    Love these video's.
We have an 18 month old Male Mali. In the last 3 months or so we joined a volunteer group and started training him to be a volunteer search and rescue scent trailing dog. He has ZERO lack of motivation to do the job and picked up the game almost immediately. I'm the one that needs the training to be honest. He's not done a live trail yet but the time will come.
There are 10 dogs in the group. 4 of which are Mali's. There are 2 working (security) Mali's in the group and they make my guy look like a maltese. Twice a week we essentially play hide and seek with the dogs. Someone leave's a scent item and runs away and hides and the dog takes scent and off we go to look for the person. When they get to the person the dog sits to indicate that this is their guy and a tug toy comes out and the game starts. It's absolutely incredible watching a working dog do it's thing.
He has a specific trailing harness and when that harness comes out he knows it's go time. The focus is incredible. I was told when we got him that they need a job. The trailing is my dog's talent and that's his job. I'd encourage anyone who has a mali to find that talent and nurture it. These dogs change your life.
Apart from the trailing we try to run 5km 3 times a week with him and we get out every day and try to mix up his walks we try to walk him in a forest or on the mountain. When we're out people inevitably approach coz he's so beautiful. I always tell people he's not friendly. He's not bitten anyone but he does have a guarding thing around my wife and I don't want to scare them.

Alot of people have the problem of humanizing their dog. They don't understand dogs, or their requirements. They give very little to no thought on training or behavior. It's to bad Robert, that more people don't know about the things you speak of or are unwilling to follow thru on your advice. Thank you for your continued insight and love of dogs.

    2. Be ready to wake up early.... Very early, EVERYDAY
    3. Be ready to get fit, like REALLY fit.
    4. Be firm, but fair. ALWAYS

    6. Take He/Her everywhere with you, if you can't, don't get one.
    7. Buckle up for the best relationship you could ever have with any animal. They are so Intune with their master its unbelievable.

@@jeffk464 the mixes are the best in my opinion when done correctly. Not with a show line German Shepherd but it working line. Mals have not been over bred to the degree of the extremely famous German Shepherd has, so they still have incredible health. That said, the head of a German Shepherd, size of a working line German Shepherd, but the slightly more square build and longer legs of the Malinois really make for a gorgeous dog. In terms of temperament, they are both wonderful family dogs and protection dogs, but the German Shepherd lends a little less sensitivity, and a better off switch. As a side note, most of the contracted working canines are not purebreds and they are this mix including sometimes even out crossed to Mastiff for American Pitbull Terrier and then bred back to Shepherd's. But they are not "mutts". They're very selectively bred working dogs. But no show lines.

    • @jeffk464
      @jeffk464 Год назад

@@primalcritters Well if you want a Mastiff mix, I would probably just get an Anatolian Shepherd. Getting an Anatolian would be more of a sure bet than a German Shepherd Mastiff mix. GSD's and Mals are pretty similar breeds, obviously closely related. Its kind of like crossing a aussie with a border collie, they are practically the same dog only the aussie sits in the back of the class room with a dunce cap and the border collie is teachers pet.

I also hired a local K9 Police trainer in Kansas for both dogs, they each spent a month getting training while boarding. These dogs are so well behaved. They have learned what activities on the type of leash/prong/ecollar. It's amazing how much they learn. I easily spend 3 hours with them everyday spread out over morning/mid-day/evening with at least 15 minutes of obedience each every day. I have not had any issues whatsoever. I tell people to get a Velcro-personality high energy field lab first. I couldn't be happier that I switched breeds last minute, a Mal would have been way too much for me rn. EDIT TO ADD that I do actually do a lot of sports, and my lab also does service and volunteer search work, and I have experience with guard and high drive dogs and kill-pen horses. So I don't by any means live a lifestyle or have a background that most would consider incompatible for a Malinois, but I think people underestimate just how much their breed can clash with personalities or living/career scenarios too-- For me personally, if my velcro high energy field lab is a lot for me, I would not do well with herding instincts, more stamina, and guard tendencies added on top of that at this current point in my life.
I decided to make the most out of my lab and work up to other breeds before the Mal and eventually get a Mal later in life. If you are not an extremely self-motivated person with good mobility and certain degrees of GRIT, or are just not able to be that person *right now,* Belgian Shepherds will walk all over you. I used to live with a large pack of working Tervurens and even they are considered more tame in comparison to Mals. I wish the upset people would relax when someone suggests that a Mal may not be for them, we're not saying you could never ever get that dog, maybe it's just not right for you right now or something needs to change first 🤷🏻‍♀️
Plus I'm literally in a situation where I'm happier with the dog I did get instead, so I think people should be more open to that outcome-- this field lab is one of the best dogs I never could have expected or asked for, and I used to think labs were boring. Just because you really like the idea of having one breed, doesn't mean it's the right time and right place. I really want a Caucasian Shepherd or a Kangal one day once I have a farm, but it's not going to be my next service dog LOL. Also, please avoid trainers that blanket recommend these breeds without asking you tons of questions-- You might have gotten away with it but not every Mal, handler, family, kid, etc is so lucky ❤️‍🔥

Agreed. People forget they can find any number of working dog mixes with high drive at your local rescues. Had a border collie/golden mix that was very high drive and he was the best with kids (babysat the neighborhood kids and kept them busy), people, strangers (only disliked 2 in his whole life and that had me wondering about those people) and had a LOT of energy, smart, and loved to go places. He was free from someone who had an oops with the neighborhood dog. He would have been a great agility or some other pastime, however, we lost him to cancer at 5 years old.

Great to hear your respnses on this...
    I've got a 6 month old Mal who's "perfect".
    Yes she's mouthy.
Yes she's dog-barky only when responding to oddball dogs.
She's a combo of (dominantly) Food Drive... with Prey Drive folded in enough to give lengthy ball chases, and a high desire to pull on bite toys.
My little 6 month Mal female wierdo can have an extreme clamp bite, like there's nothing else in the world. Compared to my previous dog, a GSD with an extreme prey drive, this Mal's way very mellow and friendly, but she's a goddess on intesity and bite force when she gets into a "this one's MINE!" mind-frame.
This brings me to my eventual question...
The best way to teach a pup an "out" or "drop" in high drive moments?
(Deflecting with treats is what I've defaulted to.)

hello m8 im researching about belgian malinois to buy one i just love the breed and even tho im living in a apartment i want to make it work by any means. the best and logical youtube page that i've found is yours and modern malinois. i have 2 questions before i buy the right poppy and i would appreciate it if you respawn.
    1. i dont know what kind of personality is best for me with these conditions:
i live in a apartment so i need a more relaxed not noisy dog.
i work from home, my wife too so we will be with him 24/7.
i dont like pointless walking and unfun energy draining with hiking and running, i love to play and train dogs and i have lods of xp with independent dogs such as kangals and sarabi but this will be my first time owning a working line dog.
im generaly lazy to go out and i perfer to put lots of time with him daily in the house but ill make it work to train my dog as best as i can and show him different places and stuff but cant go out everyday.
so what do you think is the best personality, energy and drive level for me?
    2. the local breeder tell me that they dont keep the poppy's more than 2months otherwise they might die to pcv but the trainers tell me that i need to buy a older poppy like 4 or even 5 months old otherwise they might die to pcv and also they dont get aggressive behaviors. so yeah im kinda confused with why they say 2 completely different thing. i dont know who's telling the truth. can you please help me with this issue?

I don't have puppies, I go for 2 to 3-year-olds. I've Just lost my German Shepherd last Wednesday.
I'm picking up a 3-year-old Belgian Malinois x German shepherd next week because the owner is giving him up and their other two because they are moving.
I'm 60-years-old and have always had large dogs that can cover some ground.
My message is for many people "stop watching movies with these kinds of dogs without looking into the time you have to put into them. They will get bored and your house will become worse than a trainwreck"
I will get this dog and it will be with me no matter what he's like and we will be there for each other until one of us dies.
When you get a dog, keep it. If you rehome it, never get another one. I'm sick to death of people rehoming dogs because they are not what they expected. It takes a lot of love, time, cleaning, and patience. They are like children who depend on you forever.

If you have this breed, and you do not like barking. Then you have the wrong dog. Also they can be sensitiv. They are great dogs, but if they are barking, they hear something or they want something. I have two mixes, a male and a female. The male ask for like a German Shepherd. The female out of the same litter acts like the opposite side. She will bark any country. Here is something she wants to go outside. She wants to play. That is her way to communicate to me. If you want that style dog. But you want something that can be more calm and quiet. Then you need a German Shepherd. I grew up with German shepherds they are calmer, and in my opinion usually are trained.
