared towards his unique situation. Because he is highly intelligent he was virtually viewed as normal. They couldn't put him in a category of mental illnesses so they sort out jail as an option and miserably failed him. There are probably more people in jail with the same spectrum of Autism, but for some other compulsive disorder, that they can't diagnose.
If nothing they do works, work on changing the way he is viewed by the criminal justice system. He should never be in the prison system. The way his brain is wired is not his fault. Although, he is a fundamental high level Man whom is Autistic, he cannot comprehend fully

This man thrives on routine and repetition so why not give him a job in the transit system and it's guaranteed he'd be your best and most reliable employee. He is not a thief or violent. Putting him danger in the prison system seems very wrong.

Had that not happened, Darius might have become an MTA employee and have been retired by now. He probably would have worked until he died but you know what I'm saying! The transit system is partially responsible for his fixation, it’s not something they choose to do, for him the system is as necessary as breathing is for you!
He actually needed professional treatment, if they had of done that they could have saved a small fortune, problem is, America is just as addicted to locking people away as he is to train’s and buses.
Compassion is something that’s free to share, it’s ironic that so many can’t seem to afford towards others yet freely take when ever offered.
I was on Rinker's island with him back in 2006,his knowledge on trains was outstanding.He didn't have money on his books, but i would always break bread with him, he was very intelligent but he didn't have an ego.We should thank God he had a love for trains and not Airplanes.YA Dig😎

I feel bad for his mother, waiting all those years for her only son to come back home. If only he got the support he needed when he was released from prison, he would have possibly been able to be with his mother during the time she had left. There are far more troublesome criminals that were so good at what they do, they now work for government agencies. He should have been made a transit employee and supervised while at work for his disability, like all persons with disabilities who work jobs. jail doesn't fix his problem it fixes NYC's problem. I was actually a officer in rikers when he was there a few times we spoke. He is a decent man. He never was late he just wanted to operate the different modes of transport.
Oh snap!!!!!!!! I know this guy. I am from Brooklyn and got on his bus a few times. He is 100% GOOD PEOPLE. Friendly driver, good driver and he would always let me ride for free when I did not have the fare. Good dude.

he's a nice man and i was asking myself same question but later i realized that as someone with autism he would not be able to get a license. this is driving thousands people a day who's lives would be in his hands. they had other options like that museum, prob. would save his life. heartless people!

If you think the driving is the only thing involved with the transport system, then it makes sense why you made that comment... just know there is ALOT more then just driving when it comes to running the whole public transport. I absolutely Love this guy!! Was locked up with him in 2002, the best human on earth, he Def would be a multi billionaire if the sh*tty system weren't rigged. He's engineer level intelligent and in essence is an asset to society, but they wound up experimenting on him rather than place him in special interests like (other) kids get... Darius is a victim not a criminal. He was trained at an early age on how to operate the train therefore he was groomed by varies employees. Yet they have labeled him a criminal. It was fine for him to hang out there and included him in the day to day operations. They should be sued for their role in grooming him with major responsibilities. He is a victim who suffered major trauma due to their actions.
The ‘system’ thoroughly failed this man and my hearts breaks for him I cannot fathom why they didn’t just employ him, it makes absolutely zero sense!
His Lawyers failed him , He was sentence to five years by someone who had no clues what his illness was about . He should be compensated for that .

My son has Asperger’s and this just breaks my heart. People with Asperger’s have the biggest heart for people just like my son and to know he is being punished for it is sad. They could’ve just hired him and let him do what he loves. It makes me wonder about my sons future. They just throw his diagnosis out the window instead of helping him cope with society.

Sad they didn't want to help him nor try to find a way. It would have taken too much time. There are people who are within the Autism Spectrum who are highly intelligent. Because of this they are perceived that if they can focus in areas that require critical thinking, they must know what they are doing and are responsible. That is where the confusion is. Yes. They're doing higher level things that some people who are not in the Spectrum, and appear ok... But, their thought processing is configured differently....That's what is happening with him.
He needed an individual study to analyze the way he is wired. From that he could be understood better. He is now in his 60's possibly alone and still misunderstood by some. They wasted the talent and expertise of a highly intelligent individual who has Aspergers, which is a part of the Autism Spectrum. I Pray 🙏🏾 for him to find some happiness and solace. I Pray someone can help him realize a dream deferred by a Society that doesn't take time with those who have unusual disabilities.....We have a lot of work to do.....

it is very sad, but i do side with legal for one reason: Darius KNOWS it was wrong to steal, he knew he was taking trains and buses illegally, so on that end, yes i can see where he deserved to be locked up, but again, this would have never happened if they'd just trained him and certified him officially, but like they said Darius likes to do what Darius wants to do, so in some ways, yes he does deserve to be locked up. on a side note, the story he tells about his mother, vs. what his mother says about him, is quite sad too - she was not exactly kind to him, she harshly punished him for even the smallest of things, things that were not even bad behavior!

Just watched the short version of this video that @TheNYCStoryteller did and learned about this beautiful human being. He appears to be kind, loving, intelligent, and just an overall good guy. There has to be something that he can do with his gift instead of being in prison! I think as long as he can be connected to trains or buses, he’ll be OK. it’s unfortunate that he didn’t get to be treated like the guy who they made the movie for, “catch me if you can“. Give this man the job that he loves doing. He is clearly not a danger to the community & this as been proven so many times, as he would take the busses/trains & stop at each stop to let passengers alight & get on, collect the fares, take them to where they need to go, following the route, then at the end of the day, return the vehicle to depot, not hurting anyone, not causing any damage & by the sounds of it, do the job million times better & more professional & friendlier then their own staff.
Rather than labelling this man as a "criminal & a danger to the community", this scumbag of a transport Authority should be more concerned about their clear incompetence, lack of proper security procedures & clear breach of Health & Safety guidelines that allowed a member of the public to be able to get onto their property & do this over & over again for over 30 years, because if someone did want to do harm, then a lot of people's lives could be put at risk & these scumbags have let it happen.
All this man wants to do is follow a passion & do a job that he loves, which millions of people do every day & he as been criminalised for absolutely no reason & the way that he as been treated by his country, which say "follow your dreams" & "the land of the free" make me sick
Im sick of reading about things like this happening in America & black people being persecuted & sent to prison for ridiculous reasons & extremely long sentences. I wish no harm to the USA, but I for one will never be setting foot in that country.

The MTA's embarrassment, and vendetta against this man in order to try to mitigate that embarrassment, was far more important to them than being apart of the solution.

Whoever made the call to not hire him the first time he applied was the real criminal. He should have been welcomed with open arms! Imagine how different his life would have been if they’d only have given him a chance. This was so sad from beginning to end. It was painful to watch. And sickening to imagine him stuck in prison for so long with all those violent criminals.
Let's not forget that the employee Carl taught him how to operate the train and allowed him to operate it ALONE

@@Shannonbarnesdr1 it's a special case. I wouldn't even call it 'stealing.' Stealing is when you take something with no intention of giving it back. It was more 'unauthorized use.' But like I said, this is a truly one of a kind exceptional case.
Once again another story proving how "F" d up our system is. Here Darius wants to work! He's not on drugs like half of these real criminals. He has a disease it's not his fault, but instead of getting him the help he really needs they just throw him in jail. After he's released instead of making sure he gets the help he needs he is left to figure it out on his own, which then he falls back into his old routine because that is all he knows to survive. Our judicial system is so stupid and needs to change.

That's an excellent idea. I wonder though, due to his felonies, if he'll somehow run into roadblocks. He should definitely be a tour guide in NYC regarding buses or at another MTA based museum that would pay him.

U realize he could never get out of jail right? This wasn't a movie, this is a real man who never hurt anyone, never did drugs, the only thing he ever did was drive a bus or train for free, while everyone else got paid for doing it. 30 years of his life in prison. The United States prison system is broken and this is just another horrible story that has happened to hundreds of thousands of black men in America.

If I had a train , I'd hire Darius. He's an intelligent guy charismatic, and obviously has Aspergers. I hate that he's going to prison for these victimless crimes. If anything he needs psychological help, or a job driving a train.

This guy is incredible. I recognize it could be startling to see a teen drive a train, but after the first few times and KNOWING that he knows ALL the staff and is being legit about conducting the train appropriately, why not just HIRE him??? After watching the whole movie: its clear the NY Subway would never hire him, but WHY didn't his Lawyer & Disability Advocates help him get his CDL License to at least drive a Bus???😣🤷🏻

Frank Abagnale impersonated airline pilots forged checks for years and was finally captured by the FBI they actually came and got him out of prison and hired him to help with the logistics of theft that's just one example that I'm trying to explain to you .
That kid would have done wonders for the MTA there is no doubt in my mind about that he could have made productive changes he was so in tune with what was going on there he was so in tune complacency wasn't even on the menu with him when it came to that place common sense wake up and smell the coffee

Facts it was legit the MTA that started this. Had they trained their employees to practice proper safety percussions kid would never have been driving trains.
This chap reminds me of my father, who in his career with British Rail became the most signalbox qualified signalman in the Southern Region and he was an obsessive, he lived and breathed for British Rail but sadly British Rail spurned him late in his career when they gave him the manager's job at Edinburgh Waverley signalling centre and the unions blocked it forcing British Rail to withdraw the job offer. My father who operated the most ferocious panel in Europe at London Bridge signalbox felt the railways treated him badly and he took early retirement and finished his final years as a paid signalman chap at Swanage Railway who treated him superiorly well.

I cannot get over how a driver gave an unqualified 15yo teenager his train so he could visit his girl friend. I am pretty sure he would have been fired for that one. That is just insane. I have seen kids like him around my train. I like teaching them about the train because you can see the genuine interest.

How amazing would it have been to need to prep for like an MTA exam and be taught by this man, he probably could have helped many pass with some additional formal training. His love of transit could have shone through his teaching. His mother is an absolutely beautiful soul, Thanks for making this.

There is currently a petition circulating for his release as he has been remanded to a psychiatrist facility indefinitely. He has been labeled as a a violent mentally ill offender and is committed with slim to none possibility of being free ever again.
The MTA wants to make it so much more complicated than it has to be because they don't want to admit that he has a better safety and attendance record over the course of his criminal history then 95% of their current employees today.
If they actually showed compassion and gave this man a chance to succeed in the world he so desperately wants to belong to I think they'd be amazed at the gem of an employee he would be. He has more knowledge about New York city's transportation system then the majority of those in power.
I hate that Darius is being denied a job based on "who knows what he could do" scare tactics. Then the NYPD's on a witch hunt to hang him then and a judge who has no clue what she's saying about Asperger's syndrome can overrule a medical diagnosis?

I feel for the guy. He hasn’t harmed a soul. When he does take a train/bus he drives the route safely. I just don’t know how you give a guy life that’s never hurt anyone.

I just got a citation on the train by a transit cop who I found out was convicted of abusing his girlfriend. How does this transit cop still have his job yet this man isn’t given a job?
This was an amazing way to spend a little time…. It’s a brief and amazing spotlight on the gaps in our systems that don’t seem to have an answer for people like Darius, who despite not seeming to have an angry, mean or violent bone in his body, ends up spending the majority of his life in prison.
Wow, what an interesting film. Darius is a very Unique guy, it breaks my heart hearing his life story and his many struggles. The Justice system MUST HELP HIM, not denying his real needs. I really hope a team could help him.
The problem with this country's taxpayer-funded infrastructure is that, unfortunately, bureaucrats run it all. So, that being said, and, as you and I know, as long as you have a ginormous, fundamentally flawed, governmental system which is obstructed by financially influential (i.e. BRIBERY laughingly posing as Supremely Corrupt Court approved campaign "contributions???") multi-billionaires and THEIR agendas, then you know, for a fact, that literally, NOTHING will EVER get done in this country.
People such as Darius fall through the cracks. If this were Germany, or France, or even Britain, Darius would most likely get treatment for his disorder. But, here, in capitalistic, privatized, 'Merka ... feed the greed is, apparently, far, FAR more important than feed the people.
