Edit : Those who say there's nothing new, it turns out GPT-4o is the mysterious GPT2 chatbot, according to the benchmarks it has the same performance jump compared to GPT-4 Turbo as it was for GPT-4 and GPT-4 Turbo, it's not all, it's actually a SOTA multimodal model with all modalities in and out, meaning it can output text, images and audio.
Why are we "cooked?"

Although the demo was very impressive, we could already do all of this with the app. This was a disappointment.

Something that they didn't say but did was that they essentially made gpt 4-turbo free for everyone. Which means the paid version of GPT 5 will be out in a couple of months at best.

No, they specifically said FREE. This is a core modus operandi and key to their business model. The only difference is a larger rate limit for paid subscribers.

Try tapping the top right (3 dots), and you may see gpt-4o at the top as a new option... then it worked 😊
To me, the LLM is not what's impressive here. It's the image generation. It's actually crazy and nobody is talking about it. It generates text nearly perfectly and has amazing consistent character generation, it can even generate 3D models from 2 generated images. I think it may be Sora.

The voice mode seems to be missing on the iPhone app. I was using the feature with '4' but that button on the bottom right has disappeared on '40' update!? Anyone have a fix?

Ok let me preface this by saying wow, very very very impressive, BUT! There seems to be asymmetry in the audio and video polling rates. The inflection point for multimodality will be when you can use it as a sign language interpreter. I’m sure that’s only a few months away.

afaik, there is no way this is completely neural network end to end, transformers just do not have the ability to work on audio. audio requires continous values, and vidio would require way too many different tokens to encode.
I think what they actually did was remove the final layers of video/image to text, and audio to text, and instead trained chatGPT to be able to tokenize/embed the outputs of these networks itself. that way you dont need to go from medium to text to representation. you can just go from medium to representation

It is quite impressive. I would love to see them improve their pronunciation in foreign languages. In German and Norwegian the pronunciation is really bad. I tried doing a test where I wanted it to help me with my Norwegian pronunciation and it was asking me to pronounce in a way that was quite wrong.

The demo was very impressive, but all of this can already be done with the app. This represents very little progress. And with Sam saying there likely won't be a big new model release, just increments, and he may not even call it GPT 5, it's becoming increasingly clear they hit a wall. Nobody has been able to do better than GPT 4. I don't think anybody has figured out how to make a GPT 5 that improves GPT 4 in the way GPT 4 improved GPT 3. The whole world is building AI and we have only gotten small, incremental improvements for the past year and a half.
I mean gpt2 was better than 4 and this is amazing it's a huge upgrade on time and cost. And like they said soon they will bring an update what wil come for paid useres i think that might be gpt 4.5 or 5

If it was true, Sam would not be saying there may be no GPT 5 and they will only release incremental gains. They would just release GPT 5 and blow away the competition. They haven't done that because they are not able to.

@@Greg-xi8yx They released demos of SORA. If they made the same progress in their LLM as they did with video, they would be showing it off and/or talking about it. It makes absolutely no sense to be sitting on some epic new model and not only not bragging about it or showing it off but actually telling the world we may just do incremental releases and may not have a GPT 5. That makes no sense. But it makes perfect sense to act that way if you don't have a GPT 5. I think they maxed out what they can with the existing training data. I fear GPT 5 was a bust, only delivered marginal gains and became GPT 4 Turbo.

Name change. This could be GPT5. Or some internal version they are pretesting. In some way, any release of "GPT5" is already a problem. GPT5 is being called AGI. Even if it's not true, that's a problem. In some ways, that name is already burned. So instead we start to get all these other name variants. It's just how they avoid the key issue of ever releasing AGI, essentially, how to never do that.

People still struggle to comprehend that GPT 4 is far more advanced then they can comprehend and is shackled by over alignment and extremely refined system prompts. Numerous experts excluding those from within OAI have stated that GPT4 itself fits the definition of AGI or at least resembles some form of sentience. The version you experience is warped in bubble wrap. This release doesn’t require a new name schema because it’s still utilizing GPT4 at its core. They are simply broadening is scope. Sydney showed us before that GPT4 had multi model capabilities many months before the public was informed. OAI also has more advanced models completed in the can. Many of which are certainly multi modal. This is just another stepping stone to drip feee the public in preparation of future technology that’s all ready a reality. Preparing the general public and governments for AGI will take multiple years. Especially with a skeptical public that’s very anti AI. This requires a systematic approach to slowly developing conformity. An approach that governments and business have used for decades. It also helps sustain industry secrets. They will only release assets in a timeline that maintains their superiority and protects their business interests. Even true AGI is infinitely more valuable behind closed for now. It will remain so unless other organizations or open source projects threatens this. Dropping 4-0 then 4.5 before 5 and do one with 5 already completed is an extremely common practice in all forms of business. We get s glimpses of capabilities they’ve on wrap for well over a year.
