Lol
Yep, fruits & nuts! 😂
I vacuum sealed nuts (Almonds, walnuts and pecans) in mason jars. 11 years and they were still perfect, No oxygen absorbers used. I did jellied candies the same way... those were good for 7 years and still soft. I also did peanut M&Ms.... 11 years... still perfect! I have the food saver mason jar attachments.
Hello-can this also be done with roasted and salted nuts? Can they be stored as well as plain walnuts and almonds? I like my smoke house almonds and I want to stick up. Thank you in advance!
Thanks for sharing, I have stuff stored the same way in just the last year or two, so it's good to beat fred back on life expectancy of the foods stored.
@@missa6882 yes you can store roasted and salted nuts but any time there is oil involved, the shelf life can be shorter
Ya... as an engineer I can't see any advantage to putting an oxygen absorber in something you are vacuum sealing. It won't hurt anything but if you suck all the air out you are also suck out all the oxygen so there is nothing for them to absorb. Eh... each to their own, keep what works in your area and we will all be better off, remember charity begins at home... aka make sure you don't need help before spending resource on others, you are not helping if you spend $20 helping other but need $30 yourself.
@@jnorth3341 the advantage of putting an oxygen absorber is backup. When or if the seal fails, for 7 cents, you still may have a mason jar full of consumable product. Lets face it, most preppers dont inspect their jars monthly, let alone weekly like they should
It's getting expensive watching you. LOL Everytime you talk about a shortage I have to go shopping to stock up. I also put the word out to other prepping households. Thanks for all that you do.
Lol .. I Know what you mean !! But Great Investments !!
Every time I watch prepper videos, I eat something. Ugh !
@@user-xe9uy5ly3i just grabbed a handful of cashews. 😂
If in a no power situation or if you food saver breaks you can use a manual brake bleeder as a vacuum pump. Just connect the tubing to the lid attachment and squeeze it till its sealed. They are an inexpensive and easy to use back up.
This is what I use as well. That way I don't have to bring out my foodsaver that I store in the garage lol.
Very helpful. Thanks.
I use a brake bleeder as well both my food savers stopped working.
What is a brake bleeder?
There are "better' hand pumps, I have used this one for several years when I don't want to drag out the vacuum sealer machine.
Ordering all the nuts I plan to use for Christmas baking fir the next few years today! ….however I better seal and hide them quick because any nuts never last in this home.
This video makes all of the squirrels envious
Thanks for the info. I have avoided stocking up on nuts. Not anymore. Thank you for testing these things for us.
Same.
The main nuts grown in California are almonds, pistachios and walnuts. If you are going to store nuts, those would be good ones to stockpile.
If you have problem w/ cholesterol, walnuts are a natural help for that. Ten a day. Great food to have on hand.
I vacuum seal nut in bags too and freeze some, but don't add an 02 absorber. We love the no peanuts nuts mix from Sam's, $12. Bought a brand new container before I left for Georgia. There wasn't a nut left when I got home.😵😞 Need to restock and hide the jars or I won't get any.😄 Reminds me of Viktor and your M&Ms. Have a blessed day. 💙
@J T in our climate, do u think that nuts will last in a 78* house in mylar or mason? Or do u always freeze? Frozen ones have taken on freezer smell but I have never vacuum sealed for freezer.
I live in Georgia. Keep house at 78-77. I vacuum seal some in half gallon jars and vacuum seal in bags and put in freezer. I keep original bags in cabinet for around a year with no problem.
@@pinschrunner I vacuum seal and freeze what will fit in the freezer. Sealing keeps out the freezer smell. Also store some in the prep room. That room stays 72 or below. It doesn't have high ceilings, the window is blocked, and I keep the fan on.
@@JT-2012 it is much hotter here inland. No room in our house is 72* during the Spring, Summer or Fall. Maybe wintertime.
@@pinschrunner I think our prep room is cooler because it's on the east side of the house and I inserted Styrofoam sheets into the windows. I also did that in the toilet room in my bathroom and a bedroom window. Both on the west side and got hot in the afternoon. After putting the Styrofoam in the windows I noticed the rooms cooled down a lot.
Thank you for the information. Will do!
Thank you so much for doing this series. I have always wondered but never knew someone to actually try it.
You are such a wonderful teacher and you bless this community with your talent. Thank you.
I was always told that you cannot seal nuts for long term because of the oil content that they would go rancid. I see that you store them for six years so I am definitely going to do the same thing. Thank you so very much for the information and God bless you Rudy!💕💕💕🙏🙏🙏
Just remember @MJYouAreNotAlone1 Rudy is in Alaska. Any warmer climate and the oils simply will not fair as well. Go ahead and try but check frequently/monthly
Always heard that too.
I have kept slivered almonds for years packaged well in the freezer. I also keep pecans and walnuts that way
Thank you everyone!
Thank you, I was told not to freeze nuts, because the oils break down. In deep Southern Tx. For ground cover when the grass dries off I use peanuts in front yard. An oat for summer grass along side yard and back yard. My new neighbors dislike the 14" height, but am exempt from 12" rule because it's in native grass and a grain.
Blessings and be well.
The one down vote is from Mr. Peanut he doesn’t Like you storing peanuts for the future , must eat them now.

Thank you Rudy this is a very important thing to know.
I vacuum seal mine with the food saver as flat as can be and then toss them in the freezer. Have had nuts for years that way.
Hi, Nunna. I do the same.👍😀
@@LC-777 I don't know because I use the nuts for baking and NONE of that is healthy or nutritious. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Excellent and timely information, Thanks!
This was so informative and interesting. I always enjoy your instructional videos, and when you open something up that’s been stored. I’ve wanted a sealer for years. This has me convinced. Thanks AP, and best to your family! 🇺🇸
I have been double sealing my bags ever since someone showed me the technique years ago. A belt and suspenders approach for a little added security.

As a little hint, I double seal the bags as an added insurance since I’ve occasionally had a seal fail. Especially for the freezer.

Spot on timing! I was given 2 large bags of walnuts and wasn't sure how to preserve them Long term.
You are a FANTASTIC teacher! Thank you so much!
Thanks for the dry canning reminder. I haven't done any in a while and am about to get into it again. I have accumulated some packages in food pails from getting home late after work from the store, that I need to dry can.
Good idea. Thanks.
Great video, thanks!
I like how u showed ur self looking at it, smelling it, then tasting it..for new people so they are doing things safely
Good morning Mister Alaska Prepper, liked the video very much. I really like and appreciate you taking the time to show us newbies the proper way of storing different types of foods. You didn't mention it but Georgia is generally the number one producer of Peanuts and Pecans in the U.S. Our weather this year has been pretty decent, but we did have a terrible storms come through South Georgia from hurricane Michael and a virus to last years crop that really has affected prices. Pecan trees were terribly affected by Michael and are still struggling to return. Prices just continue to rise.
This is really good to know. I dry canned a LOT of flour, rice, and beans just to make sure they were bug-free, but I didn't know I could do nuts as well to keep them fresh. I have a little bit put away, but I passed up a decent price on nuts the other day because I don't have freezer space and there's only so long they'll keep before they go stale (or rancid in the case of high-oil nuts like walnuts).
This is great information! Typically I purchase nuts whenever there's a good sale and throw them in the freezer to have for holiday baking. I've notice that sometimes they still tend to get a little rancid. This will not only keep them fresher but save me a good amount of much needed freezer space too!
Thats just what I was looking for, thanks. THUMBS UP THERE AND HERE!
Even if not for long-term food storage, this is a great way to store nuts if you don't go through them very quickly. I'll leave a small portion in a regular package for immediate use, and vacuum seal the rest, that way I don't have to worry about them going stale over time before I get around to using them.
Thanks again for this video. I couldn't find the vacuum attachment for mason jars in town, so I got a set from Amazon, and oxygen absorbers. I also got some big cans of nuts. But, I've been dehydrating onions, peppers, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, some meat, almost everything. The adapter is working perfectly.
Hi there and great video with important info that's really useful! Thank you for sharing and God bless you!

Very helpful video, thank you
Wow. This video came out just in time. I was given a big much of bags of almonds and walnuts. I am going to vaccum seal them. Thanks
I use the vacuum sealer or the oxygen absorbers. I never use both.
HINT: when opening number 10 cans, seal the remainder of product in quart jars to prevent discoloration (and moisture) to impact the food.
Aunt Lizzy, thank you for saying you don't use an oxygen absorber when vacuum sealing. I got confused when AP did it. Do you know if you can vacuum seal raisins? I suspect they could harden but soaking in water should plumb them up. Thanks
@@m.b.g.2235 I wouldn’t vacuum seal raisins. If I were to do anything, I would put them in a glass jar with a silica pack.
@@auntlizzy1308 .. thanks for the information. I do have disscant packs, which I assume are the same thing as silica. I'm trying to find ways to store some baking good items, like raisins, for a time when we can't get any.
For those who are getting a Foodsaver for the first time, you will find it indispensable for prepping. I did rice in smaller quantities, beans and almost anything dry and they still hold theirseal after many years. The beans give off a gas over time (and after consumption), but that doesn’t mean you lost the seal. There is still no oxygen in there. Sharp objects like egg noodles will puncture the bag so they should be double bagged and handled carefully. Be sure to get an extra box or two so you have some after shtf. Lastly, meat sealed in foodsaver bags will not get freezer burn and keep in the freezer for at least a year.
Thanks AP for the demonstration.
I have used vacuumed sealed meat(frozen from my freezer,) up to 5 yrs with no freezer burn and tasted great.
@@sharmynbrass2858 I found a lost venison roast vacuum sealed from 2012 this spring. I cooked it 3/21 in the style of a Mississippi Pot Roast and it was totally fine. Tasted just like a fresh roast. Vacuum packaging is awesome for food storage!
@@w4ame Awesome information!
Last month I made a pot roast from meat which had been stored via a FoodSaver in 2018 and it was as good as when I bought it.
I like to put my pasta in a ziplock baggy first the vacuum and seal, or parchment paper lining the inside of the bag and then vacuum and seal. Allows the noodles not to puncture the bags and works well.
I am learning so much from your channel. Thank you for sharing your knowledge
Thanks AP! Always wondered about the fat in nuts and if they'd save well. Thanks for these tips!!
We have a love of almonds that we bought. I kept thinking there has to be a way to preserve them. Thanks AP. I know what Im doing next week.😄
Nuts added to payday preps! Had no idea they would last this long.
Excellent information
Got same setup but never stored those for long term.
👍🏼🤠👍🏼
Thank you
So many say you can’t do nuts because of the oils. So glad you showed us!
Thanks!
Excellent information! Nuts are definitely on the preps list now. They are so calorie dense. They are a must for good nutrition when SHTF. Good to know we can store them for the long term.
Thank you so much for this video! I know you are a gift from God because I was just gifted a huge amount of nuts all different kinds. I placed them in the freezer! I only have a small deep freezer and with the nuts and the blackberries that I have gotten it is completely full. I don’t think I could find a place for a small frozen ice tray. Now I can get them out of the freezer and bag them up and store them in the pantry with everything else that is my long term storage. I have just started prepping and have been totally amazed at how much the Father in Heaven has provided for me. I have lots of food that I will be learning how to can and preserve.
Thank you so much. I have been putting off doing my almonds and other nuts because I am using the bags and not jars. Living in earthquake country I try to stay away from glass as much as possible. You are the first person I’ve seen using bags and clearing up the yes or no on the oxygen absorbers. Thanks!
Thank you for showing us your method and the results. The last walnuts I got hadn't even reached the best buy date and already had a rancid taste and smell. 🇺🇸👍❤
I use the break bleeder to vacuum seal. Never thought to do nuts. Thank you AP!
How long have you been prepping? You sure have a lot of great ideas! Thanks so much for your help and advice! God bless!

Thank you so much for testing nuts!
Thanks again for the wonderful video. Reminded me that I need to get some extra nuts to stock up.
Thanks AP. very good video. Thanks for all you do. God bless!
That’s fascinating! I have always been told nuts only stay good for a year or two, due to the oils going rancid. Now I know better. Thanks for the great video. 👍🏼
That’s it ,I am buying a vacuume sealer. I can’t believe how simple it is 👍🇬🇧
Oh yes, and way worth the cost! I go shopping like for value packs or family packs of meat then separate portions, food saver the meat without oxygen absorbers, then freeze the meat. I label date, what is in the bag...like 3 boneless chicken breast, costco, and date. I recently started putting weight on my label too. You will not regret your purchase and the amount of food waste is greatly reduced.
@@kellyhamilton460 ... You explained it perfectly. I found a pkg of chicken that I put in just a freezer storage bag. Compared to others I now do with the food saver it was unbelievable. Ice formed in the bag, skin was shriveled. I tossed it.
Be careful and check reviews for vacuum sealers. The last two I bought, the first vacuum pump went out after a few weeks, and the second, after LESS THAN TEN SEALS! The same brand lasted for many YEARS when my grandma and I had them about twenty years ago.
I bought a 150.00 food saver and it was a piece of crap so I returned it. Then I bought one on Amazon for 37.00 and it works fantastic. I could be happier with it!
Foodsaver no longer makes the jar cap sealers BUT you can find them on Ebay, Amazon etc.. Unfortunately, they have tripled, if not quadrupled, in price over the past few years.
Thank you! Just ordered one and the small and large canning jar lid sealers and bags! Pre cut qt. And the rolls!
Great informational video 👍🏼🙏🏽 Thank you for all the work that you do for us! APPRECIATE IT & GREATFUL!! 🙏🏽🤗😎

Great step by step on vacuum sealer. I've been procrastinating. Can you demonstrate a Berkey water filter? Does size matter? Is it about storing more prior to filtering?
I dry ovened walnuts back in March 2021 in pint Mason jars. I opened this week, still tasty, not rancide. I store in a cool dark basement.
I also will put on my label where I bought it from...like Costco or Fred Meyer. That way if there is ever a recall, then I know which bags to grab.
That is a great tip.
@@AlaskaPrepper I started doing that after I had purchased 2 cases of canned black bean...one from costco and one from another store. Costco sent out the recall and I was sitting with both cases wondering which one came from which store. Imagine food savering meat and you bought say chicken from diff stores...how would you know which to return and to what store? Moreover, how could you trust the chicken left in your freezer?
Good idea.
Any time I need an answer for how to store a particular prep....I go to you because I know you have already answered the question! Because of YOU and Mr Tom "bama", who recommended you, I started prepping in January 2020. Now I have 6 x 7 ft pantry and have started clearing off shelves in the basement for more. It's only 3 of us, but I have been cooking for our dogs for nearly 40 years. Because of you I invested in an American canner and learned from you how to can meats for the dogs and us.....not just meat, but bones and cartilage so soft that they just melt and are a good source of bone meal for the dogs. I just skimmed off 4 quarts of chicken broth to can and a pint of beef suet to add to bird seed and will be canning those also.
At first my husband complained, but since he has been enjoying my canned meats and noticed how little time it takes to put a meal on the table, it has changed his mind.
I know what it is to be perpetually hungry on a daily basis....for years....and once I got out of that situation I vowed food would be my first priority over everything else. But it wasn't until, I watched Mr Tom and your channels that I realized how much further I had to go. Thank you! Thank you for all you do to educate your audience. You brought me to another level to keep my family fed. Thank you....
