  • Left alone in a Cambodian prison, Australian mother-of-two Yoshe Taylor had all but given up fighting for her release.
"I actually thought the death penalty was a much better idea than being in jail for 23 years," she says.
The local court rejected Yoshe's claims that she was set up by a drug syndicate via a dating website and she was concerned for her children's ongoing welfare.
It wasn't until a group of lawyers joined forces that the tide started to turn in Yoshe's favour.
The lawyers discovered that three other Australian victims had been scammed by the same drug syndicate and then released - but that somehow this evidence hadn’t been shared in time to rescue Yoshe from serving six years in jail.
Now back in Australia, Yoshe is sharing her story for the first time, in a warning to others about the perils of online romance.
This is a two-part Australian Story. Check out part 1 on our Australian Story playlist. bit.ly/2P3Z6FF

Perhaps it's different in Australia and Cambodia, but whenever I've flown internationally between the States and Europe or from the UK to anywhere, they always ask you straight up "did you pack your own bags? are you carrying anything given to you by someone else?" that sort of thing. It seems like if they would have asked that question and she responded "why yes, as a matter of fact, I've just been given this briefcase!" or whatever, then she would have had a way better defense. So if that is not part of Cambodian proceudure, which at least gives a mule a chance to disown responsibility for the unknown article, then really their procedure is to blame. For 4 people to get caught like that though, think of how many more must have gotten through. They wouldn't just keep sending tens of thousands of dollars worth of heroin if every courier was getting busted at the airport. Would be noble if some of those other people who'd been in touch with Max, maybe under another name, and now realize they probably carried something for him, would come forward now. Perhaps they haven't heard this story or are too embarrassed or scared to admit it.

And NEVER let your bag out of your sight. Although a hotel porter will probably come to your door to take your luggage down to the waiting taxi, do not allow this. Carry your own bags everywhere. And don't allow a "friend" you made in one of these countries to use your home address as a place to receive mailed parcels. If they tell you they don't know anybody else in the US that they could ask to accept the parcel or pick it up for them, too bad. It is not your responsibility to provide this kind of help and it is sheer folly on your part to agree to it.

Lots of people, male and female, have the name "Precious" all over Africa, from what I understand. I met several in East Africa during my visits there. Same with the names Gladness, Blessing, and Peace. Some people their Parents gave them the English word and some gave them the name in Swahili.
In India, I made friends with people called Babu, Baby, and Blesson (Blessing). I was told Babu can mean man or Baby, or even daddy and in one family the sons were named Babu and Baby. I heard a baby called Sweetie.
Lots of people in countries that were colonized by Britain, still use old English words for their literal meaning. Considering all of the names I have heard that are made up from two words in the US, calling someone Precious isn't so strange. Precious Max had parents who thought he was precious so called him that. A lot of Christians call their kids Peace, Precious etc. in East Africa Calling a boy Babu or Baby is kind of like when people call their baby girl mama.

I think justice isn't done at all in these kind of stories. What kind of investigation is happening in these countries? They catch a woman and say she knew what she was carrying. Done. Go to rotten prisons for God knows how long. Thirty -five years ago I travelled on my own to different countries. On a ship from Athens to Israel, there were drug dealers on bord. I slept on the deck because I had no money for a cabin. I slept on my rucksack. When I arrived in Haifa, the Israelian authorities check thoroughly my rucksack. They asked me if everything in there was mine. I answered: I don't know. I slept in the open maybe someone put something in. And while you are wasting time with an innocent person, the drug dealers have already left the harbour.

To the lawyers who won Yoshe her freedom, you are absolutely solid gold human beings.
To the AFP: WTF? After 2 people that you KNOW were carrying smack for the same people as Yoshe have charges dropped in Australia, you leave the third person to rot in a Cambodian jail? With a liaison officer in Cambodia you did not even send an email saying the 2 caught in Oz were clearly duped, pass that info to your Cambodian 'interlocutors' (as the DFAT people call them in cables) and say get this poor woman freed ASAP. Too much to ask? Pissweak performance.
After the Bali 9 a reasonable person would expect that the AFP had learned their lesson about landing Australians abroad in the shit instead of arresting them upon landing in Oz. Or is that the quid pro quo in these cooperation cases? The AFP have to give their Cambodian partners (or Indonesian partners in the case of the Bali 9) some glory? Give them a scalp? There needs to be a high-level inquiry into the AFP's international cooperation program as a whole to find out how and why this "bureaucratic error" (the failure to advise the Cambodian authorities of the failed prosecutions in Oz and why they failed!) occurred. The inquiry must not only look at Yoshe's case but ALL SIMILAR CASES (who knows how many other Australian have been left in hellholes O/S by AFP actions, or inactions, as the case may be. And there needs to be serious and ongoing follow-up to make sure this doesn't ever happen again.
Finally to women - and men - who think they are finding true love on the internet - especially those (and not wishing to be unkind but let's be honest here) who are, in physical attraction terms vastly less attractive than the person they think is in love with them - be realistic. Why on earth would that person be interested in you? If it seems too good to be true, it is. At best, you get to chalk one up for experience. At worst, how does 25 years of cold rice and rat meat sound?

Perhaps Yoshe being busted and jailed in Cambodia was the quid pro quo for the 2 allowed to fly from Cambodia to Australia. In any case, there should be a thorough independent inquiry into the AFP's international activities because clearly the culture that delivered the Bali 9 to their fate - and Yoshe to years in a Cambodian prison - still prevails.

What a crazy story! As an expat in Korea, I’ve visited South East Asia a lot (Cambodia is a lovely country, and of course, it wasn’t Cambodians running the scam). When possible, I try to visit foreigners in prisons (it’s usually possible with a week of two effort contacting the prisons. I first did this over a decade ago after seeing signs in a touristy area in Bangkok. Check with the prison to see what’s allowed to bring. If you can schedule 2 visits, the prisoners often have simple requests (large size women’s underwear). I also leave small amounts in their accounts ($10 or so ) if they don’t have family supporting (this buys extra food or hygiene goods). I never go with an agenda or questions, just a friendly face and English conversation about whatever they want to talk about. Most every westerner I met was a woman duped by a guy into carrying drugs. One guy I met claimed innocence, had been in a Thai prison a long time, and was clearly borderline crazy. Looking at his eyes was difficult. One person admitted to thinking it was easy money- a one time thing for travel money (turned into a 10 year sentence). I am glad shows like this help raise awareness.
